  1. Hello - my friend who sells printers and printing equipment, etc is really pushing to his end-users the $250,000 small business write off purchase plan that is in place through the 2010 tax year. "IRS Section 179 which offers accelerated depreciation opportunities on equipment and software purchased in 2010. The updated 2010 Section 179 offers companies that spend less than $800,000 this year on qualified equipment to accelerate depreciation expense up to $250,000. Under Section 179, businesses that spend less than $800,000 in 2010 on qualified equipment may writeoff up to $250,000. The rules are designed for small companies, so the $250,000 deduction phases out when a business purchases more than $800,000 in one year. (Companies cannot write off more than their taxable income)." The wording refers to tangible goods like printers, computers, machinery, etc. It doesn't specifically refer to signage, but an on-premise permanent sign is a tangible good by definition. OK, my question is this - do you know of anyone who has decided to purchase a sign because of this limited time offer? Just wondering. Are ya'll using this as a sales pitch? Wouldn't you think that most small businesses are aware of this? I don't know. I have mentioned it to a few of my sign company customers, and they did not know. To be honest, I am not a fan of 'you have to spend money to save money...' Its the first part of that I can't seem to get over... Ok, but what if someone was teetering - on the brink of purchasing a new pylon or message center or building sign, etc.- you think this would push them over? I keep going back and forth in my pea-brain - yes the write off is a good idea/no its a bad idea. Thought I would see what you-all thought... thanks, Marion
