  1. Nice Truck! Is it under CDL, or does that matter to you?
  2. I've had multiple engineered drawings from hi-rise signs that showed no top inside ring, some as late as the late 90's. I think most of the engineers wised up and realized just because it worked on paper it didn't translate well to actual conditions signs go thru.
  3. Wow! That 150.00 they saved by not putting a top inside ring on that pipe just costs Sam 40 Grand.
  4. The operator was the mans son. I'm sure if he could turn back time he would be the first to alter what happened. So my heart goes out to the man. And like the family farm, which is still the most dangerous workplace in America, the family sign business can fall prey to the same conditions that can lead to accidents like this. Don't just learn from your mistakes. Be vigilant and learn from others.
  5. While I am against Government preferences, I couldn't blame someone for trying to use every advantage at there disposal. We all do for the most part. If I know someone in a position to help me get business or get new contacts; that what we all do. In the long run it boils down to your skills and abilities. I have found that it is easier to get business than it is to keep it. So these "leg up" programs probably do help someone get business, but people that thrive and grow have to perform just like everybody else to keep it. The only exception is Government, where bad performance can go on and on because it not based on results. I say that with the utmost of disdain. Dave
  6. Cool! All you gotta do is Act Naturally.
  7. It really sucks that your right about the stolen valor and how it has been co-opted by shameless posers, but there is a difference in making a general statement like "I was in the Army and fought in Vietnam and I won a purple heart". That just makes you a liar. But try saying "I'm John McCain and I spent 3 years in a Prison camp and I am raising funds for Veterans please click here to donate. To use a sign example Try saying on your website "Here are some examples of our work" and then you show a picture of the WYNN Hotel and casino signage in Las Vegas. You open your self up to liablity, Don't you agree? I know, extreme example but just keeping the conversation going till my lunch date shows up.
  8. It may be true that once a sign is up it is no longer your property and you have no control over who photographs it or uses it for watever purpose. But if someone puts a picture up and claims to be the one who made it, installed or designed it, and they did not, and, they are profiting from it, that is a different offense and they could be liable for damages.
  9. That is a nice looking truck and if your happy thats all that matters. But a cautious word concerning the auger. The stresses that an auger puts on a boom are much more than regular operation. It will shorten the life of any sign crane by half.
  10. That would be a excellent display to look at. As well as an independent display of vinyls after 10 years outside. Trimcap also, and inks as well. Now, what am I forgetting???
  11. I remember seing an old episode of "Twilight Zone", "Outer limits" or some such where a doctor who had become a drunk stumbled upon a surgery kit from the future. In it was a scalpal that would cut through tissue but would not cut a blood vessel. Thus allowing him to operate on tumors, etc. Why don't the goverment just mandate that the medical community come up with that one. Then we could really save some lives.
  12. Speaking as a musician & Signman, bands like the ambiance of neon when playing or practicing. They may have been just smart enough to fire up (no pun intended) some random tubing, but not smart enough to realize the potenial hazzard. If the building was a total loss and only valued at 16,000.00 it must have been a real dive. I have guitars that are worth more than that. Dave
  13. What is your final overall size going to be? You can buy poly in rolls up to 100" tall and 400 feet long? Is it going to be illuminated? If it is I think there will always be, upon close scrutiny, a visible seam. Dave Thanks for you quick response... These are 10' tall, internally LED illuminated channel letters with many of them over 100" wide, so seams are required in some places. The white poly has 1st surface vinyl. We would like the seams to be as imperceptible as possible. We are gluing the seams now with a clear backup and getting a 'smudged' result when illuminated. Would appreciate any better ideas. Thanks, Sean Press your pieces tightly together that you want to glue, making a "butt seam". then use clear tape on both sides. Once they are taped together take a razor blade and cut the tape on the seam, seperate the pieces enough to use some of the resin based glues made for lexan. push tightly together. Once dry you can peel the clear pieces of tape off both surfaces giving you as clean of a seam as you can get. The tape should prevent any bleeding of the glue onto the face side. vinyl on top of that should help even more. If it is located close to an edge or maybe a serif that should help minimize the strain on the seam as it still will be the weak spot. Good Luck with it, Dave

  15. I agree with your assessment of attendance, it seemed as though the exihibitors literally outnumbered the attendees. i went with my 2 oldest sons this year who are involved in the business and gave them the tip whem your on the floor if your dressed up your selling, if your casual your buying. not always true but close enough. I was most shocked at the pitiful attendance to hear Gen. McCrystal. I wanted to open the windows (there were no windows of course)and shout down at everyone to get up here. and you would think that ISA would know what to expect and not put 300 (at the most) people in a room that would hold 1500. it made it look all the worse. Appreciated what he said and of course were able to get really close to him. Best speaker I've heard there since Terry Bradshaw back in 89? Dave
  16. Along with restoring old neon signs lets don't forget the art of using blockout paint. It's the icing on the cake for good neon work. Shot at 1:19 in the video looks sad because of it.
  17. That is an incredible amount of mercury your friend accumulated. That would be about 115lbs. per gallon x 100 gal. I've heard of people experimenting with it in golf clubs. They hollow out the driver then fill it with mercury leaving room for it to move so when the club hits the ball the mercury keeps moving to give the swing that much more velocity. For me that would mean I would have to go even farther into the woods to find my ball.
  18. If you ever see yourself getting into Chicago some weekend, or whenever, call me. We'll get together and have a long chat about mercury - . gn Will do, It's always a good weekend getaway. Especially when it involves the "friendly confines". Dave
  19. I use to play with the mercury in my dads neon shop when I was young. I should be dead by now if all they claim is true. I do believe however, it has caused me to gain weight over the last several years and not the beer & fast food they claim. I believe you can also add the myth of Asbestos to that also. It was and still is the best fire retardant. It's removal also single handedly devastated the ecomomy of Kazakhstan, if anyone cares. Don't get me started on DDT Just my opinion, I could be wrong!
