  1. It would be great to be able to compete on a basis of only dealing with companies that are of total high moralality people, companies that don't break any laws and use only the finest quality products no matter what the cost.

The bottom line is, I have to compete with other sign wholesalers. So I have to choose products that allow me to compete in the market, have confidense that my product will last and represent me well enough that the customer will return time and again to by more channel letters and other signs, and not have to prematurally service what they buy from me.

That's how I choose products. LED's especially. For me, neon is a pain in the ass. It's not the neons fault. With led's I can train a new employee to install and wire them in a short time. I don't have to worry about broken glass in installation and shipping, (that's a big one). I love neon as a light source. I think it looks great. But led's make my life less stressful. Like everything else in life, it's all about balance.

  2. I have more and more distributors calling to tell me they are now carrying JT's or JS leds. Last price I got was today. 4.50ft for white and 4.20 for red. I still have yet to use either. It is tempting though. I've used the same brand for 3 years and am hesitant to switch.

I don't worry about the first 6 months to a year. I worry about down the road.

  3. not to be a pain, do you have a manufacturere and model number I can find the manual online

No use as a crane. It had a hook that we used for a set of channel letters now and then. I always thought about welding up a small 12 or 24 volt winch but thinking was as far as it got.

I din't remenber the model no. It was a stright six diesel, turbo, automatic. All PTO with electric back up.

If show them one of the pics above, I'm sure they could help.

  4. First turbo charger was under warranty. Second one 6500.00. Automatic transmission went out just before warranty expired. Mechanic said it was 9000.00 without warranty. Router lub mister, 750.00.

So, I sold the trucks and do wholesale only now. Still have to worry about the router, welders, Accu-Bend ect...

Like Rosanna-Rosanna-Dana said "it just goes to show you, it's always sonthin". If you don't get that, you're too young.

  5. I don't see small shops loosing any sleep over it. Lets see, I can worry about Patent Infringement, or, I can go buy some beer and a bag of weed.

If you build for National companies and have a lot of stuff out there that pops up being involved in a suit, that may cause some lost sleep.

  6. I just read what was on the first page of this post in regard to the lighting. Is there more someplace. All I saw was:

"Hickok Cole Architects designed its 15,000-square-foot office space, with concepts based on neon and the flow of light it creates. Graphic films on glass-front offices helped to provide direction through the space.

Designers accented the curves of the central reception desk with LED lighting, making it visible from both ends of the long, barbell-shaped space".

It was also said by someone from ISA in this topic, LED lighting, neon, wall graphics, window graphics and signage are all showcased and used in this beautiful but simple space.

If there is more would someone point me in the right direction. If not, I don't see what the fuss is about over NEON -vs- LED.

Architects are just that, architects. Everyone I talk to anymore wants to "Go Green. Use LED's to save money, bla, bla, bla. I would like to know more, about the entire project, before I jump up and down and hold my breath.I'm sure someone from ISA had to tell them to integrate all these different types of signage and lighting.

Full disclosure: I am not a member of ISA. My only affiliation is The Sign Syndicate.

  7. You can look good without looking like an bunch of arrogant asses!

I'm not a memebr and could care less what they spend. I was just making a statement about how it works in this world, at least in this country. But, I was commenting on a picture, I did'nt see any arrogant asses to approve or dis-approve of. I didn't see that in the picture.

  8. I think, if they are representing an entire industry, they need to look good. When they have people in and want to get their attention on important matters to the sign industry, they need to look good. If they were in a strip center and had junk junk equipment, that would give the impression that they were not really doing very well at representing a large industry. We live in a world that "Impression Is Everything", like it or not.

  9. I don't see that being possible. I build a lot of channel letters and take great care and time finding the best pricing on materials. "STARBUCKS COFFEE" Thats 15 letters. Comes to $26.66 per letter on a raceway. I can't buy the materials for that - plex for faces, aluminum for the backs, trim cap, return metal, raceway material, led's or neon, transformer or power supply, switch, wire, screws and vinyl for the faces.

If someone is doing it for $400.00 I would like to go to their shop and take lessons!!
