  1. Mark,I have a competitior who used to approach customers we both were bidding and tell them to let me quote and design the sign. He then told the customer to give him my sketch and quote and he would take 10% off in order to win their business (he would then tweek the design to make it "his"). I know it worked some of the time but it also backfired on him too. I talked to some of my buddies who work in other trades and it seems every industry has their weasels. It just seems to me we have more then our share in the sign business.

Good Lord. Just when you think you have heard the lowest you hear something like this. How do people like that sleep at night??

    Angie;

Just like the resident thieves in "The Hall of Shame" , they probably sleep very very well at night. A sad testimonial...........

But like Mark states, keep your dignity and honor no matter what the lowest of the lows do in our trade.

    Best

That is my main focus every day. If I have to cut the quality of my work, or go against my work ethic/values to get a job, I leave it alone and let the cut throat guy have it. It seems that over the past 25 years it has worked in our favor. The customer usually comes back embarrassed that they have to call us to fix the mess the other guy made - and the few hundred dollars he saved on the front end costs him way more in the end. Karma typically wins!!

Mark, I'm really sorry you didn't get better news. I was hoping somebody would at least help you make the a hole stop using your name.

  2. Had a Mexican rest. here in town that was actually rotating because the inner ring didn't get welded and the top ring broke loose. It was the local weather vein for a few days.

We had a Mellow Mushroom restaurant here that did the same thing less than a month after it was installed. Probably that $150 the other "sign company" in this area under bid us! It looks like folks would eventually learn that cheaper ain't always better. Especially when it comes to their sign that is going to represent their business. Drives me crazy.

  4. I sent them an email telling them what I thought. They sent back stating they see nothing wrong with what they are doing.

You go, Chubb!! At least they know that others think what they are doing is disgusting! I'm actually shocked they replied to you. Most of the time scum like that tends to like to hide behind a blog or a web site and not reply. It just amazes me they feel like what they are doing is okay. Boggles the mind how some people think!!

  5. I just looked through some of his "work" - Can I just say GOOD LORD! There are things on there that I would NEVER have done, much less put on my web site as "our work" to show off what we do. The directional sign is the worst, but not the only one. Maybe he should look through some of his SH@@ work posted on his own web site before he says something about yours! Haha ......

  6. That is the longest web site I have ever been on!! I'm like Paul, I almost went to sleep half way through. I finally just stopped reading. They must have made him change something because every time I put in your name all I get is your web site. Good for you!! It never ceases to amaze me what some folks will do if they think they can get away with. I'm glad you didn't let him get away with this one!! Pretty ballsy if you ask me!! It would be nice to know if he actually did take away any of your business by messing with your search engine results ......??? AND wonder how long it has been like that??

  7. How sad. Family owned, like me, or large corporation, some of these guys get careless (hard headed) sometimes. "It won't happen to me" mentality. They put the harness on and either don't, or "forget" to latch in. What the hell good is the thing if you aren't hooked to the bucket??? I raise hell all of the time around here and they get all pissed off when I do, but I have never, and won't ever if I can help it, have an accident on my watch!! Better pissed off than dead!! My sympathies to his family. Especially his son. I can't imagine how he is feeling today.

  8. Angie, not trying to open a can of worms but... You really need to research the LED's your going to use. If this sign has any intricate bends (you can only do with neon). This sign has a 100% chance of looking like crap. The LED flex in my opinion works OK for border, or possibly real large letters. I've worked with the Sloan before. You're not going to be able to do small letters, or intricate work, and pull it off. This is not due to your abilities. It's the limits of the product. I'd get your supply house's rep involved.

I would love to see some pics of the sign. Maybe it will work..

I am of the same opinion, but thought maybe you guys knew of a product that I just wasn't aware of yet. Hahaha ..... I learn a lot from you guys every day. I personally think the rope stuff looks cheesy ...... and the other stuff is too thick, I think, to come close to the look this guy is wanting. And he is the type that even though I tell him it is going to look like crap ahead of time, he will look at me at the end and want to know why it looks like crap. Hahaha ........ I am on a kind of damned if I do and damned if I don't kind of cliff.

  9. Why are you converting it? Hopefully NOT because of that wonderful energy savings or the 100k lifetime? What is stroke of letter? How deep? What color plex, vinyl, digital graphics? What color neon is currently being used?

Customer wants LED. We have kept him at bay for YEARS ...... Haha ...... but some of his buddies have convinced him, and we haven't been able to convince him other wise, that LED will save him TONS in electricity and service calls. It is a sign that is so old, the lettering on it is hand painted!! The letter strokes are about 12" or even less in some spots. And the dog is about 18" tall - possibly 24" ........ currently there is red, white and blue neon being used. The word restaurant at the bottom is likely even 8" tall

Angie ... With the various colors it sounds like you will need ... Take a look at Sloan's V-Series modules ....

    Kevin,

The link you put up doesn't work. Tells me the web address is unavailable ........ Is it on the Sloan website or a vendor's website? I so greatly appreciate all of your help.

  10. hand painted, old, and detailed. in my mind I am seeing an exposed neon job? If so, good luck. There are some products by Sloan and others - but they will never be even close.

You have a picture that you can share?

Yeah, it is all exposed neon ..... no, I don't have a photo. I am going back over there this morning and take some - I will be able to post some after that. This sign is REALLY old. We have tried to talk him into letting us build him a new sign with internal LED, but he won't give up the ghost of this sign. Apparently he is REALLY attached. We have to take the sign down to re-paint it and fix some spots that have rusted through. I think that's really the only reason he is wanting work done to it now, because a lot of the neon isn't working because it is taking on rain water in the rotted spots. We took it down about 15 years ago and did the paint/patch of what had rotted through at that time - We have tried to explain that he is spending way more money than he would on a new sign - You just can't convince some folks I guess.

  12. Good morning guys!

I have a neon sign I need to convert to LED that has VERY intricate designs on it (i.e. dog face, tail, etc.) What kind of LED product do you guys use to replace neon that would not be too bulky to make those intricate curves?? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

  13. Thanks guys for all of the responses! Sorry I haven't replied before now, but my daughter had a baby last Monday night so I have been out of the office taking care of her and my new grandson! Thanks for all of the help though. I really appreciate it a lot as always!

    Thanks

    Angie

  14. Does anybody know a company that carries the compact in line splice connectors for neon??

N Glantz doesn't have them, Grimco doesn't have them nor does Tubelite. Everybody I have called doesn't have any, and I need them like yesterday.

    Thanks!

    Angie

  15. Located in Santa Cruz CA? If so they are good folks, been around a long time. If another location I do not have any info to offer.

No, this group is out of Georgia ..... but I really appreciate your response! That's why I love SS - we all look out for each other!
