  1. in some places (India, Las Vegas, etc) extra wire is sometimes a problem - especially when theives are ripping off any wire they can find to recycle it for money for drugs!

I heard the most ridiculuos story the other day - a guy ripped the LED modules out of a sign to take the wire to be recycled...I thought - why not resell the LED modules!!!

  2. I was going to ask about this anyway. When the company buys LEDs it has done so most often lately from Sloan. We seem to have to always squeeze the wire linking the LEDs. The LEDs will be wired at some distance and spec-ed out at a closer distance. Why?

It would be nice if Sloan would respond to this - but I doubt they ever would - we always recommend using our modules as already spaced.

Two national sign companies stated that Sloan layouts usually specify 1.5X more modules than are actually needed.

So how about I try this - instead of paying $3.25 for our module I think you should pay $4.87 or 1.5X the price...what do you think???? Haha

  3. Where have I been? I didn't know you guy's would do this. Think I'll stop doing it mayself.

Funny. And I hear that Permlight will cut out your letter backs to and build the replacement CHASE signs for you.

  4. 2 modules per foot is the usual guideline - it's what we provided (based on 2 strokes). Our modules are brighter than Sloan's GW2 so I have no idea how they recommend 1.5 modules per foot. If anything it should be 2.5 modules per foot - but that would kill the sign shops cost-wise.

Your mid-level WG-2 will still outperform the usual suspects and it will be brighter and more even than a single stroke of the WG-3. There would actually be room in the can for Erik to mount a single row of those in between the WG-2's, but they won't be lit at all times like the other products in the test. You could just use it as an alternate measurement to know how it stacks up against your own product in a different arrangement. That was my thought in possibly provided our 3.0W modules, but decided it doesn't make sense since it isn't what most shops would opt for and we'll probably eliminate it altogether since we're working on something larger for really big letters and sign boxes.

totally agreed. I am going to send you the sketch of the fixture we wanted to work with you on for the AXLE3Wg65-3 series modules...need your expertise on this.

  5. I don't have room for all three, just send me your brightest with a power source you want to compare to others. But I think you will need more than single stroke for your axel3 (but that's your call)

Sloan GW2 will have double stroke in a slot.

Will send 12 pcs of the AXLE3WG-2 if it is comparing to the Great White...ours may be a bit less expensive...and brighter...maybe :P

  6. How many of you are seeing price increases as a result of truly justified inflation vs companies that are using inflationary concerns as a means of justifying price increases?

With inflation rates in China at around 10%, Vietnam at 29%, India around 11% and USA now at 5% - are there concerns out there and how are your end customers taking it?

Also - what are your views on most manufacturing moving to China but inflation rising quickly there...is this a short term concern for anyone? Once again, what if a product was made in the USA, in Canada, or in your resident country for less than an imported product from China? Does that provide a nationalistic marketing value to you as a selling tool to your end customers?

For example - we are building portions of and the final assembly of our CCFL downlights in California. The product will be about the same manufacturing price as in China (factoring transportation costs, time, etc). This was a huge selling point to our end customer - the #2 builder of homes in the USA. They saw it as a marketing selling point to end customers.

Thoughts and opinions on inflation would be appreciated - it is creeping up on us.

  7. Enough for a double stroke (8"W x 3' L x 5" deep) layout, how many per line is your specification. Sloan says to use 1.5 modules per foot for their great white 2 modules, others are 3-4 per foot.

I'm doing the layouts as the manufacturer's specifies, that way I don't get blamed :P

Neon is 4" & 32" on centers (Grid)

    We will send the following:

12 pcs of AXLE3WG65-1 (spaced 2 per foot, double stroke) at 0.7W each or 8.4Watts or $3.25 ea for a total of $39.00

9 pcs of AXLE3WG65-2 (use zig zag spacing) at 1.5W each or 13.5 Watts or $4.50 ea for a total of $40.50

6 pcs of AXLE3WG65-3 (single line down the center of 8" wide stroke, 2 per foot) at 2.2W ea or 13.2Watts or $6.00 ea for a total of $36.00

We will send 1pc of our 60Watt 90-277VAC input 15VDC power supplies ($35.00) - you could run all three sets off the one supply.

    Is that ok?

  8. YYZ's are in. Eurocom/Phillips are in. Manuel yours in transit? Spoke with another GE rep who joined recently, supposed to hear back on them.

I'm going to take it SloanLED is a no show & Lumificient wants no part after he said he would gladly volunteer. We can go with USLED instead I guess

My mistake - how many modules do you need for your eval?

  9. There is also software like Neon/LED Wizard which can help out.

I agree - and our modules are listed in the software. Dont you think sign companies should do their own layout since they are the ones selling the sign to the end customer?

