Accucut Translucent Vinyl Problems

Recommended Posts

Has anybody else had problems like this with translucent vinyl? The below photo was taken yesterday and the signs were installed 3 years ago. We have had numerous similar problems with Accucut Trnaslucent Vinyl supplied by Trim USA. We never had this problem when we used Avery but when our customer changed their spec we had to change vinyls and went to Accucut as that was our main vendor. We have since changed to 3M shortly after we saw these problems in the field.

Never heard of that vinyl brand, always used 3M when possible and or Orocal as a back up depending on colors and translucency. Thanks for the heads up

I have seen Calendered Vinyl do this, very rarely Cast if it has been applied correctly. ( Not saying you did anything wrong ) The Website does not state on this page if it is Cast or not - http://www.trimusa.com/accucut_05.html - it mentions Cast a few pages earlier. Send the pics to the Trim folks, they may want lot/batch/roll info or any other paperwork you may have if you want to persue this as a claim. If it is defective the best you will get ( in my experience only ) is credit or replacement. Calendered Vinyls want to shrink to a greater degree than Cast. Sometimes it can be tough to figure out how pressure sensitives are made from the Factory, all sorts of marketing is used. Ultra Calendered, Super Calendered, it may be just a warranty period without a description.

Hi Dennis - thanks for all of that. They tried to blame us for the application although we used the exact same wet application on the Avery vinyl and have yet to have one occurrence of the type of shrinking and cracking that you see in the photo. We were told by Trim that their translucent vinyl is Cast. We did get them to take back all of the vinyl we had in house and replace with 3M (this color only). However my cost to replace these faces is WAY more than the value of the vinyl....

That is the challenge with material warranties - very seldom (if ever these days) will a Distributor or Factory pay for Labor. As you mentioned the replacement of the vinyl is just a small part of the overall job. Judging by the pictures the material does seem defective, very unusual for cast to do this. My guess is the Trim Accucut is a private label brand, not likely we will find out who the Factory is.

You are correct...it is a private label. Oh...you should also know that they blamed the chemistry of the acrylic we use - Optex LD...

I am curious as to what they are saying specifically the Optix LD chemistry - Plaskolite would also be interested. The Optix LD is sold with Vinyl being one of the recommended ways to decorate the sheet - http://www.plaskolite.com/Fabrication/Acrylic/Decorating if there is something 'wrong' with the formula Plaskolite would like to know so they can fix it. Not sure the folks at Trim are going down the right path here.
