Credit to the original poster. I got this from another forum I visit and thought it might be enjoyed here, maybe even helpful. I'm usually pretty good at brain teasers and riddles, but didn't get this one. Hint - look for the simple.

You have 3 light switches in the basement. Each switch controls a separate, single incandescent fixture in the attic. Your mission, Mr. Phelps, if you choose to accept it, is to label the switches to match their corresponding fixtures. You can use no tools or equipment of any kind. You're allowed no help. You're allowed only one round trip from the basement to the attic and back to the basement. There are no windows in the basement or attic 3 floors above. It must be done on a sunny day at high noon.

Turn two on, leave one off, go to attic and short out on of the lights that is on. Back downstairs you know wich light is which because the light you left off is off, the light you left on is on, and the the breaker has been tripped for the third.

I only figured this out due to the many times I've been shocked messing with live wires.

Is there nudity involved in the adult version?

Unfortunately, I forgot to mention that all 3 fixtures are on the same circuit. After all, they're only 100 watt lamps and they're all in the attic. It's actually a given that they'd all be on the same circuit. Nice try, though.

I can't believe the number of PM's I've received concerning this brain teaser. Hundreds, if not 1's. Out of all the answers I received privately, he was wrong too. So I've decided that rather than everybody wasting their time, wracking their brains trying to figure this one out, it's time to give the answer.

Mark the switches A, B, and C. Turn A and B on. Wait 5 minutes. Turn B off. Go to the attic. The light that's on is A. The light that's off and cold is C. That light that's off and warm is B.

Please, please. No applause. After all, I didn't get it either.

Damn that was qucik

You turn 2 switches "on" and leave 1 switch "off" and wait about a minute. Then enter the room, but just before you enter, turn one switch from "on" to "off". Once in the room, feel the lightbulb - if it is warm, but off, it has to be the last switch you turned off. If it is on, it has to be the switch left on. If it is cold and is off, it has to be the switch you left in the off position.