  10. Are there any members on this board from New Zealand?

Anybody been to New Zealand - share any insights into things to see on North Island?

This is what I know from recent trips:

    1. More cows than sheep now

    2. Largest diary exporter in the world

    3. First country to allow women to vote

    4. One of the first countries to completely legalize prostitution

    5. Most power is from water generated power

    6. Most young go to Australia to work

    7. Medical completely covered

    8. College education paid for

    9. Highest tax rate is 30%

    10. Quasi combo socialist turning privatized capitalist government

Spoke with a customer recently that shared a lot of info - just wondering if anyone else out there can add.

  11. A lot of sign companies that convert from SloanLED to AXIOM LEDs always ask if we would do layouts like Sloan.

On a given job our products are about $500-1000 less in cost for the same or higher performance.

I have a basic problem with an LED company doing a sign layout - it basically is taking the "know how" away from the sign company and relying on an LED company who may have limited experience in building signs for end customers.

I am curious to hear people's opinions on relying on a supplier to do a sign layout for you.

Also if we are saving customers the amount we are would it be crazy for us to charge $100 to do a layout guide?

  12. you should be very proud of the community you have put together - it is both a resource, a feedback site, a "whats happening" site, and a way to just complain about things.

There is a really good book I would recommend for you called BRILLIANT...forget what it talks about in LEDs, but focus on what it talks about when it talks about people that are fundamental to changing the mechanics of an industry. http://www.amazon.com/Brilliant-Nakamura-R...6956&sr=8-1

You are not a major sign magazine - you dont have a ton of advertising dollars...but you have stuck with it and made it one of the more visited sites in the industry.

You should be really proud. Here is to your efforts

  13. I wasn't going to take any potshots after the little news announcement, but you're right. What caught my eyes, though, was not the items you mentioned - which are your typical talking points that make any LED system sound good - but the following:

Lumination notes that the Tetra Max reduces complex wiring and eliminates binning, dip switches, and load balancing through its patent-pending, 12-volt design of Tetra MAX.

This, too, sounds like they are doing something different than other LED companies, when the fact of the matter is it was only GE who had the stupid dip switches, special wiring tools and load balancing to begin with.

Lumination notes that our wives no longer have to hide their bruises behind their make up or under long sleeve shirts!

A very prominent sign company executive says only GE makes a product with "DIP SHITS" on it for the sign industry.

The comment on the shirt/make up - LMAO

  14. GE always writes these things like they are the only ones in the world:

    • SloanLED has systems that are 1.2 Watts per linear foot
    • US LED has systems that are 1.1 Watts per linear foot
    • Permlight has a system that is 0.8 Watts per linear foot
    • And yes AXIOM has a product that is 0.6 Watts per linear foot in red - call us if you want to save 3/10th of a watt !!!!

How much is this RED LED system per linear foot - anyone know?

I know a few systems that sell in very high volume in RED that is $3.25 per linear foot.

  15. thanks for posting this article - it does show how it is going to get incredibly confusing as other cities adopt their own codes for this. It does seem odd in Las Vegas that LED billboard signs cannot use any animation but the signs on highway 15 for the hotels can...they are in Paradise. However there is an LED billboard sign in Paradise that cannot use simple animation.

Too complicated - I think getting the strippers to stand on the corner holding a sign is more effective...and hell if the sign could have neon on it (something you can see during the day time) it would be even better.

  16. Lily - call me at 702-430-8917. I know of a few sign companies that would be interested in talking to you - close to home too. We also are looking for representatives to sell our LED modules for channel letters in California.

    Manuel

  17. I totally agree with you - people forget their web presence. Doesnt make much sense in today's biz world. We update our site constantly.

On the "other" company - we know quite a bit about their light engines....as I think you now know. This business has slowed down a lot.

Interesting you noted the festoon product dropped off - I think this is the one product they still sell. Their head of sales is very focused on kitchen and bath designers who love this stuff. But then again due to economic conditions in the USA I think this biz is suffering. I also hear that Kichler will be introducing something like this at Home Depot and Lowes and the world will be a bit different.

Your LEDStroke product looks good and I commend you on the design and implementation. You will do well with this product along with your cove product.

For those that have not seen - YYZ cove product is simple - very consistent - very high brightness - and works to replace neon in cove lighting.

Marko - can you comment on Canadian sign companies - you know this arena...

And one other comment to those reading - YYZ and Axiom are competitors but this board accentuates how two (2) companies can work together and accentuate each others strengths. The biz world is changing - my suggestion is to embrace competition instead of ignoring and not communicating with them.

  18. Now I knew that if I hung in there long enough --------- you'd come up with a GREAT idea!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Better yet, skip the session on land, and just do it on the boat.

    gn

Funny Gary. You can have your entire "session" anywhere you like - but she might come strapped in cool LEDs..hahaha
