electronic transformers in larger signs

Are the electronic transformers that are built for use inside channel letters, (like the Ventex models), really good enough to be considered as alternatives to magnetic transformers in those signs? I repair signs in the field which means that I replace transformers, and it would be easy for me to install a new SST in place of a burned out magnetic because of the electronic's smaller size, lighter weight, and lesser expense. But do SSTs last as long or work as reliably as magnetics?

Broad question you wrote -------- especially the "I replace transformers" part. Ventex is good product for its designed purpose --- of operating a channel letter where the electronic power supply is mounted INSIDE the channel letter. It is NOT a replacement for core and coil that are mounted in transformer boxes where the gto runs thru conduit to the letters................

Cabinet neon signs with peanut housings and raceway mounted channel letter signs that use short runs of exposed gto only and no long runs or grounded conduit would seem to be good candidates for using ssts rather than magnetic transformers, especially when it comes to repair since access to sign components can be hard. Will an sst perform as well as a magnetic in this type of sign?

You will have a slightly brighter sign using the sst that is for sure, and more evenly illuminated. I started using them more often in my signs for the last couple of years and so far to date no returns on any. Been using the Ventex and France and have heard good stories on the Tecnolux. If you use them in raceways with the peanut housings make sure you virtual wire them.

We've been using them in the GWH project for just over a year running 24/7 which is equal to about 2.4 sign years. None have failed yet

Now see I don't think the electronic ones are near as bright especially in cold weather

Brian - let me remind you of geography ---- Eric is in Calif where they have naked ladies, and no snow. You live where they have fully clothed women and lots of snow !!

And I agree ---- and I think most experts in electronic power supplies would agree that cold weather doesn't help them at all ---------- look at fluorescent tubes that are lit up with electronic in the winter................

Tom,

Allanson offers a line of channel letter transformers that are designed specifically for environments found in typical CL installations. Our products are constructed of an extruded aluminum case with all components potted finished with end caps that are applied with gaskets. The “packed in metal” design makes them very tolerant to dampness as well as very strong shielding from RF.

The most important things you need to know when using electronic neon transformers are the placement, clearance and proximity to separate systems within a single (larger) letter.

• When there are more than one system (neon and transformer) in a single letter there needs to be no less than 1/2” inch of clearance between any surfaces of the glass from the adjacent system. The reason for this is cross talk where the RF from one system can effect the operation of another in the same letter.

• The second is the secondary wiring from the transformer to the electrodes; we recommend that the wire be supported by a tube support no less than 6” from the transformer. Whenever possible it is recommended that the factory leads from transformer remain as equal in length as possible. Do not add long GTO jumps from units to unit if at all possible.

• The neon from each system needs to be carefully placed in the letter maintaining at least 1/2 “ from all metallic surfaces including bend backs and sides of the channel letter etc.

The advantages of using them are very good, lighter construction, quicker installation and the variable secondary voltage ranges negating the need for perfectly sized transformers.
