  2. Woman who designed "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign dies LAS VEGAS (AP) — The woman who came up with a neon sign that has welcomed countless visitors to "fabulous Las Vegas" since 1959 has died. Betty Willis, credited with designing the "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign, died in her Overton, Nevada, home on Sunday, according to an obituary on the Virgin Valley & Moapa Valley Mortuaries' website. The 91-year-old artist's often-copied sign sits in a median in the middle of Las Vegas Boulevard south of the Strip. "It's the most recognizable icon in the world," said Danielle Kelly, executive director of The Neon Museum in Las Vegas, where the signs of Sin City's past are retired and on display. The welcome sign's design, which doesn't have a copyright owner, has become a fixture on travel tchotchkes from Vegas and everywhere else, Kelly said. She has a T-shirt from San Francisco with that city's name swapped in for Las Vegas in front of the sign's recognizable shape, she said. "The fact that everyone loves that sign and its design after all these years is a testament to Betty's talents," Clark County Commissioner Steve Sisolak said. "There is probably no bigger Las Vegas icon than that sign." In 2009, the sign was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Kelly called Willis' designs dazzling and said her personality was akin to a strong, fast-talking female lead in movies like "His Girl Friday." "A little salty, a little irreverent," Kelly said with fondness. "I thought she was a classic broad." Willis, born in 1923 in the small town of Overton northeast of Las Vegas, worked as a commercial artist in Los Angeles before returning to Las Vegas, where she worked for sign companies and designed the famous diamond-shaped beacon of flashing lights. The sign has become such a popular photo backdrop that a parking lot for cars and tour buses in the middle of the street was expanded in 2012. Willis also designed neon signs for the Moulin Rouge casino and Blue Angel motel in Las Vegas.
  3. The Sign Syndicate "Meet & Greet" 2015 - ISA Expo - 2012 Orlando Meet & Greet http://www.thesignsyndicate.com/forums/index.php?/topic/5294-sign-syndicate-meet-isa-expo-2012/ - 2013 Las Vegas Meet & Greet http://www.thesignsyndicate.com/forums/index.php?/topic/6055-the-sign-syndicate-meet-greet-2013-isa-expo/ Alright, well this is the official Sign Syndicate 2015 Meet & Greet Thread. ALL ARE WELCOME CENTRA BAR - Luxor Hotel APRIL 10 Friday, 2015 6:00 PM - 8:00PM Same place as our 2013 Meet & Greet, for those who showed up. The Vegas Meet is never as large as Orlando I don't expect a large crowd and that's because well.....there's just too much to do in Vegas! BUT, we'll have our annual meet at the Centra Bar Located right in the middle of the Luxor Hotel casino floor. Look for us, Kirstie & I will be there with beverage in hand, we'll be the group with bright LED "blinkies" attached to our shirts, necks, or fingers. Come on by and introduce yourself, and of course have a beverage! After the Meet we'll go and get into trouble somewhere, just not sure where.....but it'll happen!!! Please chime in if you plan on stopping by so I have an idea about how many blinkies to bring with me or you can always email us admin@thesignsyndicate.com or call us 858-880-1400 Centra Bar Map, so you can find it/us! What it looks like the last time we were there, things change!
  4. New York-New York sign headed for Neon Boneyard https://www.reviewjournal.com/news/new-york-new-york-sign-headed-neon-boneyard By HOWARD STUTZ LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL Workers on Tuesday removed signage from the New York-New York that had greeted visitors to the Strip casino since the property opened in 1997. But the 30-foot gold-border neon reader board, marquee and canopy won’t disappear forever. The signage was taken down in three sections and will be reassembled at the Neon Museum in downtown Las Vegas to become part of the Neon Boneyard. At 14 years old, the sign might be the youngest item at the attraction. “It’s a beautiful sign,” said New York-New York President Cynthia Kiser Murphey of the company’s first donation to the museum. “We’re excited it’s part of the Boneyard.” The removal by workers from Young Electric Sign Co. was in conjunction with development of MGM Resorts International’s $100 million retail, dining and entertainment district. The project is under construction between New York-New York and the Monte Carlo. The outdoor promenade will eventually lead into the company’s planned $350 million sports and entertainment arena that will be built behind the two resorts. Construction will take place on an all-new exterior facade at the southeast corner of New York-New York. Murphey said nine different access points into New York-New York are being created as part of the outdoor district, which is creating a “pedestrian environment.” The area where the sign was located near the casino’s Brooklyn Bridge and Strip entrance is being transformed to create outdoor patio seating for the Nine Fine Irishmen pub and the Hershey’s Chocolate World, an anchor attraction within the district that will occupy 13,000 square feet inside New York-New York. Hersey’s Chocolate World will feature an 18-foot-tall replica of a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup and other over-sized candy brands. In December, New York-New York added three new shops — I Love NYNY, Swatch and Stupidiotic —as well as a Starbucks location. Other new shops are expected to open in the spring. Hershey’s Chocolate World is a central feature in MGM Resort’s plans for the 63-acre outdoor plaza and arena area. The attraction is expected to open in the spring. Other attractions include Shake Shack, a New York-based “roadside” hamburger and hot dog stand developed by Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group. It will open its first location west of Mississippi River at the gateway to the outdoor park. The park itself will have dining pavilions and performance spaces. The Monte Carlo’s European facade will be replaced with Double Barrel, a roadhouse-style bar and restaurant being developed by SBE Entertainment, and a Sambalatte Coffee House. Diablo’s Cantina will remain in its current location.
  5. This is the official thread for this years Sign Syndicate.com's Meet & Greet. ALL ARE WELCOME CENTRA BAR - Luxor Hotel April 5, 2013 6:00 - Till ??? We'll keep this thread updated but it looks like we're going to to have this years meet held publicly at the Centra Bar in the Luxor Friday Night. If we do go ahead with the pvt party, it will be in a reserved part of a night club named privately and by invite only, so chime in here or message us at admin@thesignsyndicate.com and let us know your name and how many. Need to call us before or while at vegas? (619) 871-4001 DON'T FORGET......look for the crowd wearing the "blinkies". The Centra Bar then is nice and open right on the middle of the casino floor so it should be easy to find us. At Orlando I heard it was hard to find us because the front desk person changed the new person did not know our party was on the patio and some people turned around thinking it was not happening. But, it wasn't hard to spot us with a bunch of people walking around with LED blinking bling. Hope to see the usual people and a bunch of new people. Time goes so fast so I hope I meet and get a chance to talk to everyone.
