  1. Totally agree with you on accounting - I use to be a VP for NASDAQ company and always thought how numbers were twisted was rather unusual.

Also agree with you on Siemens, Osram or Philips point.

    Thanks for your comments.

GE seems to be the only company who has come up with have decent packing for LEDs. Placing exposed circuit boards (even sealed with a conformal coating) in outdoor signs is not good design practice. It might save you money, but in the long run the LEDs will fail.

I honestly don't think LEDs save much if any money over other efficient types of lighting, really the advantages are extremely long life and the small package size.

I think most LED lamp fixture manufactures are "Cheating" - they put LED lighting in fixtures with well designed optics and compare to a traditional lamp with no optics and say wow look at the energy savings.

Two large problems facing the LED industry are reliability - some product doesn't even last a year and consistent package design - manufacturers keep changing the package design. HO lamps circa 1960's are still available. LED lamp packages circa august 2009 may not be available in September.

  2. Hmmm - sounds like this product running 12 hours a day will last about 1 year....I hope the sign company got the maintenance contract!!!

Saw a proposal to use EL signage on the area of the countertop where you pick up your coffee at Starbucks - now that was clever - could change signage every few months. More practical application.

4,000 hours / 12 hours a night = 333 days or under a year of life. This is not a proper application for EL

ON TIME: McHale Sign Co. worker Mike Verlik installs a 16-foot clock tower Thursday in downtown Redding as Leadership Redding Class of 2004 member Jeff Mulvihill walks past.

Telling time will be easier for passers-by near the Veterans Memorial Hall in downtown Redding, owing to a new clock that was installed Thursday.

The town clock was dedicated Thursday on Yuba Street during the weekly MarketFest and will be known as the Judge Richard B. Eaton Memorial Clock in honor of the late Shasta County judge.

The $13,000 clock comes courtesy of the Leadership Redding Class of 2004 and community donations. Architect James Theimer designed the clock so its stand resembles the misters in nearby Library Park.

"Judge Eaton was considered the town grandfather and historian, and we wanted to honor him with this timepiece," said Michael Burke, the project leader and an alumnus of the Leadership Redding class.

GOING UP: Kevin Corey of McHale Sign Co. prepares the clock face to be lifted by a crane Thursday. The illuminated clock will be handy at night.
