A Race - Fluorescent vs Sloan LED SignBox II

So I came across this over the weekend on Sloan LED's Sign Box II and thought I'd post here for anyone interested to kick it around on their spare time. I didn't even have to do much on this one myself but one thing I did see on the Fluorescent side of things is a lot of fumbling around for something that is pretty simple with the simplest kind of knockdown raceway that anyone can just about pick up from their local hardware stores these days. I thought I would finish, or tell the rest of the story not mentioned, and that's what our expected cost would be using one over the other to save in time and what our customer will expect to pay for it.

Let's break this down on cost, and cost of operation and take a look at what we just saw and how it relates to our cost, what we will have to sell it for, and what the consumer will have to pay for. Let's just call this a 6' x 5' double sided cabinet.

MATERIALS SHOP COST

LIGHT SOURCES (30')

5) 6' Fluorescent T12 800ma Lamps - $6.04 each x 5 = $30.20

5) 6' Fluorescent T8 800ma Lamps - $22.00 each x 5 = $110.00 (Long Life Lamps)

Now for the question to all of you. How much would you sell that 6'x5' (30sq') double sided cabinet for with simple faces (White with black lettering) as a Fluorescent and as a Sloan LED's SignBox II System fabrication & installation?

What will your profit margin be?

As a sign shop are we making money paying for and using a higher cost system? In the amount of time it takes to fabricate a complete sign cabinet are we loosing out on money keeping it conventional which has the lower cost and more proprietary (custom)?

Now slightly away from this subject an in another subject to think about.

What's to keep our trade to becoming as a commodity where the consumer can just go to HomeDepot and put their own LED system in where they just peel and stick?

Now a day even schools have wide format printers, so vinyl and printing aren't really apart of the sign trade anymore. The only thing that's left IMO is sign painting, conventional back-lighting and Neon.

When it comes to a mom & pop store sign just about anyone now a day can keep up a sheet of plex, anyone can print film, and just about anyone can pick up LEDs from a lighting store. What will keep our industry as a trade and be turned into a commodity which is the direction being pushed by those outside of our trade ? Large sign programs? Are we killing our own trade by not building unique and proprietary signs that does save money for us and the consumer?

just some thoughts I'd throw out there since so many light source manufacturers are trying to dictate to the sign shop labor and cost and what they should be charging for retrofits like Ventex markets

Are we soon to be just the middleman, the means for manufacturers to sell their products

In 5 years the lamps will still be lit. Wonder how the LED's will be performing?

I had a national come to me with this product. They wanted me to retro fit a bunch of monument/pole signs. They had allotted about the same time to install the Sloan product. Left out, all the retro fit time.. I passed...

They wanted to use you to be the middleman, charge a short time cheap labor cost and probably no fuel charge, trip time etc, etc, while they charge the consumer an arm and a leg to save 50% savings in energy probably sold as 80% and didn't bother to mention that it would take 16+ years to make it back, or 40 years depending on how much it was sold for.

What you guys are failing to disclose, is that the guy on the right, who looks curiously like the guy on the left, had a Magical Apron on which allowed him to gain superhuman powers. It was this apron that made the difference.

I would like to see a fair comparison with both fellas wearing the Magical Apron while assembling..............

I was going to blow off watching the video since I have seen such things before....Glad I didn't. Just 1 comment....How many times did the fluorescent guy put the bottom right side raceway cover on and off? I didn't count but bet it was over 10 times. If I saw one of my shop guys having that much trouble fitting a simple .040 cover he would be "re-trained" as the state of CT calls it, then canned. I saw a lot of wasted movement there. Whoops what am I thinking this was a Sloan video. How many times will the LED's be replaced over the RIO period? Oh yes that pushed ROI even further out to like NEVER.

I must also add this last tidbit because I don't want anyone to misinterpret what I'm saying. I'm not coming to any conclusion that Fluorescent is THE best choice overall, there are many instances where it's better to pay more for an LED system for a cabinet rather than a fluorescent system, example high rise building or an area that makes it very difficult or expensive to service.

But on the everyday level of applications, the public as well as sign shops have very awkward skewed conclusion that an LED system is a better choice based on time, or of the opinion that LEDs have a short ROI and that the user is saving 80%, or being told they are.

