I Love Doing Signs

Recommended Posts

Maybe I'm sick in the head but I love this industry. I just got my permits approved today to do a projected sign and a regular wall sign in the Gaslamp District here in downtown San Diego. The wall sign is simple and 1 foot or so off the ground.

The other is the challenging one. A huge projected sign (Blade) where I need to look at the structual and shop drawings of the building and pretty much drill and punch holes in the wall till I find the structual beams which are approx 2" behind the wall. A little bit of guessing work involved. After finding those beams I'll have to weld up some plates and square tubing to create two heavy duty brackets to hold the sign. I'll have to punch bigger holes above or below the beams to reach around with my hand to put the nuts on the bolts that will hold the bracket to the beams. Each bracket will have 4 holes with 1/2" bolts. After I complete that task I will have to replaster the wall which might look like swiss cheese. Final part will be craning up the large sign next to the brackets and fastening it, last but not least hooking the primary up.

It makes my head spin sometimes but I love this stuff. I like the easy stuff but I like this stuff more at times.

I'll be making a small video short and I'll post the entire job start to finish.

Alright

But if you fall off the ladder I'm going to pour the beer you came out with all over you and drag you into the alley next to the dumpsters and claim I don't know you.

Your not calling my insurance agent :D

Is it for a restaurant? shop? business?

I love the gaslamp.....btw..did you see that Street Scene is at Qualcomm stadium this year?

I just read a story and saw a video about the Grand Havana Cigar and Coffee Lounge in the Gaslamp District of San Diego. Are you guys familiar with this case where apparently the city of San Diego has used eminent domain to grab this guy's business so a political crony can build a Marriott Hotel on his land?

joemomma

I do it in the transformer box.

Your not sick in the head Westcoast Sign Guy. Your just sick in the head.

But I agree with you. There is nothing like what we sign people do for a living. Not only do I sell, make and install signs for a living. I also do this as a hobby as well. That to me is awsome.

It is a great thing to come to a problem and then figure it out no matter how big or small in my opinion. I especially like the problem of being behind the deadline. There is the stress of the scramble to get the job done on time while maintaining quality. And also to see the co-workers that are normally laid back to come to life and join in on the fun of full throtle stress. At the end of the job I get to realize I kept my integrity of personal quality and being. And that I have my guys respect to join in on the fun, listen and to band together. It is a beautiful thing I tell you.

Also, if you think of it we are somewhat god like(dont freak out on me people, I havent gone to my head). We tell people where to go, how to get there, where their at, etc. People would be lost without the sign person. We are directors of daily life.

Allright I'm rambling. T-I-M-E-T-O-G-O-T-O-B-E-D

:iagree:

The only downside is I can't walk down the street and look at every (neon)sign in great detail. It takes forever just to visit the neighbours. My girlfriend is :bitchin: so I can't :hump9: then I might as well :smile096: myself :nonono2:

K, just ate breakfast and had two cups 'o' coffee. I think I can talk now. Nothing like problem solving, makes me enjoy the job more and more. A greater appreciation so to speak. If there wasn't a challenge the job would be boring.

I think the Electric Sign field in the industry has the biggest challenges of all others and the most discipline needed.

I love nothing better than to drive down the freeway at night and see my work glowing and radiating onto the roadway. <-----as poetic as I can get :D

I also Sell, fabricate & install electric signs. Travis, I gather your talking about planning and executing a job start to finish. Maybe the feeling is unexplainable. I'm trying to phase out of electric signs and stick with non-illuminated, but as I do. I notice the appreciation of the finished job is not as great. I mean I know it's a damn good product, but maybe it's just that more time...that's what it is. The more time you spend the more you appreciate what you did. That was obvious wasn't it

I'm glad i'm not a public speaker
