  1. See it all the time. A large Natl., who I haven't worked with, but 2 times in 8 yrs. Has started sending me a lot of bid requests.. ( Red flag in my book. They either pissed off everyone else, or have them strung out on $$) . One came over the other day to do a full survey of an existing free standing large restaurant. All elevations, sign types and sizes, Pole sign, lamp-ballast count...You know the deal.. Fill out our paperwork, send individual pics, all for $150.00! Told them double it, and I'm still breaking even. They said, lets split the difference @ $200.00. Told them no thanks.

  2. I also refuse to sell a church a message center. I go as far as building sensible signs for them at 10% over my cost. I've had many disappointed and disgruntle church folks in the last 24 years. IMO, the last thing a church needs to spend money on is an expensive sign. That turns it into a business.

  3. Painting properly is a big investment. Paint booth, spray gun, compressor. Then the untold gallons of paint (mix), additives, primer. But if you're going to offer your customers true custom signs. You need to invest. Oh, don't forget about someone who knows how to paint. Matthews does a school every now and then, It's worth it to send your painter/helpers to it.

  4. If you are a listed shop, UL or Met. All signs need to be listed. All your components need to be recognized. Not sure how MET does their field inspections. UL does un announced visits. Where they look at the signs you're currently building. As well as check out your paperwork on the previous signs you've made. You must document your parts/components on every sign you make. I don't release the UL labels until the sign is put into the system.

Also, you need to watch out for fake UL listed products. I have a friends shop who got burnt big time.

Saving a few bucks on cheap Chinese lighting components, and cutting corners. Is the quickest way, to not being in business for the long haul.

Not sure how FL. works. Here in Texas, especially in the DFW area. You can not install a non listed electrical sign. (except in a few cities).

  5. One a whole lot smaller than that. When rain is wind driven. It goes into all sorts of openings. Not to mention wasps, dirt...As far as which company, I don't know. I use screened vents that are pre made. Buy them form sign supply shops.
