Through my company I've offered neon bending and bucket truck sign repair services for some years, but I haven't had much experience with led-illuminated signs and displays. Since they have become so popular, I'd like to learn to repair them too, but I'm not sure where to start. Anybody have any advice for someone wanting to teach himself about led sign repair?

We haven't had to do much repair on someone else's LED signs, but right now we are servicing a "Supercuts" sign that we did not build and we know it's Sloans LED's and power sources, but we can not determine what generation they are and they built the sign! - called the company we are doing the work for and they do not know what generation they are either. With all of the different types of LEDS and different gernerations out there it is hard for a smaller company to keep it all in stock. we normally order product as we need it or have our customer send it to us.

It would help if you made clear one thing... are you talking about repairing sign / channel letters and/or border lighting that is lit with LEDs, or do you mean repairing LED message centers and scoreboards?

These are 2 very different things.

Exactly. I would say that repairing message centers is a very tedious and sometimes difficult task. I work in the office at my shop, but they have me go out and fix them because a lot of times it takes computer and mechanical skills to repair a unit.

Although, a representative from the message center's manufacturer will assist you over the phone for as long as it takes to fix.

I don't know if that helps you...

I should have specified message centers.

It is a lot like repairing Neon. There are different voltages 5V 12V 24V so your engine or power source has to be the same voltage like a transformer. Then the wattage has to be appropriate to run the number of LED lights you have just like the transformer has to match the length of neon your running.
