  1. In some industries and geographical locations hard work does not keep you in business. After 75 years and 3 generations we finally had to close our doors. In Michigan, where there is almost no job market, anybody who has a computer thinks that they are a sign company. We've had 10 pop up in the last year doing business out of their garages and basements. They order vinyl from e-bay and don't care about quality. Unfortunately businesses around here are ONLY looking at the bottom line and not at how long the sign will last. Our only choices were to keep feeding money into the business that we didn't have, lower our quality to compete, or close our doors. Our name is associated with quality signs and we felt it was better to leave with our good name intact rather than lower our quality. It's been very heartbreaking. We wish you all well for 2010 and will be keeping our eye on these forums.
  2. Hi there. I don't get on these pages often enough but when I do I always learn something new. Our sign company is in St. Joseph, Michigan (across Lake Michigan from Chicago). We service neon signs in the area and used to have a couple of benders in the area that we could take tubes to for repairs or replacement. One was a private individual and another was a local company. About 2 years ago they both became unreliable to say the least, non-existent and out of business now. We're turning away work because we can't find a reliable bender. We prefer to stay local and support the small guy. We've asked the local suppliers if they know of anybody buying neon tube in the area but they don't know of anybody right now. Any suggestions or can anybody recommend someone to help us out? Thanks to all
  3. Hi there. From my experience you definitely get what you pay for. We have a 10 year old Roland and it's my workhorse. Try your local sign supplier - there's a good possibility somebody may have turned in an older model for a newer digital print model. Usually there's nothing wrong with them except somebody wanted to upgrade to digital printing. Software ... I use FlexiSign Pro. I hear Corel is good too but haven't used it much. For what it's worth ... if you have a steady hand, patience, and good layout skills a Stabilo, ruler, and an Exacto knife will cut vinyl letters just fine. We have an older sign painter working for us who cuts a lot of things by hand although I'm working on his computer skills. In exchange he's teaching me hand skills. Life's funny isn't it?
