I'm flattered really........well....NO I'm not!

WTF?!?!

Maybe you sign guys might want to browse these sites and make sure they're also not posting your signs on their site and giving the perception to possible customers that THEY did your hard work. Not only perception, but they might have profited from it, been picked because/based on this pic being in their portfolio

I just happened to run into a sign company from Linked In who had a pic of a sign I did and posted here on the SS years back

http://www.thesignsyndicate.com/forums/index.php?/topic/2236-reverse-led-channel-letter-project/

I researched further out of curiosity, WTF, more used my sign for their portfolio

There are more than I have time to post. What should I do, CC all of them in one email blast? This can take a good couple hours out of my work day.

LOL , Busted !

I would have to think that a little exposure on the Syndicate's "hall of shame" would put a stop to it.

So far I've heard everything from "how did that get there?...." to, "I'll need to contact my IT guy and ask why that's up there", to "maybe that was one of the pics our vendors gave us that they said was okay to use....I'll get it down"

Wow, really? No one seems to know what's on their website these days. I mean, these companies are SO big that the phone and inquiry needs to be passed on to "others".

Anyway, my rant for the day!

I don't think you can do anything about it, from a past experience that I know of a sign shop owner had a long time employee that took a lot of photos with his own camera on jobs that he had sold while employed as a sales person by the sign owner at said sign shop. This was consider by the sign shop owner his digital content he owned, the employee shared the images with his employer to use on the sign shop owners website. When it was time to part ways between the employee and the sign shop owner for what ever reason the employee departed with his digital portfolio. He thence for used these images on a new website as he ventured to open his own sign shop. Of course the first sign shop owner his former employer cried foul and pouted and made ugly faces, then decided litigation was his best option. So he contacted his local attorney at law and had them draft up a nice letter asking for the former employee to cease and desist said images from being displayed on the employees new website. But this got no response from the former employee, as he had a local attorney at law too, so the sign shop owner said lets sue em them and that's exactly what they did sue that dang former employee fer stealing his dang digital intellectual content !! Well the employee counter sued of course cause he had a law man on his side. Well when they went to court the employer was pretty much shut down by the Judge as he didn't have a leg to stand on. Reason being that the images were basically of signs on buildings as he neither owned the buildings or the signs he had no legal claim to them. Also in addition to add insult to injury none of his content on his website was neither copy righted and or he did not have any exclusivity agreement with any of the building owners. When the employee's counter suit was heard they awarded him $30,000.00 for legal fee's and $50,000.00 for harassment the former employer had to pay out. Of course your results may very. Please keep in mind I was neither present and any hearing, but did speak with one of the parties at length about this matter.

Internet Trolls the Unemployed, or Internet Gangster Need Not Respond to this Posting

Now that's Funny!!!

So far these are all signs I sold, fabricated and installed. If these were gallery sites of leisure or for fun, or a industry related blog I wouldn't have a problem with it. My problem is that these are in someones portfolio and it's misleading, it's lying to possible customers telling them this is "their" work "they" produce, the kind of signs THEY do. Not only that, it's my camera shots, not ones they went by and took themselves where they might be able to say "these are examples of signs". It would be the same as stealing artwork, or photography to sell artwork or photography.

I can see the your scenario as being a problem for a shop between the person who sold/designed a job vs. a sign shop property. Maybe they forgot to pass out a non-competitive disclosure agreement. Their bad, haha.

Yes I agreed with your train of thought till the I heard the results of the ruling, you may of built them poured your heart in soul into them but you no longer own them (signs) or you may have never had images copy righted (photos). I feel your pain though I own another business, and I heard I'm really big in Western Australia as a good portion of my content was lets say borrowed without my permission.

Erik;

I know the first company that you have listed on your FBI post relating to "Stolen or Missing" signs............

The contractor, Power, is actually a subcontractor for Coast Sign out of Anaheim, California and it appears that some of the other signs may been those that were produced by Coast but simply installed by Power. They also do work for ICON, so maybe some of the photos could be for them as well. Inasmuch as I am familiar with the Petroleum Industry, I would venture to say that those signs depicted are most probably fabricated by other national builders and again, simply installed by Power.

As far as your sign, well, I don't have any speculation about that. Seems your picture was just pirated and that is the end of the story. I went on their website and noticed that your sign was missing.

Now I am not saying that Power produces no signs, I just can't say that. But some of the major corporate signs, well I'll bet my hard earned dollars that they were produced by others. Having said that, this company does do a good job of installation. Just should be more specific about who built what and who installed what when posting information in cyberspace. If they were specific about which were built and installed in house as opposed to built by others, I think that would be more honorable. But I noticed on their site that they don't actually say that built these signs so I suppose they danced around the edges.

As far as your beautiful sign, well, Bullshit and nothing more. Sad! But Erik, the old addage goes, "Imitation is purest form of flattery".

Talked to most. So far only one person admitted to taking an image that was not their. "Sorry, is that your image?...It's a Beautiful Sign...I'll remove it tonight when I get back".

The rest, well...it's that rotten IT guy, or partner!

I've found some images, not mine to be in multiple websites some even, in some very voice'ee people's portfolio on LinkedIn. Hmmmm

The funny thing about their images on their website are ALL taken their directly from the sign users websites and not from sign companies (except mine). They really went out of the way for my sign because they also took a second image directly from the restaurants website (not shot by me). They do produce signs because I've been to their shop in the past, wonder why they don't post what they've produced.

It may be true that once a sign is up it is no longer your property and you have no control over who photographs it or uses it for watever purpose.

But if someone puts a picture up and claims to be the one who made it, installed or designed it, and they did not, and, they are profiting from it, that is a different offense and they could be liable for damages.

It's worth repeating in situations like this.............. "Stolen Valor".

Apparently the courts have said that you can lie about being a decorated veteran so why not a small offense like stealing a sign photo and claiming it to be your own?

I would think the owner of the sign (customer). Probably has a right to say if someone can use their image. Our website is supplied by Signsearch. It has a few random photos placed in it by signsearch. One day, I'll get off my lazy ass and have them incorporate our signs.

It really sucks that your right about the stolen valor and how it has been co-opted by shameless posers, but there is a difference in making a general statement like "I was in the Army and fought in Vietnam and I won a purple heart". That just makes you a liar. But try saying "I'm John McCain and I spent 3 years in a Prison camp and I am raising funds for Veterans please click here to donate.

To use a sign example Try saying on your website "Here are some examples of our work" and then you show a picture of the WYNN Hotel and casino signage in Las Vegas. You open your self up to liablity, Don't you agree?

I know, extreme example but just keeping the conversation going till my lunch date shows up.

In my thirty years I've seen lots of stuff from.....

People trying to obtain employement with their portfolio...showing my signs in it. Love that one.

Other sign Companies passing my work off as theirs in their advertising and websites.

Sign Companies who use "Crane Manufacturers Inventory trucks" as their fleet of equipment.

My favorites are the ones who show truck lettering. Outer state phone numbers and addresses. The best ones are all the Eurpoean Trucks that are not available in the USA all lettered up. I guess those shops travel to do on site lettering.

There is not much that that suprises me from the web anymore.
