Race & Gender of The Sign Industry

Here's a topic been discussed before in the past.

I just came across this article and something stuck out in it.

http://host.madison.com/wsj/business/executive-qa/executive-q-a-signs-point-to-change-for-mary-beth/article_e5dbd60d-2717-5ed1-b884-192462a548d9.html

Q. As a female owner of a business in a male-dominated industry, has your gender been a disadvantage?

A. When I started in sales in this industry in 1977, I was truly “odd” on a construction site. As such, I drew attention. Women were rarely on a construction site back then. Today, and as the owner, my gender has not been a disadvantage. Though women on construction sites and in leadership positions is more commonplace, we are all here because of our capabilities and qualifications, not our gender.

With the exception of being certified as a woman-owned business, I don’t look at myself as a woman business owner. I look at myself as a business owner.

Then why register yourself as a "Women Owned Business"??? I myself I suppose if I wanted too, I could label myself a "Minority owned business". But why???

In my opinion it's creating soft bigotry, especially for yourself. Why would you want to put yourself out there and let others feel sorry for you automatically?? You are saying, "well, i'm not good enough so I'm going to claim a status that says I am, based on no merit.....but entitlement" It may not be the intention, but you're doing that to yourself. You're letting others label you. You're letting others think you can't do it on your own, that you can't produce a quality product and be successful.

Either business owners are downgrading themselves, or their putting themselves in from of the line of other who maybe more qualified.

It's like Affirmative action, a college may have a limited number of students who maybe allowed to attend and here comes a bunch of under qualified kids who claim a minority status who may have gotten their by floating "C's in High School and the Caucasian kids who got A's are scooted to the side after all their hard work. The best of the best got their opportunity despite their hard work, robbed away from them. This happens in the city and state work place too,it's called a "quota".

It's my opinion that if you're not qualified, then you shouldn't be able to scoot those that ARE, aside for special bid treatment. You should be able to make it on merit and hard work. It's also my opinion that when you claim such a status, you're downgrading yourself when you are qualified. You create a victimization of yourself, and everyone will view you as handicapped, and perceive you as "disadvantaged". I think you rob yourself by letting others label you giving into soft bigotry, and you rob the system of opportunity for all by doing so.

My weekend thought

You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life. - Winston Churchill

I think a person should be free to say: "being in the position I am in, and having been there for 36 years, is radical; but the decisions I make on a daily basis are very normal, and no more radical than those made daily by everyone else in the country who has my job. Still, I'm proud of it."

If there happens to be a certification that sums that up, then all the better.

While I am against Government preferences,

I couldn't blame someone for trying to use every advantage at there disposal. We all do for the most part.

If I know someone in a position to help me get business or get new contacts; that what we all do.

In the long run it boils down to your skills and abilities.

I have found that it is easier to get business than it is to keep it. So these "leg up" programs probably do help someone get business, but people that thrive and grow have to perform just like everybody else to keep it.

The only exception is Government, where bad performance can go on and on because it not based on results. I say that with the utmost of disdain.
