Sign Companies Expect Boom in Business of Gender-Neutral Bathroom Signs

"

Strangers who are trans are no more dangerous than any other stranger, and it turns strangers are a lot less dangerous than we tend to think they are. Especially if you're talking about sexual assault of children. From a 1997 summary of the DoJ stats: "For nearly 90% of the youngest victims of rape, those younger than 12, the offender was someone known to them." (page 20)

I think the signs should just say "BATHROOM." Or perhaps "URINALS" vs "TOILETS."

But this whole kerfluffle isn't about bathrooms, or protecting our children, or where LGBTQ individuals relieve themselves. It's about holding onto power by mobilizing people with fear, anger, and resentment.

I think the transition is going to take a little time and work, but we're going to look back and say "what the hell was the big deal, anyway?" In the long run, we'll end up with more efficient bathrooms that have more privacy all around. Designing public spaces to be universally accessible generally makes them better for everyone -- sidewalk ramps, anyone?

But this whole kerfluffle isn't about bathrooms, or protecting our children, or where LGBTQ individuals relieve themselves. It's about holding onto power by mobilizing people with fear, anger, and resentment.

You sound like an adherent to the School of Weak Argument that so many on the left subscribe to these days.

If you can't logically prove your points or win an argument, turn to the following tried and true accusations:

- If you don't want a grown man with male genitalia in the bathroom with your female loved ones and children.....then by golly you must be homophobic and hate gays.

- If you are against illegal immigration.....well then you're a racist.

- If you're against abortion, well then you just hate women and don't care about their health.

And if all of the above arguments fail......just compare the person you're arguing with to Hitler.

Its why no one can have intelligent conversations about these topics anymore.......they always throw the homophobic or race card out there to silence opposition.

I don't know you; I have no idea if you're homophobic or hate gays. That isn't the point. The point is that making laws limiting which bathroom a person can use based on their genitalia has a tangible negative effect on trans and queer people, who are already an astonishingly marginalized group. The prevalence of suicide attempts among transgender people is almost 10x that of the general population. We have the chance to make a very minor concession -- to rethink how we assign gender exclusivity to public spaces -- that will improve the lives of some of your fellow Americans.

One cool thing about public bathrooms is that there is usually a communal area, with sinks and mirrors and a baby-changing station, and then a bunch of private stalls. I don't especially want anybody in the same bathroom stall with me. I prefer not to have anybody in the stalls next to me, even. But in my experience, people are just about as clothed and composed in the communal area as they are in the hallway outside. Furthermore, if the communal area were unisex, you could escort your children and female loved ones to their private stalls personally.

In smaller establishments, like mom-n-pop restaurants and gas stations, where you're confronted with a choice of two private rooms, one with a toilet in it, and another with a urinal and a toilet, who the hell cares what sign is on the door, or what shape your genitals are? Do your business, don't make a mess, and get on with life.

Matt,

The government wants a lot, and they always have a their version of a "pretty good reason".

ADA in itself is another ridiculous matter which like all things started out good the like all regulation goes too far , and you can throw in Title 22, 24 all into that. Try to open up a business, build a home, even modify a home here in California and see what you have to pay. If you thought it was hard to find a job here in California because we can all look to the fact that we have the stupidest voters in the country, look at our politicians especially our idiot governor nick named "Moon Beam", that should tell you all you need to know.

America has to be at an all time low, and a big laughingstock of the world right now with all we try to do under the name "Political Correctness". This branches out in so many areas to list but this topic being one or part, and in the end it costs us the citizen, user, business owner, consumer.

ADA signs are great, and their a public service but they don't need to be mandated or forced, business can do that on their own without their hands being forced, if they choose too or not and not have to worry about penalty or being sued by ADA slip/fall lawyers. Just like if they chooses to use more water or use more energy they should do so because they are paying for it it and should not be penalized.

On the transgender sign things.... and if government is going to start forcing the hands of schools and business's, that's just fuckin ridiculous and stupid and politicians who play to that tune should be voted out.

We've survived the last hundred years without the need for a third bathroom or sign I'm sure we can go another without, and again.....I...will never fabricate or install one. My choice

Oh but wait, I might get sued because I'm insensitive or a bigot or it could be a hate crime should someone asked me to make/install one and I refuse. I'm sure some would be satisfied with that too

George in the big picture I can agree with you one one thing. We have the freedom of speech in this country, so we also have it on this forum. I am having vision problems. I have one friend that is totally blind, and another one that is partially blind. If you have problems later in life with vision you will see how important is is to have ADA signs and regulations. Our population is rapidly aging. More and more baby boomers are going into senior citizenship. As for the restroom topic, it is so very controversial not only in the sign industry but with the general public. I choose not to get to much into the fray. In my culture, the nail that sticks up gets pounded down. I will no longer participate in this thread. Too much acrimony here.

Sayonara.. and I wish you peace and happiness.

As I see it .....

This isn't about the bigotry and acceptance of others. Most people I've come across are compasionate and understanding.

It's about the government mandates (Laws, with penalties) instigated by socialist agendas

What's next?

A law requiring men to put the seat back down?

I understand and support ADA signage and accomodations for the disabled such as wheelchair access, parking and etc.

What I don't like is the regulations and penalties for failure to adhere to it.

I have installed signs for small businesses trying to get open only to be stopped because their bathroom didn't have enough room or have the right railing next to the toilet. Some of these small businesses are just barely making it financially only to be penalized over technicalities.

I think it should be up to the owner if he will spend the money to accomodate the handicap. Some owners I've talked to say they have never had a patron who required the ADA mandates. I'm sure they would love to have the added business if it was there and provided the return on investment.

I can't help noticing that in the 'member profile' area of this website, there is a place for 'gender', but there are only two choices. I wonder if that description should be expanded into several more check boxes - or maybe instead of gender, how about 'Identifies with' (write in sexual identity here).

Isn't it odd that some of the girls want to go to the men's room and some of the men want to go to the girl's room and the Government wants this to be okay with everybody - BUT, if you get caught peeing out behind a bush somewhere, you will be arrested and charged with all kinds of perversions, and probably get yourself on the sex offender list?

As I see it, we aren't going to solve the issue on this venue. But we can express our opinions.

The fact that we can can have those differing opinions and the right to express them is exactly why we celebrate this Memorial Day weekend. It's not just about vacationing or a barbeque, its about our honoring those who gave us the right to have the kind of open discussion we are having on this venue. Never forget that!

I for one am grateful for and honor those who lie in repose on that picture Erik so appropriately posted on the Sign Syndicate. They gave the ultimate sacrifice for all of us, no matter our belief.

Have a wonderful weekend one and all and be thankful that you are an American who has the freedoms that are afforded us.

Peace out............

Cheers to that. Hope you all have an awesome safe Memorial weekend.

On the pic...

That's Fort Rosecrans, in my opinion the most beautiful piece of real estate that salutes our fallen and vets. When you visit you will smell the salt sea spray air along with hearing the crashing waves from the ocean. What a better view in the pic to reflect the ever changing ocean and water recreational activities made possible by those buried....who fought and sought to preserve and protect this great country and those recreational liberties. A lot of those boats are retired sailors/military of various branches.

Also visible is in the lower right is North Island Navy Base, pride of the Navy Seals.

I'll have to take a pic the next time I go out on my jest ski to wave jump in front of the Point Loma Light House, but it's a majestic view as you travel out of San Diego Bay. North Island to the left, Fort Rosecrans to the right along with the historical Light House

I'll attach the pic here as well
