  1. It's not exactly on topic, but the 2006 International Building Code, Appendix H (Signs), Section H112 (Projecting Signs) does speak to the subject of Attachment of Supports and mentions supporting chains, guys, or steel rods.

However, the first sentence of Appendix H reads "The provisions contained in this appendix are not mandatory unless specifically referenced in the adopting ordinance." Unfortunately, I can't cut-and-paste the pages of the IBC because it is a copyrighted publication of the International Code Council. And I have no idea if Minnesota has adopted the 2006 building code in general or Appendix H specifically. (Many states only update their codes every 2nd or 3rd international code cycle)

    Thank you!

Attached is my response to the building official

Nate, I need to talk to you about this sign. There are a few issues with it: 1) thickness 2) spot/beacon light which was not shown on submitted plans 3) electrical permit has not been issued 4) the use of guy wires to support signs is prohibited per code. There is a guy wire supporting this sign, and this was not shown on the plan. If the sign cannot be supported without the use of a guy wire, I suggest it either comes down or it needs to be rescaled.

I don't have your phone number, so if you could give me a call, I would appreciate it.

I have been made aware that the down lighting fixture is not permitted. It will be removed. I did not contract the electrician, The client did. The electrician will be responsible for pulling the electrical permit. I forwarded him the permit application, weeks prior to the sign installation. This sign is self-supporting, without the guy wires. They are merely a safety factor for winds. This is a standard installation technique for projected signs, regardless of their size. We were simply following the national building code which states.

    SECTION H112 PROJECTING SIGNS

H112.1 General. Projecting signs shall be constructed entirely of metal or other noncombustible material and securely attached to a building or structure by metal supports such as bolts, anchors, supports, chains, guys or steel rods. Staples or nails shall not be used to secure any projecting sign to any building or structure. The dead load of projecting signs not par- allel to the building or structure and the load due to wind pres- sure shall be supported with chains, guys or steel rods having net cross-sectional dimension of not less than 3/8 inch (9.5 mm) diameter. Such supports shall be erected or maintained at an angle of at least 45 percent (0.78 rad) with the horizontal to resist the dead load and at angle of 45 percent (0.78 rad) or more with the face of the sign to resist the specified wind pres- sure. If such projecting sign exceeds 30 square feet (2.8 m2) in one facial area, there shall be provided at least two such sup- ports on each side not more than 8 feet (2438 mm) apart to resist the wind pressure.

H112.2 Attachment of supports. Supports shall be secured to a bolt or expansion screw that will develop the strength of the supporting chains, guys or steel rods, with a minimum 5/8 inch (15.9 mm) bolt or lag screw, by an expansion shield. Turn buck- les shall be placed in chains, guys of steel rods supporting pro- jecting signs.

H112.3 Wall mounting details. Chains, cables, guys or steel rods used to support the live or dead load of projecting signs are permitted to be fastened to solid masonry walls with expansion bolts or by machine screws in iron supports, but such supports shall not be attached to an unbraced parapet wall. Where the supports rnust be fastened to walls made of wood, the supporting anchor bolts must go through the wall and be plated or fastened on the inside in a secure manner.

  2. Does anyone know of a government backed sign installation code? I looked at the state level and found nothing pertaining to sign installations. The reason I'm asking is, we recently completed and installed a 4' x 6' projected sign. As standard in this type of installation(at least in my 20 years of experience). We added to guy wires for additional support. The city had originally approved the sign permit application, but now says that their code does not allow guy wires. The suspension cables were not shown in the drawing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  3. Great.........now that you're ready to hang up your tool belt and move to go diving every damn day !!!!!!! I hate you.

    gn

Not yet :construction: . I will be offering a trade discount on dive and spear fishing charters! For now the work is starting to pick up and we might make it down there yet this winter for a week!

  4. Oops, sorry. I've installed on corrugated buildings before--at it's a challenge.

    gn

no problem. It was a challenge. It also needs service a little more than I would like. It is very effective advertising though. My roof sign has been performing flawlessly for the last 18 years.

I have a tendency to over design and over engineer my signs and designs to where they have to be absolutely perfect and flawless. And a lot of the times they never get done. I am making progress, however

  5. Nice looking sign ------------since I know you wire signs correctly, what did you use for the penetrations on the building with the corrugation?

    gn

I was hoping nobody would ask. The border tube on my building was taken down from a video update store. The ones that needed service so often. They were double backs using electro-bits products, and going through the building with flex metal conduit. The signs neon was done in the same manner. I was actually doing a test and installed the neon on top of some Gemini letters. The signs on the front of the building was also a similar type test. I painted the insides of the letters white, cut clear lexan backs, and installed blue led's for a nice halo effect. when the blue halo mixes with the red border tube it turns purple. almost like a 2 tone halo

  6. Looking for input from those of you who have sold or purchased a sign company. I'm contemplating selling my company, which was established by me in 1991. It is a full-service commercial sign shop.

I am preparing to relocate and answer the beckoning call of the ocean....

    The countdown has begun......

Minnesota Sign Company, Inc is officially for sale. Current manufacturing facility is a 60' X 75' commercial steel bldg with a 16' overhead door. There is also a 1350sq ft overhead area (that we use for trimcap and letter assembly) underneath overhead area is finished office space. This facility was built new in 1996 specifically for sign manufacturing. It has an expandable end wall built in.It is in a high traffic location with good visability from hwy 65. The facility can be purchased or leased. All sign making equipment can be purchased along with company. Price yet to be determined depending on desired options. I will be putting together an equipment list over the next couple of weeks. What doesn't sell will accompany us on our next adventure.

It is important to note that this is not a firesale. Yes the economy is tough and we are not operating with a high profit margin at this time. We have been planning on this relocation for years.

