  2. Truck and Crane are headed to the eBay today. If you are at all interested make me an offer. I would just as soon not have to deal with eBay. I still have lamp boxes that will go with it. $8000

Buy now before it gets banned by the new administration! :lol_hitting: Please check your local laws and requirements especially if you're in the state of California,Washington,or Florida.

  4. Interesting read here..... still hard to digest all the attention given to broken glass (bulbs and neon) When I was in First grade, a very long time ago, we made paper mosaic rattles out of light bulbs for for mothers day gifts. After we covered the bulbs and it dried, we broke the bulb. In fact, my baby sister used it as a rattle for probably her first two years. Nevertheless, the mecury police is watching us.....Maybe that was what George Orwell was referring to when he wrote "1984".....the mercury police.... :yahoo: No pun intended....just having some fun. :weld:

When I was a kid In the early 80s, I lived in Brazil, South America. Kids didn't have a lot of money so they were a lot more creative and inventive. We used to make and fly our own kites, And actually have dog fights with them. We would take fluorescent tubes and crush them into a fine powder,Mix it with some glue In liquid form, Stretch out about 100 feet of kite line,And apply to the line.I remember the white clouds when I was smashing the tubes

You are then ready for battle. You would maneuver your kite into position against your opponent, and free spool line across his tight line,And watch his kite Drift away. If you were really good You would entangle Your kite's tale with his, Then cut his lineand real his kite back to you As a battle prize

  5. The TFT Octopus does that, a separate added components. But it would be a nice feature for a regular outdoor tranny.

Shooter, I'd like to think if your here and in cyber space you're still a part of the cutting edge  No matter what those slim tight jeaned punks think!

But, I have to say in fairness, half of the cool features of this site have been written by programmers who can't even legally drink yet :P

Gary's still a yougin in my book!

:headbang::headbang::headbang: The music is still not to loud! :headbang::headbang::headbang:

  6. Referring to cold. Fluroescent, neon, merc tubes in general don't like extreme cold. When cold, merc vapor condenses. Heat of the tube, heat from the trodes, etc cause the merc to vaporize ------ and brighten the tube. When its COLD - and not 78 outside--it takes forever for the glass to warm up and enable the tube to come to full brightness. Now -----eventually if the sign is on long enough, etc, it'll brighten --------- but that's just about closing time, and the sign goes off again. In the spring -----voila, nice bright sign. Now, on the other hand --------when led's don't like the cold, or just are lousy and they go out ------- they are OUT! Never again to work.

I had often hoped that somebody would invent a neon transformer that had a temperature switch inside it. That would automatically switch from 30 ma to 60 ma at a certain temperature. What happens to us as we use the 60ma transformer, So it lights up bright in the wintertime, but then the tubes get burnt in the summertime...

  7. Would I be considered old or new? I have been in the industry for over 20 years. I started laying things out with a stabilo and painting with lettering quill. I had one of the first graphics advantage design stations. I now have a large-format digital printer, and am struggling to learn new computer programs like Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. I was a ul licensed electric sign builder for over 10 years. We did a lot of individually lighted neon channel letters. I was slow to jump on the LED bandwagon. I have always been slow to try the new stuff. My motto always was, "if it isn't broken don't fix it". I also saw many sign company's having to go back out and remove the latest greatest product because it didn't work at their own expense.

I always thought I belonged to the new crowd, but after reading back over of us. I guess I sound kind of old..........

I have always been helpful to new people starting up... sometimes to a fault and that my own expense. I believe in karma, however

  8. Thats the one! Thanks

Ever get to s.p.i.? I do a little trade work at american diving/ dolphin watch

I got ahold of him, thanks. They do not have the parts that I need. I'll have to completely change my rotate gearbox and platform to use what they have. Anybody else know more I can get crane parts for the skyhook? Or know of a broken one that I can buy for parts?

  9. Here in San Diego I'm starting to see more towable lifts for sign companies. Even companies who have the Elliots, they have added a few trailers or towables to their fleets.

Here in one in particular I would like to get. This could have saved me some danger for a monument sign insert install that I could not have gotten a truck into the area.

    http://www.biljax.com/News/NPage88.aspx

you can even use it to lift some heavy items up

It definitely would come in handy if you can't get your truck to the area. But on your standard fluorescent lamp change service call, I would be done with mine and onto the next one, Before you got your equipment unloaded and reloaded :headbang:

  10. Well, the two I used had outriggers just like a truck, made no difference if the lot was flat or not. Getting into postion a problem?? No more difficult------------than a truck. It probably all goes back to the rig, the trailer, and how its set up.

    gn

Have you tried parallel parking your truck and trailer with the towable lift on Main Street to get at a storefront sign that need service or installation? Or maybe going across some rough terrain to get a new pylon installation?

The reason I made reference to a parking lot wasn't because it was level. :vio (33): It was because of not having any obstructions. :tumbleweed:

Having used both,I was simply offering my experience as to the question asked.Yes, working off a towable lift is much better than working off of a ladder, but for me, the cost savings of insurance do not offset the constant hassle of trying to get a towable lift, where I needed to be.

I'm sure this is the main reason Why you don't see more towble lifts at sign Companies.

  11. I have used them before. If you're in a flat parking lot with no obstructions. They can work fine.

I have found them to be extremely difficult to get into position to do the job. When I first started, I thought this would be a reasonable alternative to a truck mounted crane or lift. After trying them out, I decided against it and went with the standard truck mounted crane and truck mounted lift.

  12. FYI, Phoenix was bought out by Manitex in 2003.

And from what I understand the Crane Center, bought All existing inventory. It looks like it's going to be increasingly more difficult to get parts for the old reliable skyhook. Looks like it's time to seriously consider an Elliot upgrade.