If you're not using high powered LEDs and the sign is in a heavy populated area of other signs, chances are the LED cabinets are going to have a very hard time competing for visibility because their not as bright. Too many times do I see consumers being told their saving on energy because their new sign is only 1.2 watts a foot vs the old 4 watts a foot only to find out that once the was opened the sign company actually had to double or triple the amount of product to give it the same visible light that it once was or to compete with the surroundings. So now their ROI is NOT what they were sold on, what was once supposed to be 1.2 watts a foot is now 3.2 watts per foot. I think I've posted pictures of this instance in the past, the clients were not happy after they just paid for 6+ locations.

there are many instances where it's better to pay more for an LED system for a cabinet rather than a fluorescent system, example high rise building or an area that makes it very difficult or expensive to service.

Voltarc's 60K "max" florescents are definitely a strong competitor to LED's in a situation like that:

F96T8 HO - 7467 lumens, 101 lumes/watt, 60k hours, Lumen maint: 80% @ 60K - $23/lamp

      So, we finally did it.  It's been kicked around for months, prototypes, after prototypes and locked in on a configuration that we finally liked.
       
      As most of you know the Sign Syndicate we've been testing majority of the main stream LED's since 2008 in a unbiased benchmark comparison, tests such as "The Great White Hope....Project Tighty Whitey...Red Light District...Border Security & Blue Light Special".  Over that time we've seen some characteristics that we liked, made sense, understood what will last and won't.  What it means to be a High-End LED product.
       
      We have sold the NC LED's & Axioms for a few years now, as some of our favorites from the testing (Axioms no longer).  But it's been time to do our own, make it more custom and more perfect for the Sign Industry.  The Brighton line is made from those in the Sign Industry.....FOR the Sign Industry.
       
      It's BrightON, pronounced just like the city. 
       
      So what so unique about the Brighton?  For starters, we wanted it to be VERY efficient.  I don't know of another more bright and efficient LED module in it's class.  155 lum/W and 124lum with a 170˙ Batwing optic lens, most importantly when it comes the sign industry the important number is 63.09 Foot Candles on a sign face per Watt
       
      The important aspects of long lasting LEDs is of course finding the "sweet spot", where it's driven just perfect for light and power.  The Brighton is VERY under driven, less power, MORE light!  These can be spaced out pretty far due to the optics lens, it's brighter in angles than it is straight on, or up.  Under driving  improves thermal performance, which extends life all while getting higher Lumens per watt.  The Brighton LED is a High-End, High Performance LED module for High-End applications.
       
      For starters off the bat we will have a 2 Diode, (no need for a 3 Diode), 4 Diode, and our Sign Cabinet model 6 Diode (SunFire).  Shops won't need to stock multiple module types, the Brighton-2 is so versatile, you can use it for almost anything, just adjust the spacing.  It already comes with 7" inches of wire so jumping from one row to another is easy.  Space the center to center at 6" for good light, 5" center for Better Light, 4" for Best Light.  They're 1.7 mods/foot and work good for shallow 2" applications depending on face type to of course much deeper.
       
      Since these are driven so low, they don't generate a whole lot of heat, BUT, our Brighton-6 (2.8w) is Heatsinked on all Aluminum PCB for longer life.
       
      One of the biggest complaints we have received about LEDs when it comes to large projects like large letters or cabinets is......"We have to use so MANY Power Supplies!"
       
      A nice aspect about the Brighton is, it's a whole 24v system!  Everything!
       
      As sign companies we are redistricted by the Class II regulation of no larger than 5A per channel.  So 12v is restricted to 60watts, BUT....24v is restricted to 96watts.  24v will mean more modules per power supply.  You're now getting almost double the amount of modules for a project.
       
      24V cuts that amperage that runs across the wiring and module in half!  It reduces the resistance, reduces the heat and most importantly IMPROVES reliability.
       
      I think we can all agree that LESS is BETTER, less moving parts, the less you have to worry. 
       
      This is the first part of our Brighton Line, we'll continue to improve it widening the line and of course always always staying far ahead of the curve
       
       
      I'm including some rough test pics of our process and how they fair.  We should have these available in the first part of Fall.
       
      And yes, we will still stock, and continue to sell NC LED Reckless LED

      Had a customer send this to us by email, maybe they'll chime in a tell us more but...
      It's simple, they're replacing cheap plastic LED power supplies made in CHINA with better quality, better thermal cooling LED Power Supplies...OUR Union Korean Made LED Power Supplies.
      Our 60 watt (displayed above) is IP68, Recognized by UL as Class II (SAM) and for Wet Location.  These are versatile, you can use in a box or sign structure, or use externally.  Most importantly you can breath easy when your UL Inspector surprises you with a visit and sees these units, including our 120watt version which is one of the few approved and listed in the SAM
      The cheap plastic Chinese LED Power Supplies by Principal LED & others are great for areas that have good cooling like external fans or for your kids school science projects but not in closed areas where ventilation is not great.  The "cheapies" are attractive for the price at $12 or less, but not great for consumers who have to pay the service bill of a crane and labor to replace because as professionals we know these only last for short periods of time.

