    Very sorry to hear about this. But more help is on the way - or probably already there. Our morning news reported that some of our Columbia Fire Fighters were sent to your area to help. Hopefully it will be under control very soon.

    PS...... the roads in South Carolina still suck

    We used to have some of the best roads in the country. "Smooth as glass" as my dad used to say when he visited from NY State every year. That was one of Strom Thurmond's pet things while he was in office: Keep the roads nice. Of course he probably knew who to call to get Federal money for maintenance. After all, we have no fewer than 5 Interstate highways going through this small, economically poor state. So they are a drain on other highway maintenance. In Strom's last couple of years in office it became evident that things were taking a turn for the worse. He knew he was not going to run for re-election, so he probably didn't care any more. Strom's replacement, Lindsay Graham, obviously doesn't care either. Yes, the roads have gotten bad and all they seem to do any more is throw some lose blacktop in the holes, which doesn't last long. If they bother doing any actual re-paving, it turns out terrible. There is one section of I-26 that I travel everyday that has been patched 3 times in the last 6 months. The first time it was so bad it was worse than the deteriorated road! Now it is drivable at least, but far from being smooth.

    Oh yeah, Hilton Head is NOT the place for signs. Seems I mentioned this a few weeks ago in some thread.

    Boy, all these folks saying they were going to go, meet up, party a bunch-------------good thing you only need Kgirl to liven up the action. Everyone else is poooooooping out on you.

    This topic came up some time ago, I believe on Krypton/Neon's BBS - but I could be mistaken about which site.

    It is my understanding that he did not die while "hanging a neon sign", but rather while he was on a service call working on a sign that someone else had made. As I recall, my source, who also knew Mark fairly well, indicated that Mark failed to turn off the power before beginning work on the sign. I do not personally know this to be fact. I am merely passing along what I recall being told to me by someone who I consider a reliable source and who knew Jamison.

    With that said, yes it is a tragedy for his family and friends - and the neon community. I did not know Mark well. I only spoke to him on the phone a few times. But as I understand it he was a pretty good neon person who took pride in his work and tried to do the best he could. We should all be so lucky to have a friend to go to such lengths to remember us.

    I agree: The LED 'reader' boards that have most, if not all of the modules lit at the same time are too bright at night or early morning (before sunrise, which is when I usually see them). Add to this too much copy crammed into an area that is not large enough and you end up with a big obtrusive spotlight with a message that cannot be easily read. However, that is not to say LED's are brighter than neon. If you lined up row after row of neon so it was almost touching each other and enough of it to cover the same area, the resulting light would be even brighter and more obtrusive.

    That is not my understanding of the situation.

    Many people who set up sites complain that they aren't getting enough traffic--and ALWAYS complain to the people who actually use the site. This is like complaining to the people who come into your restaurant that you aren't getting enough customers.

    Opening a site or a store is one thing--anyone can do it. Getting people to come to your site or store is something else and requires MORE energy to get people interested. Usually when people ask for an opinion as you do there's an incentive offered. You offer none but chastise people for not using your site as much as you would like. Every so often I go to opinion-gathering meetings--on new products, court cases etc., where participants are paid in cash--usually 2-3 hundred dollars for a couple of hours work--and they're usually enjoyable. This is what a personal opinion is worth to people experienced in motivating people. suggest you attend a seminar in how to drive people to your site--using a carrot rather than a stick.

    Some very good points also. And this one I could not agree with more. We know of some people with limited time in the industry (specifically neon from my vantage point) who refer to themselves as "journeymen" or "masters" who don't have a clue what they are doing or why they are doing it - other than for the paycheck at the end of the week or end of the job. But as Freddy eluded to, this mentality is not limited to just the neon sector of the sign business.

    I would love to respond at length (and many of you know I am capable of such), but I am under the gun to get a rush job done, so I will have to reserve a longer response for another time. But I will say that I agree with the general consensus that of all the message boards this is the best, which is one reason why I frequent it so much and will continue to do so.
