never had this happen before

Gave an estimate and got a PO to do a local install for an out of state sign company. Pulled the permit and sent it to the company over a month ago. Happen to go by the site this morning and noticed that the install had been done. I've never had a company do this to me before. I will be contacting the city to cancel the permit. That permit is tied to my electrical license, if something was done wrong, there is a fire, etc, I am liable, because my name is on the permit. Anyone else had this happen to them?

Your 1st mistake was.....You did not get paid in full for the Permit, prior to pulling it. You did not get a 50% deposit on the install. If you did this, you would have money and the install. The other company was then comitted to using you. POs are only worth the paper it was written on.

The other sign company got the permit from you for free and got a cheaper install price from someone else. They win, you lose

That is why we always get paid in full ffor Permits and get 50% deposit on the install. Everyone is happy happy

Who was the other company that screwed you ?

Here in Texas usually the sign co pulling the permit is the only one who can call in the inspection, finalize it, etc. Did they actually use your permit to do the work?

I think paramount for you is to first make sure your name gets detached from the job like you mentioned. Ditto about getting paid first. I'll make calls and exchange emails with the City here prior to getting a deposit just to research a job... but I won't pull the permit until I have a deposit.\

Eugene,

I assume you must have called the sign company and what exactly did they tell you happened? Hopefully you get paid for the permit you secured.

Paul is right though, always get the money for the permit upfront and then ask for an install deposit to prevent situations like this. If the company balks, it should be a forewarning of what may be an end result you will not like.

Maybe the company you were contracted by was also blindsided by the end customer, you never know. But still you should be compensated for your work provided.

Stay on top of the situation and I hope it is resolved in a satisfactory manner for you.

Best

I had this happen one time way, way back when we first started doing work for Nationals and out of town companies. Back then I was a lot more trusting and took people at their word (or their PO). Plus I was trying to get my foot in the door with the Nationals and get a good reputation of being "easy to work with" that they alls said I needed to do so, so I was pretty much a sitting duck. It was actually a job less than 5 or 6 miles from my shop. The company that used my permit actually did the work during the night one night, so imagine my surprise when I passed by it the next morning and there were the signs all nice and shiny. Long story short - after I pulled the permit, the PM got a lower quote for the install, and rather than have the guts to call me to let me know, he just used my permit because of course they didn't have time to pull another one in time for the install. That goes under the heading once burned, once learned - that has never happened again. You have to be vigilent with some of these folks. Especially if you have never worked for them before. I hope you can get your money back.

Complete B.S.. No way would I be calm. You're doing the right thing by contacting the city. If it's your permit... I'd prosecute to the fullest extent you're able to. Get a hold of the "National", tell them the game is over. I'd go to the customer, and clue them in. I'd probably remove the sign. I bet your local city inspector would back you. If your name is on the permit, you didn't perform the work. Your butt could be liable. I'd set that sign right in front of their shop. Let that National deal with it.

Who is "said" national company? We would all love to know. We could all avoid this in the future...
