  1. Just received my latest issue of Sign Craft. Looking at it I realized that this month and every other month the sign designs all look the same just with different copy. What's the deal? Is it just me or is there not a fresh idea to be seen in that mag. To me it looks like the same 2 or 3 people have designed every job featured in the mag for the last several years. Anyone else see it that way? I am sick of seeing the same fonts/designs and carved signs over and over with just different text!!!!!!!

  2. Agreed. I think it was a big info mag with only one or two articles per addition. Also, it was packed with too much retail push screen digital signage. I don't know about anyone else but I haven't got too many requests for that.

How true - Sign Builder mag is not too bad but seems to be heading the same way

  3. I don't understand why he wasn't set up behind the trailer where it looks like he has some skirting laying on the lot?

Here in Indiana if you don't have the lines shielded and they drive by you are shut down, even if they are shielded and you are closer than 10 ft your are shut down.

  4. That's an easy question---------he didn't get paid, like in a pervious post, and is taking his trannies back ---------OR----------the guy sold a sign somewhere, couldn't afford his own transformers, and couldn't get paid until the sign was lit. And truth be told----he was probably NOT stealing them--when in fact he was just borrowing them so he could finish his sign, intent to return in about 90 days.

Gee why didn't I think of that!

  5. Caught On Camera

Police want to know who the man pictured is.

He is believed to have stolen 15 transformers that were attached to a neon sign on the corner of Cobden St and Karangahape Rd.

The theft took place on the morning of Sunday, October 12, and the transformers are valued at $5,000.

Police investigations to date have not resulted in the man being identified and the owner of the transformers has, in the past few days, taken it upon himself to publish the man's picture on billboards throughout the city in an attempt to identify him and recover the missing equipment.

Sergeant Roy Simpson says a witness to the removal of the transformers took the photos that were supplied to Police, as he felt the incident was suspicious at the time.

"The photographer has been able to provide excellent evidence and it's only a matter of time before the man in the photo is identified," Mr Simpson says.

"This is a classic example of how the community and Police can - and do - work together to detect and resolve crime."

Anyone who knows who the man is or who's been offered all of some of the 5 Siet neon transformers should contact Sergeant Simpson on 09 302 6483.

The man in the photograph is wearing a grey camouflage top, black pants and an orange flouro vest with the words 'Spring Hill' written on the back

I wonder why he picked transformers to steal, Is there a market for them or am I missing something?

  6. Okay....I got a few of you ranting a while back when I posted a not so flattering post of someone new to me. Got some of you guessing right.....tee hee hee.

Well, I haven't been on lately due to the following. I have been "laid off" due to lack of work. DUH......when I asked him if I was laid off he said..."I don't know the term for it, but I will call you in when I need you." ie....layoff &*%$(*&^. k...being polite there....didn't want to say what i was thinking. Not only that but on top of all of this...my house caught fire....been living in a Holiday inn.....yea me....when it rains it pours. But back on subject.

Now, instead of me coming into work, he calls me for my knowledge of the sign industry. He has fired the designer because the designer asked to many questions. And he keeps me hangin on. I love working in the sign industry and want so much to do what I love.

In the last 4 weeks I have worked 3 hours and that was to install vinyl to a door for him because he fired the one person who was to do that job. Good thing I know how to weed, mask, & apply vinyl. He has called me on several occassions to get information out of me. The first time I just blearted out the information cause I wasn't thinking....second and third time i just said...yes I know the answer to that...but didn't give it to him.

Here is my question........he is going to want to pay me for the 3 hours only....not the time that he has me on the phone doing consulting work.....do I send him a bill for that or fight for pay for that time. My job decription is not for consulting...but he can't do it without asking me questions....why....cause he doesn't know crap about the sign business.

I think you already know the answer - now is the time to move on! your wasting your time dealing with this particular owner

Help...answers good and bad welcome.....I love the sarcasm that comes with these posts. Love you guys!!

  7. I actually think red is a good study due to the massive use of red within the industry. But, I think this study may best serve the site and the public by not only comparing brightness and coverage but also by realistically looking in to the cost of red LED vs. Neon.

Again, the short and long term costs should be taken in to consideration.

In the traditional sign industry, most of us try to talk clients out of utilizing blue neon and blue acrylic faces because the letters blend together, signs become hard to read and the lack of brightness makes the signs less noticeable during nighttime hours.

I typically encourage those who want "blue" as a main color for channel letters to utilize white faces with a first-surface blue vinyl overlay and to maintain a white border around the entire letter to allow for some contrast at night.

On the flip side, exposed blue neon or blue neon/LED as cove or accent lighting is a different subject altogether. It's eye-catching and soothing. That said, border/exposed neon and cove lighting is just too minimal to consider worthy of such a case study.

So, there's my THREE cents worth.

I'll participate with whatever color you decide to roll with.

Thanks again for this forum and opportunity to express my thought.

    I totally agree

I can send countless pics of blue letters that you can't tell what they say when you get 20 feet from them

  8. Our business is up almost 400% and growing faster than we had ever expected. We see people seeing the economic advantage of our products versus the other companies. And we are even seeing some of the big box retailers (Home Depot, Lowes, etc) as interested in carrying our products on their shelf to allow sign companies to go to local hardware stores to buy LED sign and lighting products...expect this in 2009.

Met with California sign company this morning that said that their business in "budget" type stores is booming.

So the average joe (the plumber) will be able to buy your products for the same price as sign professionals?
