JLG equipment accident, always refer to CSA / OSHA facts

Signworks Inc. just cleared of accident in Jan 2010

We have an accident where a JLG 80ft articulating boom tipped back and took out power wires and almost killed the operator. The results have come in from our insurance engineer and the rental companies engineer. Niether engineer can prove the equipment was safe at the time of the accident. The leveling actuators on this machine model have a history of failing. Our operator has been excused of any fault.

What we have learned through all this is that the manufacturer says to follow the manual when using the lift, fact is the manual is not approved or certified by CSA or OSHA for stability and all other safety requirements. This is the second instance of bullsh*t lifts that are sold and rented to people that we have come across.

Always check your equipment when you purchase from small or large companies, it takes time but you will save a life or two.

They don't certify lifts but they have specifications and standards you have to meet. The labor board and engineers here pull out the CSA 225-m88. Not sure what it is called in USA. The leveling axle gave out on this.

There was an accident involving their equipment in Kansas City last summer or fall. It was equipment failure that tipped the lift over and killed the two steelworkers who had been working on the new performing arts building downtown. I'd take my trusty 1972 Sponco ladder over lots of bigger and better lifts because I know the equipment intimately and know it's safe. There's a lot to be said for simple and mechanically sound equipment.

WOW !!!!!! Thank God your guy was not killed. It looks like the power lines kept it from turning over. I know the big sign erectors around us have the equip checked and certified. Not sure of the frequincy
