  1. March 2014 Results click LINK February 2014 Electric Sign Industry Neon & LED Test Comparison Results Below are the various categories of our test results made available for the electric sign industry. You can download the newest Sign Syndicate test comparison .pdf result sheet at the bottom of every Light Project Test entry with the most current date. Please remember....we have now made these light testing results available to you for free. If you feel like you have learned/gained something from these results or found that these results have saved you money by choosing one product over another please help support us in upgrading your free membership, or by purchasing various sign supplies we have available for you & your company. Many of our sign supply products are usually well below what you might pay for at one of the mainstream sign suppliers and some are bundles with free shipping. We've attached many various banners to the results in hope something may grab your eye. The Sign Syndicate does not engage in light source lamp sales such as LED's or Lamps so that we do not become a biased source for news & information and maintain that high standard of only dealing with the facts. For individual test result updates & information visit the Project Tutorials located here LINK As always, enjoy the results and hope you learn as we do going down this adventurous path! 2. ANNOUNCEMENT: The Testing for all our light projects will resume Starting this month next week. The last results were posted on this site last September. We have taken the November 2012 evaluations but never posted them. We have just finished with February's test results and will be posting those next week as well. We will be changing monthly reports to bi-monthly reports. I have started acquiring newer modules from various Board vendors as well as non-vendors to add to our projects. A new test we will be introducing right before ISA is "Blue Light Special". This will be a small test like The Red Light District with a few select vendors. Blue LEDs are a very hard find. Many manufacturers market they have a blue line but very few actually produce any you can find at a distributor or supplier so we will stick to those who have their products readily available sitting on a shelf. In doing our February test results we came across a failure of a light source mfg product that we have had in The Great White Hope for over 26,000 hours. Below is a video update of The Great White Hope
  3. The New December results are out! The Great White Hope - The High Powered white Neon & LED comparison (25,000+ Hours) - The coldest month in ambient temperatures. So what does that mean? It means neon takes a huge hit since last month, LEDs rose. Some long time products hardly to none at all with the lowest temp to date, curious to see if they finally hit that curve, will be interesting to see what happens in this next year Project Tighty Whitey - The Mid and Mini White LED only comparison (19,000+ Hours) - The coldest ambient temps to date for this project. Just about every single product rose with the temperatures, some stayed the same as last month, some are still degrading. The Red Light District - The Red Neon & LED comparison (13,000+ Hours) - With the coldest ambient temperatures for this project we see a rise in light output from all LED light sources, even a small rise from the Neon lamp which is a little odd since temperatures should not effect light output from gas lamp. Border Security - The Neon & LED Border Tube comparison (3,000+ Hours) - With the coldest month to date in ambient temperatures we are seeing a huge drop in light output from the neon sources. As you can imagine with no face covers to insulate compartment temperatures we get an even larger drop in light sources as it relates to neon in this test. What is odd interesting is hardly a rise in temps coming from the LED tubing sources, and that's likely because they are insulated to begin with. This month we started our RED section introducing Sloan LEDs StripeLED, and LEDNeon-Flex's pro line. This will be followed by neon source as well
  4. Been talking to a number of Sign Distributors and I have to shake my head when I hear of the big number of large national accounts that are usually bought and sold by the LED module manufacturers. We all know the usual suspect LED manufacturers that run around to these large corporate chains (banks, food & retails) who market direct to what used to be our clients, which circumvents us the Sign Manufacturers in testing and evaluating what should work best for OUR national sign accounts. I think it's been a HUGE, monstrous mistake on the part of the national retail, corporations, and banks to let a light source manufacturer sell them on one light source to fit all. It's throwing all your eggs into one basket "hoping" that light source holds up, and is a good return on investment over time, and of course compared to what else is in the market, even in different light sources. But what do they know? They get an expensive power point presentation along with an impressive dog and pony show, which isn't honest most of the time, it just favors what they're pimping. I've seen a lot of National accounts go bad around town, most of the time it's with poorly lit, but expensive light source LED modules, maybe it should have even been Neon as a light source instead. A lot of times, the specification is COMPLETELY wrong, and it's something that was over sold, a project sold on very bad information, and very bad MISLEADING information. These end clients who USED to be be fully ours, the food, retail and bank chains in choosing what components works best in our experience in case history . As a sign company who has decades, scores, maybe even the rare century of track record and experience who see's first hand and even knowingly is forced to purchase components we know not to be very good, or efficient is needed to complete large contracts in order to keep our business's going and growing. But, now the big question. What steps can be made to take/bring that specification process back to the professionals, and away from these large light source manufacturers who know better than us????? Nobody knows better than us, after all, we don't use one specific light source for everything we do, well if you're a true professional of the trade you don't. We've seen light sources prevail and widely fail. Similarly to the testing we do here on the Sign Syndicate in light testing a number of large sign companies do their measuring with them. I've see, and heard too many times knowing the results with the light products here the mismatching of products to application. As a sign company who comes across a large invitation to bid, what do you do when you see a specified component that you know isn't the right for the sign application? Maybe it's a inefficient product, too pricey vs quality, or you know it has a bad case history? What can we do as an industry to bring this decision, the R&D back to the sign companies and bypass the LED manufacturers who hype, mislead, who can at times mismanage our clients, or potential clients? What are you doing, or are you just nodding your head ignoring the potential mistake and submitting your bids? Would it help to bring the testing we do here in large high powered (Great White Hope), mid & mini (Project Tighty Whitey) light sources, Red Light District & Border Security in specialty light sources and even our future sign cabinet light source testing more to the forefront for even our end clients to see and monitor for themselves? Instead of keeping it so internal and within ourselves? That way they can see and witness what we do in measuring Neon, LEDs, and Fluorescent lamp technologies? Can this one aspect help and be a potential tool to point OUR clients to in aiding the sign program/specification process? What else can be done to take our industry back to shed a "good" light in the evening times? It won't be asked or addressed anywhere else unfortunately.
