  1. so there are no 3M films that provide diffusion that also provide UV protection? Seems odd that not such a beast exists.

3m has a Frosted Crystal (Sand-Blasted Look) #7725SE-324 which is UV resistant and can be applied to the first surface. You would also want to apply a second layer of one of their white diffuser films, either 40% or 60% light transmission. These films are not UV resistant and will need to either be laminated w/ the Frosted Crystal on top exposed to the elements or on the second surface of the polycarbonate sheet.

FWIW ... I'm sure you are aware but thought I would mention the polycarbonate sheet needs to be UV resistant as well ... so any sanding or sandblasting you do would need to be on the second surface of the sheet otherwise your clear panel w/ yellow from the UV.

Last idea ... GE has a clear lexan sheet ... SG308 that is UV resistant and has a matte (textured) finish on the first surface ... You could apply the diffuser to the second surface and drop out the areas that needed to remain clear.

Thank you Kevin...and yes I figured out someone like you would know the answer - thank you. Hopefully our power supply can work out for you. Will send this link to company in New Zealand...much appreciated.

  2. Sean - I am trying to get the dialogue started and then I am going to have him click a link and join - he is doing some great things but can always learn more.

Here is the company - www.MAGAssembly.com - and they use EGL Neon all the time.

We all know how to do this with acrylic - but how do we do this with a product that can pass all the flammability issues?

This is supposed to be a forum where we help or advise - there has to be someone lurking on here that could post and help the group out.

I am asking this for a company in New Zealand - I want them to realize that this board is a resource for such questions.

  4. I would think sandblast.

You could sandblast one side and UV coat the other side - right?

Would all of you have an issue if this is sitting in direct sunlight facing up all day long? Wont it become brittle in time?

Friend at LSI suggested using UV film over polycarbonate - anyone do this?

  5. What about when it needs to be polycarbonate and it is exposed to the sun all day long - any suggestions for UV resistant film that can also be a diffuser? We have a very large application needing a product like this.

  6. Jamie -

we have a large billboard customer in the Southern hemisphere who purchased the first prototype units for a quick retrofit of the metal halide 400 Watt fixtures. We ran it by the government to confirm is still complies with all the safety standards and they confirmed it did.

We are finding more people wanting to stay with 250 Watt lamps as opposed to moving to fewer 400 Watt metal halide lamps. Our system will be 96-124 Watts depending on how you want to run it.

  7. we wanted to thank all the people that contacted us and asked if all was ok - everything is fine at AxiomLED/KiwiLED - we are based in Auckland which is 500 miles from Christchurch where the earthquake hit.

The earthquake was bad because it hit very low - only 3 miles down - and caused some massive damage. The town of Christchurch has about 500,000 people and is the 2nd largest city.

The people are being told to conserve water because they may not have drinkable/potable water for months.

I have already received lots of emails from our customers in Christchurch that are pushing through this and already getting their shops up and running.

This is a really bad thing that happened but it is really neat to see how fast this country pulls together to step up and move through it. The most fascinating thing was a few hours after the earthquake the Prime Minister was at "ground zero" where buildings were falling down and was "live on the air" answering questions from reporters... his name is John Key...and for you Americans....he got his training in the USA and is a ball busting right wing conservative who is very respected by all.

Anyway - thank you for your emails and concern - I even got some emails from competitors and that showed me that I guess people are still people - but thank you Gary, Larry, Doug, Marcello... we are still shining!!!

I personally am moving back to the USA at the end of February and am looking forward to seeing some of you in Las Vegas....especially Chubby Gumpy!!!!

  8. And I am a HMFIC...

If the guy at Permlight was a Chief Tech "Officer" he would be an officer of the company and would be on the board of directors

Their Chairman of the Board does not want anyone he doesn't trust on his board- Permlight is a very crooked and broken company. Sad to see it go from such a high place at one point to virtually nothing now

  9. Brian we really took this thread the wrong way. I apologize.

I am the first person to say LEDs are not for everything - in fact I often tell customers to use neon or t5 fluorescent

I find it amusing when a new technology comes on the scene how many ODD applications comes as a result. For example little blue Viagra pill was actually a high blood pressure pill that Pfizer was doing a clinical trial on - they found other things it "helped" by accident. I know this first hand because I car pooled with the husband of the Pfizer rep who discovered this.

