  1. "Police say weather was not a factor in the accident, as it was raining."

    I call Bull Shit.

This was a senseless death that could have and should have been avoided.

No sign company should ever send their employees out to a job site if it's raining. If there is even a possibility of rain in the forecast I will call the customer and simply explain that we don't work in the rain, period. I've never had a customer complain about that. Not even when it set back a deadline install that absolutely has to be up on the wall TODAY! Rain changes everything. I've driven hundreds of miles to a job site, many times, only to get there and cancel the job due to rain. Even a slight drizzle is grounds for packing up the tools and heading back to the shop. I've lost hundreds of dollars in gas and employee wages, many times, due to rain cancellations. And I would gladly lose hundreds more rather than risk injury to myself, my wife, or an employee.

    Rain = Reschedule.

My condolences to the sign guy's family and friends.

  2. Washington State has Labor & Industries - our version of workers comp. Our premiums are about 25K for 12 employees. I do believe safety programs work, but L&I is way over the top. Two examples:

They made an ergonomics law a few years ago that had such stringent requirements for things like repetitive movements that the cost to implement the law would have been more than most small companies could afford. L&I hired lots of extra staff to enforce it (they like surprise visits). Then the law was repealed. L&I still has lots of extra staff - no layoffs there!

Last year they made a "heat stress" rule, that says if it's over 75degrees, you have to provide x amount of water per employee. No problem, all our outside guys have their own 2 gallon thermojugs. If it's over 80 degrees, employees can take a break when ever they like for as long as they like, until they feel cooler, or a mandatory 15 minutes out of each hour. The employer also has to provide them with a shady place with a fan (or air conditioning) to cool off. None of the studies that I've seen justify L&I spending the $ to hire / implement all these new rules, but no one will stop them.

    *** sigh ***

That's ridiculous. Our policy: Work 'em till they drop and then tell the other guys to drag them off the job site. Of course, "they" is me. And the "other guys" is my wife. But she doesn't have any problem what-so-ever dragging my carcass out of the bucket and finishing up the install.

Seriously, we carry workers comp. But we don't have to pay anything close to what Donco pays.

  3. Katie is down and out for the count this morning. It may be a couple days of recuperation before she gets back to work. That was the longest ride she had ever attempted. She's a trooper.

Just so ya'all know - she and I had a great time getting to meet everybody. And it was more about that (getting to meet the syndicates) than anything else.

We're looking forward to doing it again soon!

  4. Recently...

We have lost too many jobs (mainly, exclusively, ship-ins for national accounts) over our 50% deposit requirement. On all business with out of state sign companies we have always required a 50% deposit. Especially if it's a company that we haven't had a long relationship with. And especially on large jobs.

Local companies that we trust and have never had a problem getting paid from - unless it's a large job - we just go do the job and pick up a check when the job is done. Never a problem. Likewise, our local companies have never bitched about giving us a 50% deposit on the larger jobs.

So my question is this: What the hell is the deal with these larger sign companies telling us that they don't do 50% deposits? ("Never have, never will")

On the other hand... I can go with no deposit and terms of 30 - 45 days... If, and only if, they can go with me nearly doubling our rate. If I gotta hang my ass out there on your job and wait to get paid - it's gonna cost ya. Or you can find someone else to install your sign. That our policy.

    What say all of you?

  5. Hey, a voice out of the past --------- you've been gone a while !! Hope things are well out there--summer is coming.

    gn

Luckily, we are already booked for the entire summer - doing cafeteria graphics for 190 schools in Texas. (Gotta love those interior air-conditioned jobs.) Which is not to say we are doing well. Over the last month we have had a drastic slow down in work. And it seems like everyday I hear of layoffs and shut downs. Weird times.

  6. Sorry Erik, I didn't register either, but had every entention of attending. In the back of my mind I could see the wife and I just jumping in the car and driving over to SD for the meet and then driving right back. (That's how the last two shows were for us, Vegas and San Diego, and even the Indian Motorcycle Ralley in Branson. Road Trip, no sleep, just get there, meet everyone, soak up as much information as possible and get back to our dogs before they chew up the house.)

Wish I could go, but I gave up trying to have vacation time.

Now the best I can do is head out to the desert if there's so much as one hour left of daylight ridng time. (Not that I won't strap on a 12 volt Ryobi flashlight to my handlebars and ride at night - sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do.)

This was me about a minute before I stopped to call and wish Mom a Happy Mothers Day.

  8. Check your spam folder, your mail program may have or be putting it in there. Last one sent was April 30th, but this last one was in HTML format, so some programs instantly put them in as spam.

All members here get sent one weekly, unless you no longer use your email address you signed up with

Well, that explaines it. I never look at that email addreess and there's probably 25,000 spam messages in the bulk folder. Once in a great while I go there click delete and move on to the next thing.