    • Like new Roland VersaCamm VS640 printer for sale - prints white & metallic inks - it needs a print head, but other than that, it is in immaculate condition.  You can't even tell we have printed on it I have kept it so clean.  I think it is about 7 or 8 years old.  We are getting a new printer, so I have to get this one out of the way before we can set the new printer up.  Will come with all of the RIP Software (Roland VersaWorks)  - Excuse the dirty floor!  Had a large project going on in here so I haven't had time to clean!  LOL             Make me an offer.
    • Most Light Source Suppliers and Manufacturers won't show you examples let alone "numbers" of light readings on Sign Cabinet or Sign Projects from light source components they push like these I'm posting here, but....This is The Sign Syndicate!   "Seeing is believing" as they say.   So, one of the components I've been big on because of feedback and demand is a strong enough LED module that doesn't cost an arm and a leg, isn't proprietary where you need to buy their special clips, brackets, etc, and actually put out enough light without exaggerated "Usable Light" under too far spread spacing that's supposed to save you money that won't compete with other existing signs in the area of your project.    Biggest complaint from sign shops about cabinet LEDs....."I don't want to use a whole bunch of power supplies!"   You want your clients sign to stand out, NOT be lost or drown out by other neighboring signs also competing for attention and visibility.   Most importantly, the BrightON Sunfire LED keeps it simple by allowing custom sign shops not having to pay enormous amounts of money.   I've discussed our upcoming new High-End Sign Syndicate BrightON Sunfire LED for Cabinets, Slim Cabinets, and Large Channel Letters before.  But I've never had an opportunity to back it up with facts by illustration until now.   Let's start with our industry long time standard light source components first.    That is good ol HO T12 Fluorescent Lamps.    Unlike our industry suppliers and manufacturers I'm not going to bash the use of HO Lamps, they work good, and they do last a long time despite their marketing claims of failure just to sell another light source.  There are some very well High-End made HO Lamps for our industry.   Back to the project.   Here we have your typical 4' x 4' x 12" double sided cabinet that we would either see on a pole or mounted on the ground.    3/16" 7328 Plexiglas MC acrylic face.  Using industry standard spacing of lamps at 12" spacing.        HO Lamps 6" in from the sides and 12" from lamp to lamp powered by a energy efficient electronic ballast pulling about 126 Watts         With four HO 4' lamps with 12" spacing we have a average Foot Candle average right on the sign face of 156.5 FC    This is, and has been our industry average for sign surface lighting for DECADES.         Here is our High-End Sign Syndicate BrightON Sunfire  (pronounced just like the city)     A 3 watt LED module with a 170˙ High Uniformity Optics with over 420 lm   Most importantly it's 24V system, and Constant Current.... NOT Constant Voltage.    This system has reduced amperage, heat, and resistance running across it compared to a 12V and it has more voltage head room for long runs.  This calculates to longer life.  On a 24V system this means loading more modules on a 96W power supply than a limited 60w power supply of a 12V system.  Less moving parts on a project the better.     Below and as illustrated we spaced our modules the same as HO Fluorescent Lamps.  6" in, 12" from row to row and one Sunfire Module per foot, spaced 12" apart from one another   One thing I wanted on our Sunfire modules were longer wires between each module.  You have enough wire (15") to jump from row to row without having to splice...less labor involved and it gives you more room to do what other tasks you may need to do with longer wiring.   Using modules like our BrightON Sunfire makes your projects at so much of a lesser cost.  Instead of buying special proprietary clips, tracks and mounting brackets just purchase inexpensive alum 1/16" or 1/8" angles and channel for mounting.  These typically can be bought in 8', 16', and 24' lengths.        The results.....196.5 Foot Candle average on the sign face surface, a 26% brighter face       What makes the BrightON Sunfire even better?   Adding a True Power France Lighting Solution 24V LED Power Supply.  True Power means having the ability to load 100% of a load on a power supply.  As you know most power supplies are asked to load to 80%-85%.  Not so with France, 100% if need be.       Most competing cabinet 12V/24V LED modules will run you anywhere from $7.00 to $15.00 per module.    The BrightON Sunfire will only run you $3.75 per module, giving you NOT "Usable Light" but "Real Competitive Light" as illustrated here.....26% brighter, over above our industry standard lighting of T12 HO Fluorescent Lamps!!