So when someone tells me they use our lights for an application that is ODD - I like to share. I knew nothing about dairy processing - now I do. What I failed to say is that the company was evaluating rewiring all of their facilities to t5 fluorescent. We came up with a way they could have less power consumed, have the same light, and it would cost less because they did not have to re-wire. So we listened and solved their problem. They had started on the path of changing lights due to repeated fires.

So I apologize for being rude. That was inappropriate

And Brian I am an American and proud of it. I am moving back to the USA. And while New Zealand is great in someways it is not perfect for everything- just like LED lighting

    So let's stop this bickering

And FYI - in regards to Indiana - my father went to Notre Dame and about 20 years ago I use to go to Ft Wayne to visit Magnavox military - made electronics for the Navy.

    So please accept my apologies.

And your comment about "rich" - boy am I far from that financially but I am sure getting a richer understanding of the world by living different places. Spain or Panama next!

  10. http://apps1.eere.en...replacement.pdf

I dont know if this was posted but cut and paste. They have some pretty good info on there.

Yeah, the info is good but Manuel seems to dismiss the DOE caliper report findings as nothing more than propoganda. Seems ironic he should feel this way as the "movements and trends" this "brilliant" salesman champions are the very same type of propoganda.

Can't wait to here the next world problem these amazing LED's are going to solve :laughing1:

I Caliper was and is so great - why did the US Government tell the DOE that now Energy Star will handle this...so essentially Caliper will probably die....can you answer this?

GE is in the White House now...these use someone else's LEDs....amazing how the shift has already started.

  11. Fonterra is the company behind a large portion of milk products used in the USA - including milk chocolate etc. But you know it doesnt make any sense to try and tell you anything. You love to start arguments - join the Tea Party.

For those in California - the "California Cows" are actually New Zealand cows and the commercials are filmed in New Zealand... Got Milk....

I met with a man in Australia whose daughter is the world leading researcher on reducing methane levels in cows - my original comment about cow farts was wrong. It is cow burps that are causing 85% of the methane. I mentioned the fire issues to him and he was well aware of them.

Yes, explosion proof fixtures are used - they are made of Polycarbonate - which as all the educated people on this website know - does not do very well with exposure to UV. Since fluorescent is outputting UV it is making the fixtures fragile and they are cracking and breaking. Broken or open fixtures are what cause problems. Please note that explosion proof fixtures are also full enclosed and not much heat is going out.

So now I ask all brilliant sign people in Indiana - what happens when you have high heat and high UV in polycarbonate?

And Brian - Columbus I am not but...I was written about in a book titled "Brilliant" - read it sometime - I start movements and trends. Here is info on the book

    http://www.amazon.com/Brilliant-Nakamura-Revolution-Lighting-Technology/dp/1591024625

have a great weekend Brian... not sure you are coming to Las Vegas to see the new lights...are you, we might miss you!

  12. Thank you all for your colorful comments.

I am sure you all know who Fonterra is... Bryan, they are the largest Dairy company in the world.. you like to learn more, read up http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fonterra

Funny that you posted this - your timing is just perfect. We had a rather extensive meeting on this the other day with the world's largest dairy producer and there is another issue that was causing fires...heat build up.

So we did a comparison study and our new LED tubes that they have specified to use are reducing the surface temperature of the ceiling by 30 degrees celsius over the electronic ballast T8 system they were using before.

We also did a video on this and I will post it here in a few days. The performance of our system was better than fluorescent and required no rewiring at all. The product is therefore in compliance with Safety Standards around the world because you would not modify the UL listed fixture at all - you would just change the bulb.

And I can be a little more colorful and entertaining if you would like....we are having a party in Las Vegas, and we have introduced a product that looks like a pole....now come on, use your imagination!!! hahaha.

Fire is the primary reason why Fonterra is moving away from fluorescent to LED. And while it makes a lot of sense to "turn the lights out" - kind of hard to do in factories that are running production 24 hours a day.

And...for the record...just because you dont believe it, doesnt mean it isnt happening.

After all - I think they all that Christopher Columbus was crazy when he said that the world was not flat.

  13. concrete building sidings make good heatsinks - hell, feel the sidewalk in Las Vegas in the summer - there is a reason why the heat last all night long at times.

Mounted to wood with air will be actually worse than the side of a building. In your shop you dont have a lot of air moving. Letters on the side of a building have air flow over them all the time. Air is a coolant.

So I think to solve all of this Erik should put the signs all over the outside of his house!!! hahaha
