Do cow farts and Florescent lamps start fires?

I has been said in a post on here that farmers in New Zealand are retro fitting light fixtures with LEDs because cow farts will ignite the sparks when changing florescent lamps! Really?

If so just turn the switch off when you change the lamp. We are a big farming community here with lots of cows and I wonder if the farmers know what kind of danger they are in! :lol_hitting:

It sounds like BS to me, but if it were true they should be using explosion proof fixtures, LED's or not.

It has to be true if it happened in New Z doesn't it? LOL!

He,he

How much constant combustable volume of methane does it take to fill a barn that is ventilated because of the smell to strike an arc.

GOOD things happen for a reason......

In New Z their cows are much more potent than our sorry American cows. Everything is bigger/better in New Z didn't you know :lol_hitting:

Maybe the NZ farmers could saddle their cows with gas tanks like this guy did :P

I'm sure that was invented in New Z by M LOL!

One of the companies I used to work with supplies lighting to agriculture. It's mostly pork and poultry, but I do recall a conversation where the lighting had to be chemically resistant to methane gases when used around cows. T5HO lamps are pretty popular in farming, and lately they're using pretty savvy control systems to alter the animal's Circadian clocks to either counter the effects of less sunlight during winter, or to increase the pace at which animals grow or produce. 20 hour days, for example.

I think all of us have seem those little sparks or arcs when changing a fluorescent lamp, sometimes just from rubbing the tips of the lamp on other metal (never mind the electricity itself). If high school kids can light their farts, maybe it's possible that if a barn isn't well ventilated, that a buildup of methane could actually ignite.

Wasn't this in a Mythbusters episode?

I'm sure that in new Z the cows sit in especially made chairs and the lamps are changed right by their ass! hahahah

I think a spark from the pins on a lamp and an open flame right by the source (ass) is two very different things. I forgot though New Z is so far ahead of everyone else in the world, we just have not gotten there yet.

I think if the methane level was that high the heaters would explode way before a lamp change.

Thank you all for your colorful comments.

I am sure you all know who Fonterra is... Bryan, they are the largest Dairy company in the world.. you like to learn more, read up http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fonterra

Funny that you posted this - your timing is just perfect. We had a rather extensive meeting on this the other day with the world's largest dairy producer and there is another issue that was causing fires...heat build up.

So we did a comparison study and our new LED tubes that they have specified to use are reducing the surface temperature of the ceiling by 30 degrees celsius over the electronic ballast T8 system they were using before.

We also did a video on this and I will post it here in a few days. The performance of our system was better than fluorescent and required no rewiring at all. The product is therefore in compliance with Safety Standards around the world because you would not modify the UL listed fixture at all - you would just change the bulb.

And I can be a little more colorful and entertaining if you would like....we are having a party in Las Vegas, and we have introduced a product that looks like a pole....now come on, use your imagination!!! hahaha.

Fire is the primary reason why Fonterra is moving away from fluorescent to LED. And while it makes a lot of sense to "turn the lights out" - kind of hard to do in factories that are running production 24 hours a day.

And...for the record...just because you dont believe it, doesnt mean it isnt happening.

After all - I think they all that Christopher Columbus was crazy when he said that the world was not flat.

No I don't know who fonterra is (or care)but since they are from New Z they surly have to be the biggest in the world LOL! My name is spelled Brian by the way. I ask you to PROVE the temp reduction of 30 degrees over T8 by a study done by someone other than you. You sir are no Christopher Columbus. Remember your initial claim was about fires from changing lamps not heat. That is what we are all laughing at!

Fonterra is the company behind a large portion of milk products used in the USA - including milk chocolate etc. But you know it doesnt make any sense to try and tell you anything. You love to start arguments - join the Tea Party.

For those in California - the "California Cows" are actually New Zealand cows and the commercials are filmed in New Zealand... Got Milk....

I met with a man in Australia whose daughter is the world leading researcher on reducing methane levels in cows - my original comment about cow farts was wrong. It is cow burps that are causing 85% of the methane. I mentioned the fire issues to him and he was well aware of them.

Yes, explosion proof fixtures are used - they are made of Polycarbonate - which as all the educated people on this website know - does not do very well with exposure to UV. Since fluorescent is outputting UV it is making the fixtures fragile and they are cracking and breaking. Broken or open fixtures are what cause problems. Please note that explosion proof fixtures are also full enclosed and not much heat is going out.

So now I ask all brilliant sign people in Indiana - what happens when you have high heat and high UV in polycarbonate?

And Brian - Columbus I am not but...I was written about in a book titled "Brilliant" - read it sometime - I start movements and trends. Here is info on the book

have a great weekend Brian... not sure you are coming to Las Vegas to see the new lights...are you, we might miss you!

Yeah, the info is good but Manuel seems to dismiss the DOE caliper report findings as nothing more than propoganda. Seems ironic he should feel this way as the "movements and trends" this "brilliant" salesman champions are the very same type of propoganda.

Can't wait to here the next world problem these amazing LED's are going to solve :laughing1:

I Caliper was and is so great - why did the US Government tell the DOE that now Energy Star will handle this...so essentially Caliper will probably die....can you answer this?

GE is in the White House now...these use someone else's LEDs....amazing how the shift has already started.

Most "educated" people I know will use metallic explosion proof fixtures if the plastic ones will not hold up. I'm sure people in Indiana don't think much of you either.

Come to Indiana some time and share your views of us.

Your 'Brilliance' is only eclipsed by your Modesty

I am going to Vegas but will stay away from you. A few hours in a room with you telling everyone how great, rich and brilliant you are is not my idea of a good time.

Where in New Z are they building the golden shrine to you (God of all things illuminated) and your ego? You are the self proclaimed King of New Z aren't you?

Here is an idea if it is that hot in there maybe instead of buying Sloan or GE leds they should buy some hamburger buns for the pre cooked cows and have a party!!!!

Brian we really took this thread the wrong way. I apologize.

I am the first person to say LEDs are not for everything - in fact I often tell customers to use neon or t5 fluorescent

I find it amusing when a new technology comes on the scene how many ODD applications comes as a result. For example little blue Viagra pill was actually a high blood pressure pill that Pfizer was doing a clinical trial on - they found other things it "helped" by accident. I know this first hand because I car pooled with the husband of the Pfizer rep who discovered this.

So when someone tells me they use our lights for an application that is ODD - I like to share. I knew nothing about dairy processing - now I do. What I failed to say is that the company was evaluating rewiring all of their facilities to t5 fluorescent. We came up with a way they could have less power consumed, have the same light, and it would cost less because they did not have to re-wire. So we listened and solved their problem. They had started on the path of changing lights due to repeated fires.

So I apologize for being rude. That was inappropriate

And Brian I am an American and proud of it. I am moving back to the USA. And while New Zealand is great in someways it is not perfect for everything- just like LED lighting

So let's stop this bickering

And FYI - in regards to Indiana - my father went to Notre Dame and about 20 years ago I use to go to Ft Wayne to visit Magnavox military - made electronics for the Navy.

So please accept my apologies.

And your comment about "rich" - boy am I far from that financially but I am sure getting a richer understanding of the world by living different places. Spain or Panama next!
