  1. Only thing that I didn't care or that the newscaster said was the LEDs were "Environmentally Friendly", that's false. Red Neon glass is 100% recyclable, contains nothing but gas and glass and doesn't degrade in light over time like the LEDs will.

Other than that, nice job, nice publicity, nice story. I bet it was real easy retrofitting those letters on the job in the field!

I agree but when she said "Environmentally Friendly", I think she is referring to the power consumption savings. This was the first time we used Sloan Flex tube and it was tedious to get the flex where it needed to be.

  2. very nice! did you remove just the cans bring back repaint them and install the tubing? any pics of during install/removal?

Thank You. No we were not able to remove the letters because of political reasons. We had to do all the work in the air. We removed a whole pickup of electrical stuff from the old neon. We sanded the 60 year old metal letters with 80 grit vibe sanders. We primed all bear metal and painted with three coats of enamel paint. We also did the same for the steel frame. We used a 125ft lift to reach the sign. The worst part is it rained almost every day for the three weeks we worked. I will send pictures this week.

  3. Gary all the Walmarts in our area are using gexpro power supplies not sure what the leds are I will ask my guys in the morning if they know and get back to you. All the pylon signs in our area are lit with 400w mh hids.

  4. are most ballasts magnetic or electronic ballasts these days?

In failures is it always the bulb or do the transformers/ballasts fail?

And do you use 400 Watt more than 250 Watt?

    Magnetic.

I would say 70/30 Lamps fail at a higher rate then ballast .

Depending on the application most pole lights are 400. Most under canopy lights are 250. Security wall packs are 250 and 175.

Manuel If your leaning towards an led alternative to MH we are very interested. Lsi and bata have good products but they only sell to lighting supply houses cutting us out of the equation. If we want to sell them we have to mark up retail prices.

  5. Yes we are in a safety group and receive all discounts. Look at the groups policy prices, mine gets 10% of the WC policy for their policy. They give a return, but we are never ahead. We are paying the price for everyone who has no insurance.

Paul, This is a joke. Last month I got a 49% increase and immediately complained and wanted to know why. The state insurance fund reasoning was JUST BECAUSE, everyone is going to pay more. In 11 years of business I have never had a claim. I don't know if it is this way all across the country but the increase in cost to due business is getting out of control. Taxes, Insurance, Osha, Ul, EPA, DOT. Over the last year we have been forced to lay off two part time guys and one of my four service/install guys. Don't take me wrong, business is booming but it is struggle to continue to turn a profit and grow when everyone is in your pocket. I guess we can all thank our politicians for this economic trend. Anyone who thinks we live in a democratic state is sadly mistaken, we live in a socialist state that thinks redistribution of wealth will fix everything. Well they are wrong. All they are doing is forcing us to charge more.

  6. I'm looking for interested companies who would like to do bi-weekly service for a major bank to send me your contact info if you are in the following regions

  7. We're retrofitting an old 1920's Theatre Marquee - would like to replace the moulding with something at least SIMILAR to what once existed - anybody know whare to go for this? Pictures attached.

    THANKS!!

you can make a negative impression from your molding then reproduce the new molding out of fiberglass. If you dont have a fiberglass guy I can hook you up with mine.

  8. Does anyone have any advice for dealing with a competitor who has nothing better to do than to follow our guys around and take photos, checking with the city to make sure we have all the proper permits, and that the sign has been inspected, and etc, etc, etc.

He thinks his company walks on water and is busy turning in all the other companies for minor infractions just to hassle them and create a ruckus with the city. I have considered putting a restraining order on him, but does anyone know how to deal with this in an effective manner?

If he continues to turn you in and you are not doing anything wrong. It is called harassment. If you can establish a pattern any Judge will hold him liable and if you can prove he cost you money you will get paid. If it was me, I would at the lease send him a letter by my attorney stating if he continues to harassment you without knowing the faxes you will hold him liable. Trust me he will think twice about doing it again.

  9. what size truck is it on, and did you already get it, how much?$$ if you do not mind saying

    a

New your state has a crazy crane law so our stick lenth could not exceed 40ft. we have around 54ft working height on the bucket. We will be using the truck for evryday install and service work so we wanted to mounted the lift on a ford 550 to keep the truck versatile. We traded in a 05 f450 with an eti 42' bucket sam gave us a great price. Email me I'll give you details tony@victorysign.net.

  10. Anybody own a Skylift s70 on a 5ton truck? What do you think compare to Elliot and Manitex

I just purchased a 55 skylift. I purchased the skylift because they will custom make the lift and bed to my specs, not to mention It cost 30k less than an Elliot. I have worked off Elliot's and manitex they are awesome units but you pay for it.. I was on vacation in FL and saw a sign company working off a skylift I stopped and talked with them and they said they loved the unit and had nothing bad to say. I'll let you know in 3 weeks how I like mine.