  7. Axiom has been told and been approached by a lot of major sign companies who let us know that our competitors (Sloan, GE, Permlight, Agilight, Electraled, etc) have told end customers that Axiom owns this website, THE SIGN SYNDICATE.

That is absolute BS and is NOT true. Axiom, Manuel Lynch, any family member, any relative or any dog I have rescued or saved DOES NOT own this site.

We support this site because we love the "grass roots" nature of the site that veers away from the large industry rags that will not touch some of these sensitive topics because they are afraid of losing an advertiser or two.

We place ads on this site and have won a lot of business because people who have been successful with our products in both making good signs and in making more or saving more money in using our products.

We use this portal because we have also determined that there are some really smart people out there who we can use as vendors to AXIOM in supporting some of our different markets. In fact, there are two companies on this board that make UL listed fixtures for AXIOM that are being installed in some very large football stadiums and in some very large USA government facilities. We think of THE SIGN SYNDICATE site as an extension resource of our company.

Can anyone tell me where they work that they can walk down the hallway and get an answer to virtually any question they may have???? You cannot.

So in recap - if anyone has told you that Axiom owns this site www.THESIGNSYNDICATE.com - that is an outright sleazy and cheap lie. In fact, the first time I ever met Erik (West Coast Sign) and his wife (Kgirl) was this past week at ISA. They own and run this site...and...should be really really proud of the work they do and the community they have created.

Axiom does own www.SaveLasVegasDogs.com and www.AxiomLED.com and www.AxiomLED.co.nz (our New Zealand arm)

There are countless people on this board that can and will confirm that AXIOM does not own this website....and please do.

If anyone dares to speak up...please publicly post who has told them this BS. I heard this from Pattison Sign, the largest sign company in the world.

Love your product, look forward to using it again soon. Thanks for your help on my sign projects, top-notch customer service. At first I was worried that you were one of those animal rights wackos. Even if you are a little more to the left :flag_canada: ,your product and customer service won me over. Keep up the good work !

  8. ????????? That's the fun of scuba diving ------------- not knowing. From the looks of the stringer ---- the big one was first, and it went downhill from there????

    gn

I knew it was going to be a good dive when I had a 33 inch grouper on the stringer within the first five minutes  . The dive just kept getting better. The other fish on the stringer are yellowtail snapper, http://www.floridamarine.org/engine/downlo...;dltype=article they have an average length of 12 to 14 inches, the ones on the stringer are really good sized. They are some of the best eating fish I have tasted

  9. Very nice catch. Do you do mainly spear fishn'? I would love to in NJ but I dont like going in the water here. You never know what you will catch or what will catch onto you.

You may want to look into selling with option to get it back. Just like renting a house to own. Or taking on a partner so you can have more fun in the agwa

Thanks. I used to do a lot of hook and line fishing until I tried spearfishing underwater. I've always loved hunting as well, it kind of combines the two sports for me. It also has the added element of me being a part of the food chain, Instead of the top. For those of you who haven't tried scuba diving. I would highly recommend it. It was a life-changing experience for me. It is as close to floating through outer space as I will ever be.

Some good ideas on the business. I don't think I could handle a partner though. Dealing with new business and start up business I've seen too many partnerships fail.

  10. man that's a tough one. The equipment is easy to value but in a small business if the owner IS the work force (business) then it is hard to get a value for the earning potential of the business. When I sold my printing company we had the same issues so we went to a competitor that we had heard was looking to expand and sat down hashed out a price and was good to go. A competitor sometimes is a better shot that a startup because the competitor is already established and just can look at increasing his sales with your existing customer base. I is really helpful if you can show him several long term customers that will (over a short period of time) pay him back for his investment.

Thanks! I guess I am going to turn up the heat on sales. Work more and dive less? :bawling: After looking at the numbers it turns out my company is worth more to me than I thought. I hate to have a real job :wind45:

here is where I would like to be.... Managed to harvest these down in the keys in feb...

  11. Most of those things are excessive and don't need regulation - though California's brownouts do require some sort of added conservation.

I don't see anything wrong with turning lights off in office buildings at night, though. It used to be they were left on to avoid the start-up problems and high voltage surges every morning, and to extend the life of the fluorescent lamp. There have since been improvements with both ballasts and lamps, as well as lowered lamp costs, which offset these issues to a large extent.

I mean really - unless you leave all your house lights on 24-7, or shop & office lights on 24-7... how is it any different to leave empty office buildings on 24- as well? It makes no sense. I dislike that they feel legislation is he way to make it happen, but the intention isn't wrong.

The road to hell, communism, socialism, abolishing constitutional rights, & eliminating personal freedom is paved with "good intention"

I am now running with scissors :headbang:

  12. Hey Shooter,

What type of fuel is that running on. Does not look like a diesel fuel tank. Curious. BTW could you hang onto it for a couple more months. I am waiting to see if I get a couple of jobs and sure would love to have htat beauty!! I know, I know, gotta sell it if ya can.

    Mike B

Its on old Schwann's Ice cream truck, it runs on propane. It was a pretty sweet deal when gas was at $5 a gallon. Sorry but its priced to go........ If you want to send me 8k I will gladly hold it for as long as you like! :P

  13. Like years ago when I bought my 75' Radocy ----------------you can't do those jobs if you don't have the truck. And if the truck is as he says ------------ pretty tough to beat the $$$ either. And maybe you could get him to throw in the AK-47 to keep the cows at bay !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    gn

What ak-47? I don't have any more guns, I sold them all :ban: ! I determined them to the evil and the cause of all the worlds problems! Especially after I started seeing those silent black helicopters circling my business & my home. I need to move to a country that is much more safe and secure :flag_canada::lol_hitting:
