As an American would you take this job?

  1. 1. Would you take this job on?

I wouldn't take the job. If I felt like any business (not just a mosque) was was there to do anything to bring harm or cause any kind of pain to my community, I would feel like an accomplice. I live in the community and don't want to have the reputaion as someone who cares only about his own personal interests and not about the community. I feel like that's what the NY Mosque is doing.

Example, a company from out of state wanted to open a XXX video store, in the middle of an area that had only family type restraunts and businesses, in the small town I live in. There was a church within 200 yards or so and many other family businesses and rest. They called me to build a 90 ft pylon sign. I turned down the job.

I understood why they wanted the video store there. It had great Interstate access. I also understood they could care less about the local people and there opinions. They did open the business, but did not get a permit for the highrise. They have offered to pay a premium, in cash, for someone to install the sign anyway. They did get one taker to give it a try on Sunday morning but the police saw them and stopped them.

All the signs in that area have variances. So the ammount of square footage they are allowed without a variance won't serve their needs at the location they picked.

Atleast we live in a country where we can have this discussion.

Agreed.

The difference with the XXX store was the the pylon was not allowed. If I was a sign shop, I would have refused also - but I leave the decisions about what is allowed and what isn't to others. I might steer the customer to make a more subtle or appropriate sign for the location, but it seems the mosque is doing that too - no minarets, domes, etc... It's a mosque in name only, just like the porn store could have a nice stucco exterior with covered windows and subdued signage. But to be there at all - with some signs - is OK.

You'd think the church would want it under their nose so they can keep a look out for their parishioners going in there at 11 pm ;)

No one is questioning their right to put it there! What is being questioned is their motive.

I thought the question was "Would you take the job?".

My point was that if they had the legal right (which you concede they do) - regardless of how suitable, appropriate, right, wrong or completely misguided - I'd take their project just like I have from any other church, synagogue or temple.

I have walked away or refused jobs on principle - but never on religion. Making one here would only prove the zealots right.

Marko, I am pretty sure that if one of your family members had died in the WTC your opinion would be different. Put yourself in the shoes of someone who did lose a loved one for a moment, I think its easy to see what a slap in the face this would be.

My position on this subject has more to do with compassion than religion. There are efforts being made to find a suitable place for the Mosque at a different location. If the muslim leadership is unwilling to relent on their pursuit to build near the WTC site then I think most Americans will feel that there is a hidden agenda

To answer the question " No , I would not take this job "

Marko, I'm glad we agree about the "Mosque in name only" That's what many people think, that's why they don't want it there.

And, my point about the XXX store was the fact that I live in the community and want to help my community, as well as make a living in it, not just suck the life out of it for a few nickles to sit a rub together at night in my lonely castle.

Well said Brian.

So that's the impression of me you've created - that I'll destroy a community to rub a couple of nickels together at night? Talk about hyperbole.

Should I change my avatar to Monty Burns, or is Gene Simmons already strawman enough?

I don't want to turn this political discussion into a personal thing. That was not my intention. It's just how I would feel, about myself, if I had taken the XXX job. For me, it would be letting myself and my community down for money. We're all different. I live in a town of 5000 people. I know everybody and they know me. I'm 52 years old now and I want to drive down the street and feel as though I have some measure of respect in my community. I can remember a time when I was in my late 20's early thirties that I would kiss a lot of ass to get a deal. I don't do that anymore. And, who knows, that ass kising may have gotten me to the point that I don't have to do it anymore.

If you go back and read all my posts on this you'll see that I never said I would condemn anyone who did the job, just that I wouldn't and why.

Marco, maybe you and Gene could work with folks at the mosque to do the souvineers. Just Kidding, ok.

I think this should be my dropping off point since I probably have said all there is to say without repeating myself or pissing somebody off.

Same here. Still good that we can have this conversation at all, without fear of state police or thugs coming over to teach us otherwise.

I am proud to be an American where I was raised with a backbone and taught by my parents to stand up for what I believe in and not back down.

If that is built there I hope someone burns the damn thing to the ground. Thats my opinion and I don't care what anyone else thinks. If they have a right to defame sacred ground by building it there without worrying about stepping on the feelings of the families of those who died, then why should I give a flying F..K about their feelings. That's all for me GOD BLESS AMERICA... and AMERICANS true americans :amerflag:

Amen Brian

If it eventually goes through and gets built it will be built by the unions in the City. Do what the Russians did when many of our buildings were built during the cold war. Put bugs in every single space they can cram listening, viewing, motion sensitive devices and what ever else they have. First sign of anything remove the building and you have a soild case so there will be no church vs state BS.

GOOD things happen for a reason......

Just had to add this - sent to me via email:

I am shocked that so many Americans are against the mosque, near Ground

Zero.

We should allow it, but in order to promote tolerance.......

I propose that a gay nightclub be opened next door to the mosque to promote

tolerance in the

mosque. We could call it "The Turban Cowboy" or "You Mecca Me Hot".

Next door on the other side, could be a butcher shop, that specializes in

pork, and pork

products and makes a nice lunchtime pulled pork sandwich.

Then across the street, a very daring lingerie store, called " Victoria

Keeps Nothing Secret".

Next to Victoria's would be that new topless redneck hoagie shop called

"Beers-Breasts&Buns".

And of course, what area wouldn't be complete without a three girl nudie car

wash called "The Three Mosqueteers"

And, skin headed white supremacists would be renting a store front tattoo

parlor just above the butcher shop, which would of course be just a few feet

down from the Armed Forces Recruiting Office...just a step or two from the

VA administration office

To make the neighborhood and street complete I also propose that we build

the largest Southern Baptist Church in the country with shared parking with

the mosque, which would have to allow use of their parking lot for old

fashion tent revivals.

You know....just to promote that, "tolerance thing"!

Oh yeah, I almost forgot, the Hell's Angels are looking for a new area for a

clubhouse...are you thinking what I'm thinking? Yep, I know the perfect

area.

Hey, just trying to promote that tolerance thing. I'm a good loyal concern

for my fellow man kind of guy...what can I say?

If your tolerance promotin' is similar to mine then by all means pass this

along, especially to all of your democratic friends and of course to all

politicians everywhere.

Signed,

Bubba Ray Smith, TPM (tolerance promotin' manager)

Did I mention that the women from P.E.T.A. would be naked on every street

corner raising awareness about the evils of wearing fur?

Gosh I love this country....wish everybody did.

Great email Hanson, thanks for sharing that.

It may have been a joke, but I completely agree. The fact is that there already are strip clubs and clothing retailers and any number of 'questionable' businesses in the area around Ground Zero, so if there's going to be a muslim community center, there might as well be a pork store and a biker hangout.

I was with you all the way up to the part about the naked P.E.T.A chicks. For some reason I am getting a disturbing vision of Rosie O'donnell standing naked on a street corner. :P Not sure any of us could tolerate that

I would quit my job before I worked for anybody who would take that job, after the bombing in Oklahoma City in 1995 I know first hand what a terrorist attack will do to a community, and those people were Americans. Building this Mosque is not only a slap in the face to the U.S. it is a slap in the face to the citizens of NYC. A militia may have a legal right to build a headquarters in downtown OKC but our city leaders would never let that happen. If American contractors are hired they should be boycotted.
