  1. The fact that companies are falling behind is a warning sign that your gonna get burned. The dangling carrot of more work needs to be understood in the light of what happened with Image Points failure. Companies that do not manage cash flow will fail and if we let them be sloppy with payment then we add to the problem & get what we deserve. Everyone needs to stick together, it's for the best of all concerned if we don't lend money, particularly to those that are not responsible.

    I think the tangling carrot is a great way to motivate sign companies into doing good work. If you screw up on a job you will not be getting a chance to do it again. More so is a tangling check in front of a company........the best motivator of all!

  2. We all need to be careful with late payment particularly in this economy. We must insist on deposits when fabricating & service calls need to be paid within the terms. When installing for other sign companies we need to be paid within the agreed terms or walk away from future jobs and let everyone know about the deadbeats. If we allow people to use our money we need to consider the risk & understand that we will get burned eventually. I feel we should be honest and expect the same from our clients. If they want us to work for them then we should not be shy about demanding payment. Our focus should be on doing great work & not begging for payment.

    If a customer asks for 50% I give it to them if they don't I wont send it to them.........I find that more and more are asking for a deposit, even the companies that install on a regular basis for me.....I think it is always a smart move to ask for it then your front end is covered! I agree with the last comment......do great work when installing and I will always pay promptly. The problem is it is hard to find those "great" sign companies! Always looking though!

  3. our national accts are getting to be the worst offenders.

    A friend that works at a sign supply says almost all of their accounts are now paying beyond 30 days

    We used to pay our sign install contractors around 20-30 days and they loved us for that but with the slow payment from our National customers we are close to 45 days now.........I personally try to get them paid as quickly as possible because I want to be able to count on them down the road.

  4. Thanks for your response, I hope your week is starting off well. There were approx 22 associates within the IT department. Yes, all company records were kept offsite on mirrored servers to not only maintain system integrity but to provide secure data storage.

    Sara.......you can tweek my computer anytime! It looks like by your experience you will have no problem getting a position somewhere.........wish you could replace our bonehead IT guy! Good Luck!

    ImagePoint has shut down its sign manufacturing plant in Florence, idling about 180 full-time and part-time employees.

    The Knoxville, Tenn.-based manufacturer said in a press release that it’s immediately terminating its sales and manufacturing operations and seeking buyers for parts of its business. Some employees will continue for a few weeks to finish installations already under way, it said.

    Bill Edge, former general manager of the Florence facility, said he was told the company is being liquidated by its creditors. Edge was abruptly terminated Friday morning after two men from the parent company showed up unannounced in Florence and gave him the news, he said. They told him they were instructed to shut down the machinery and turn off the power.

    Jim Martin, ImagePoint’s CEO in Knoxville, said in the statement that it was forced to close because of poor economic conditions, and particularly their impact on automotive and restaurants businesses.

    ImagePoint makes large illuminated signs for national accounts such as McDonald’s, GM and Chevrolet dealers, John Deere, and 7-Eleven. It was previously known as Plasti-Line before changing its name in 2003. Plasti-Line had acquired Northern Kentucky-based American Sign in the 1980s.

    ImagePoint last year closed a plant in Columbia, S.C., and consolidated those operations in Florence.

    Martin said ImagePoint is in a good position to sell parts of its business to competitors.

    One competitor in the sign business is Blue Ash-based LSI Industries (NASDAQ: LYTS). LSI earlier this week lowered its earnings and sales forecast for 2009, citing the recession. Profits and sales in its signs-and-graphics division declined 77 percent and 40 percent, respectively, in its latest reported quarter that ended Sept. 30, 2008.

  6. Why was the crane in that position instead of over infront of the poles? I have learned over the 35 years that you always try and lift your load over the back of your truck not the front or sides if possible!

    I had a helper do the exact same thing years ago.......I told my boss that the guy should not be operating the crane but he said just set it up for him so all he has to do is load up and rotate (I was on a aerial truck installing the flex faces) This guy rotated into 100K power lines with me on the trailer.....damnest thing I had ever seen......bolts of electricity coming from the riggers under the asphalt!

    Everything went up......the tanks blew for the torches, the plastic 5 gallon gas tank melted on the bed of truck catching everything on fire. The airport thought a plane had gone down and sent their emergency trucks down the runway (we were very close to the runway)............I still remember this like it was yesterday. Lucky to be alive!
