I just got my new NY State Workers Compensation Rates. This is mandatory in NYS.

Sign Hangers and Service related employees are now $ 29.00 on the hundred. Thats a 52% increase in one shot. At $ 50,000 its an extra $ 14,500. $ 100,000 is $ 29,000.Per salery. What a great place to work, I have not had a single claim in 25 years. Add this to all the other insurances and requirements. Hows the rest of the states doing

isn't new york state wonderful - due to this increase we have had to increase our service and installation rates by 10.00 an hour each. the only thing we have going is we are in a really good safety group with a 25% discount and a great dividend every year. How about you? In a safety group?

Yes we are in a safety group and receive all discounts. Look at the groups policy prices, mine gets 10% of the WC policy for their policy. They give a return, but we are never ahead. We are paying the price for everyone who has no insurance.

Paul, This is a joke. Last month I got a 49% increase and immediately complained and wanted to know why. The state insurance fund reasoning was JUST BECAUSE, everyone is going to pay more. In 11 years of business I have never had a claim. I don't know if it is this way all across the country but the increase in cost to due business is getting out of control. Taxes, Insurance, Osha, Ul, EPA, DOT. Over the last year we have been forced to lay off two part time guys and one of my four service/install guys. Don't take me wrong, business is booming but it is struggle to continue to turn a profit and grow when everyone is in your pocket. I guess we can all thank our politicians for this economic trend. Anyone who thinks we live in a democratic state is sadly mistaken, we live in a socialist state that thinks redistribution of wealth will fix everything. Well they are wrong. All they are doing is forcing us to charge more.

When I had employees years back I think I was paying $25 or $27 per $100 of payroll. In some ways In certain times my employees brought more money home than I did (Shop lease, vehicles, Gas, utilities, ins, workers comp, UL, etc, etc).

Then Governor Arnold ran for office on lowering workers comp because to many business's were leaving, not sure if he ever lowered it I gave up employees before he came to ofice. Workers comp is just one example of the ridiculous entities one has to pay in order to do business.

A business license here in san diego is $136 if you're a contractor, basic wall sign permit is about $250 and 1.5 hours on average for wait time and procesing. I just recently did a job up in Manhattan Beach, hour and a half away. $248 for a business license, $372.50 for a permit, 2 week waiting time for approval time for wit and travel back.

If I have to file for San Diego County I'm looking at $375 for permits, processing and walking through 7 separate/different counters, all with a one to 2 week wait on approval time. One day to drop off with a few counters wait time 3 hours. Pick up day 4 desks and wait time 3-4 hours. All these desks that I have to pass though like "rain and gutters" (which have nothing to do with signs), pre planning, planning, pre building, building, electrical, even the cashier has her own desk where i have to wait to be called and she hands me environmental impact papers to sign, like should a swallow install thier nest right where Im supposed to be installing a sign I have a number to call the fish and wild life dept so I can file more paperwork and get more approvals and procedures. Someone at the city of san diego can do with one person and have me out by 1hour, so can other smaller san diego counties. Talk about "GIVING" these city workers a job, we can easy eliminate 80% of the useless jobs and actually put city money to better use like in schools and roads. Anyone seen America's Finest cities roads?

The costs of paying me to wait and go back with San Diego county to my client. This does not even count for design review if there is one.

I'd rather spend a whole day at the DMV

Where is the incentive to do/conduct business? Or want to? Open a place of business or restaurant?

I went way of the workers comp road, my apologies. I did hear taxes and regulation in NY is getting out of hand.

that is definitely outrageous. I'vw spent most of my life in NY and had a building business in the 80's and 90's with a 19% worker's comp rate with no claims. I've now lived in Florida for five years and we pay 8.09% wc for our sign company. Huge difference. I don't know how you can survive at those rates. Good luck.

We had out first claim in 15 years - it was a doozie. We got canceled and thrown into the state pool....$27K/year more that the $5K we were paying... Our only alternative is to sub out installs now.... Guy who caused the problem (and was negligent) is now with a competitor, guy injured a year ago will never work again (mostly thanks to money grubbing derelict docs who see a WC claim as a pot of gold) and we, how did nothing wrong, are screwed. Things are bad enough her in the greater Detroit area...this is a killer after 30+ years of hard work building a successful and respected company. Kinda takes the fun out of it!

I left new york years ago and never looked back.

most of my friends living in new york and family, they have mostly gotten rid of employees, to much of a beak breaker. one good friend had a window and roofing co. and he finally got fed up.

he closed his doors got rid of the help and just went out doing roofing only and doing it by himself

and he tells me he makes twice what he did with employees.

Paul, I to got that that notice. I have my October statement from 2009 and the October statement from 2010 and the increase is 400%. The total premium is 4 times what is was in 2009. They are really screwing us.

WA state is no better - our workers comp is supposed to go up 45%, and we already pay thru the nose for our service/install crew. However, there is a ballot measure on the Nov election to allow companies to pick an insurance co for their workers comp, instead of going thru the state. The State has been running ads about how AIG will come in and screw us all, but the business people here know who's been doin' the screwin'! This state is so anti business it amazes me.

Erik, we know how you feel - we have to get permits in a bizillion different cities here, and everyone is different. Some are easier to work with, some are a pain in the keester. We had to hire a person just to do permits, and charge our customers accordingly at $78 per hour for permit labor.

If you work in the Big Apple yo got to pay for a Big Apple!!!

We use a private insurer and our rate is currently $7.50 per $100. The Arizona State Compensation Fund gives a dividend back to vendors with good records.

I won't get political here but with national and local elections coming up in November think carefully about the candidates you vote for. Small business owners...make a big noise!
