Neon disposal cost?

Recommended Posts

Had an interesting conversation with a biochemist recently at recycling plant.

Does anybody give me an idea how much it cost to dispose/properly recycle an 18" neon letter?

And how the hell can you remove all that glass from a 5-7 letter sign, throw it in the back of your truck, and not have it break?

Just trying to see on a service call for neon - what % of the service call cost is in "removing and disposing of the neon"

Thats all.

Not against neon - just comparing time and cost versus LED - I believe that neon removal time would be quicker than LED - some of the LED tape sticks pretty good. But you do have to remove neon post rivets - so just comparing differences in time and disposal cost.

And lastly - trying to see if a way could be developed to retrofit a letter where a person could spend less time on a ladder or in a bucket truck - would be much safer.

First off, A good glass bender will not worry about the neon breaking in shipping, delivering and installation. I have delivered many times 1000+ft in the back of my pick up stacked to the hilt and nothing breaks. All as you have to do is lay the glass on a blanket and lay an extension cord or rope over it. it will travel perfectly for small amounts (10 or so letters). I've even taped it to the hood of the truck and did 75mph. People with 2 left hands (or vinyl jockey turned service tech) should not handle glass, LED and DS tape is perfect for them types.

Have you added in the cost of the onsite UL inspection and / or on site fire inspection to the retrofit.

I think the cost of recycleing the letters would be the same as the flourescents in your office or the lamps from service calls. Every municipality handels recycling differntly. you have to contact the one in the area you are concerned about.

PS- neon is 100% recyclable, glass, metal, GAS(back to where it came from) even the Hg. concidering the only place they mine it is in China anymore so most likely it has been recycled already.

Have a great weekend all. Martinis on the beach (striper dirty this weekend)

GOOD things happen for a reason......

Awesome feedback my friend. Funny on the China comment. DOnt you remember playing Light Saber Wars with T8 fluorescents when we were young?

We are having a lot of the porn star variety martinis in town this weekend - city is busy.