Can you manually change my email for receiving news letters on your end? If so, just use my current email.

  9. I don't know how I ended up at this thread, but there it was on my screen, and it about gave me a heart attack!!! I thought I had missed Mother's Day!!!

It's not even May yet!!! :crazy_pilot:

  10. Is this machine still available?? give me a call @937-465-0595 or email jerryv@puresportsdesigns.com

    thanks

Yes, it's still available. I'll give you a call later this morning.

Geraldi, could you post your contacts name and number at computerized cutters? That way anybody looking to buy this thing will have a good contact to help them make an informed decision, and help getting up and running to it's full potential if they do buy it.

Also, you are correct - this machine doesn't do the bending. But it does dimple where the bends need to be and which direction the bends need to go (i.e., inside corner, outside corner).

I would estimate that it can crank out enough returns in less than an hour that an employee would need a couple days to do the same work.

I followed the obvious path and fell down into a rabbit hole...

Goggled the "a division of Megapull Inc." on the front page and got linked to a different kind of sign world. If you fallow that link it's going to bring up a large .pdf file of the 2006 Digital Signage Directory. Wherein there are probably a thousand or so companies listed, with live links to all thier websites and such. Interesting stuff, and the links led me to some interesting websites.

Aside from that I didn't find out anything about "Fiberlite".

After a little more searching (actually using the search feature, duh...) I found this small ad/listing under "Displays and Monitors".

  12. There is no way I'm cancelling my ISA membership. Money is tight and we just became members about 2 weeks ago. If I go to Katie now and tell her "Honey, we need to cancel our ISA membership." Two things are gonna happen:

    1. I'm gonna get my ass kicked by a girl.
    2. Did I mention I'm gonna get my ass kicked by a girl!

  13. Here it is -----http://www.pegasus00.com/kingneon.htm

James Gucwa is his name. Considered photo-realistic paintings. Scroll thru some of these, notice the glass tubing, the breaks, the missing pieces ----------stunning paintings of neon signs.

    WoW! Those are amazing!!!

  14. ***Note*** Nationwide Electrical Invoice

    resolved.jpg

Do you think this thread helped to resolve the invoice? Do you think an invitation to join the thread and explain thier side of the story would be appropriate, of any use. By that I mean - as of right now we only see that there was a problem of some kind. And even though the issue is resolved, there was still an issue to begin with.

What was the issue to begin with? Is delayed payment just SOP for this company? Would you recommend working for them in the future? Would you do more work for them? Would they send more work your way?

That link I posted to the similar thread on Signweb seemed to have a semi-positive outcome for the company in question - to some degree, anyway. (I think mainly because the owner of that company saw that a thread like this could be very damaging to him in the long run, and he changed his ways.) Regardless of the situation, this isn't Hollywood where all press is good press even if it's bad press. Tell me that you have done work for a company and you have had problems collecting on the invoice... That company name goes into my warning list on my desktop. Such is the case with this company here, till I learn otherwise.

  15. Here ya'all go.

    The hours read 00174.0.

The model# and Seial# are in the pic.

The table to the left of the machine holds the coil stock and feeds it into the machine. And then there is the tray stand to the right which catches the returns as they come out of the machine.

There is also the original computer (no software) which has its own little matching cabinet. Sorry no pic of that, but it is included.

  16. I'll drop by the shop today and get all the numbers off the Channel Master.

One of the draw backs my guy was going to have was the fact that he doesn't have a cnc router table. So the letter backs and faces would still be getting cut by hand, allowing for human error, which would cause problems with the computer cut returns.

Whoever gets this thing really needs to have the ability to keep everything cut by computer, so the backs, faces and returns all line up correctly.

I'll post the info this afternoon.

WCSG, I'm not getting this thing I'm only helping my fabricator guy get it out of his shop. I wish I could get it, and a ShopBot!!! Unfortunatley, all I have is the engraver still.

  17. Here's an image I got off the internet. I have some pics of the actual Channel Master up for sale, somewhere on my computer. Just can't find them.

    accu_formNew.jpg

Here's the deal. My local fabrication guy bought this thing almost a year ago and never got the software to run it. I have the software to run it but I'm not giving up my software dongle. I know the thing runs because I made a few files for him to try out and they worked. He doesn't want the thing taking up his shop space anymore.

He paid 5k for it and will let it go for the same.

The software I have is Sign Lab / Engrave Lab. You would need to buy your own copy, which is upwards of $2,500 if I remember correctly. Could be more, could be less. I bought a plotter at the same time. I suppose there are other programs that will work as well.

And of course you would have to pay for shipping. The thing weighs a ton. If bought locally I could deliver for a couple hundred bucks. Also I suppose I could take my laptop and dongle down there for a demonstration if you wanted to see it in action before buying.
