  2. Whoops! No one hurt after crane tips over in Tiverton parking lot Kevin P. O'Connor Herald News Staff Reporter Posted Feb. 18, 2015 at 3:18 PM Updated Feb 18, 2015 at 3:23 PM TIVERTON — What went up came down with a crash, crushing a car in the process. The good news: No one was hurt when a crane from Dion Sign tipped over in the parking lot of the Dollar General, 567 Main Road. “They were working on a light at the top of a pole in the parking lot of Dollar General,” Fire Chief Robert Lloyd said. “They hired an aerial truck from Dion Signs out of Central Falls. “The driver raised the boom without properly deploying the jacks. The truck tipped over and crushed a car.” The truck operator, Albert Peixoto of Somerset, called police and then went into the store to summon the employee, Wendy Ferreira of Tiverton, whose car was destroyed, Police Officer Jay Dunlea said. “The employee was lucky in one way, she was just about to go on her break,” Dunlea said. Firefighters arrived and spread speedy dry absorbent to contain the fuel and hydraulic oil leaking from the truck. “We are still on the scene, waiting for a clean-up crew to pick up the fuel,” Lloyd said. “It is also being investigated by OSHA.” The driver was outside the truck, operating the crane from a control panel on the truck body, when the truck tipped. The truck was towed from the scene for an inspection by OSHA, Lloyd said. The store, which opened for business on Thursday, was able to stay open through the incident, police report.
  3. Man hurt by falling gas-station sign in Calabasas By Gregory J. Wilcox, Los Angeles Daily News A massive sign fell on a worker Friday at a Mobil station in Calabasas, seriously injuring his legs, officials said. The accident happened about 11 a.m. at the gas station near the Las Virgenes off-ramp at the 101 Freeway. Los Angeles County sheriff’s Lt. Jennifer Seetlo said she was told the sign weighed “in excess of 3,000 pounds.” Two workers were attending to the huge Mobil logo sign, which had been taken down temporarily. A photographer on scene said the wind kicked up, and it fell to the side, landing on the man’s legs. “He was conscious and asking for help,” L.A. County Fire Department inspector Keith Mora said. It took rescuers about 20 minutes to free the victim, and then they used portable hydraulic tools to lift the sign. The man suffered serious crushing injuries to his leg and was airlifted to a local trauma center, Mora said. Officials did not identify the victim or the hospital. The injured man was working for a sign company, said Sam Agaverdyan, the station’s owner. He could not provide any other details.
  4. http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/news/57072022-78/gillies-crane-sign-biehler.html.csp Utah sign company owner killed when crane malfunctions Man was replacing sign in Bountiful when equipment malfunctioned. By stephen hunt | The Salt Lake Tribune First Published Nov 01 2013 02:59 pm • Last Updated Nov 01 2013 10:37 pm The owner of a West Valley City sign company was killed Friday morning while working from a cherry picker crane in Bountiful. Richard Gillies, 66, of Gillies Signs & Design Inc., was replacing a sign at an out-of-business Blockbuster store near 500 South and 200 West at about 11:30 a.m. when the truck-mounted crane apparently malfunctioned, according to Assistant Bountiful Police Chief Ed Biehler. Gillies was in the bucket of the crane when the problem occurred, Biehler said. When Gillies’ son, a man in his 30s, attempted to maneuver the crane from below, there was an additional malfunction which pressed Gillies up against an overhanging facade and then flung him forward toward the building, Biehler said. Gilles was crushed against the building and fell from the bucket to the ground 10 to 15 feet below, Biehler said. Other workers inside the building, which is being turned into a fitness club, performed CPR on the victim until emergency personnel arrived. Gillies was flown to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Officials from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration were investigating the accident, and members of the state medical examiner’s office also were at the scene, Bielher said. According to his company website, Richard Gillies has been in the sign business for over 35 years. DONATIONS FOR GILLIES MEMORIAL DONATION FUND http://fundly.com/richard-gillies-memorial-donations
  5. Recently we had a thread about a little boy who lost his life from a sign falling on him, in the past we've had articles and topics about signs that have fallen, fallen and killed, injured, or electrocuted. At our Sign Syndicate Sign Meet in Vegas I had the pleasure of Meeting Dr. Dydra DeLyser, whom Wade Swormstedt brought with him for us to meet. If you don't know there is a link here about her. She compiling and in the middle of writing a book about the history of Neon. Anyhow, she mentioned and sent me an article that was in the Signs of the Times many moons ago about a sign that saved the life of an individual who was unbeknown of something that was about to kill him. Anyway, thought I'd post this for your entertainment and curiosity. Since we always here "Death by Sign", we can now say "Saved By Sign". On a side note, as we commonly repeat/coin the phrase, "They don't build them like they use to". I wonder if that would stand today, and if this life would have been saved today with the way some signs are cheapened out. Imagine If we can put one of the 11 seven liquor store signs made from Magic Mouth out of jacksonville who swears with his fuzzy math that he can save 80% in energy consumption over Neon to his clients to test in this situation, that would be a test of time for sure.
