Miracle Theatre boasts new neon-lit marquee

A towering, neon-lit marquee now stands sentinel on Southeast Stark and Sixth Avenue, lighting up the otherwise drab warehouse surroundings, and advertising — in two languages — the Miracle Theatre (or, as its eastward face reads, "Teatro Milagro"), which has occupied the site since 1995.

The marquee replaces the 14-year-old vinyl-painted plywood sign that formerly hung over the entrance to the theater.

"This marks a new chapter in our history," says Jose Gonzalez, executive artistic director and co-founder of the Miracle Theatre Group, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. "We wanted to do something significant to commemorate our silver anniversary," he says. "We wanted to create a landmark in the Southeast."

The marquee is part of a series of improvements to the theater that also includes interior renovations (new carpet, lighting, paint, air conditioning and the addition of art rotated by local Latino artists in conjunction with Alberta Street's Onda Art Gallery) and some exterior work (new paint, six new trees along the sidewalk, and a bike rack to come).

"The marquee is like the cherry on top of the cake," Gonzalez says.

"The marquee," marketing director Tim Krause says, "solidifies our presence in the community and demonstrates our permanence here. It's already helping people find us."

Funded in part by the Spirit Mountain Community Fund and the Collins Foundation, the marquee was created by the Vancouver Sign Co. and went up Feb. 5. Associate theater director Antonio Sonera photographed the step-by-step installation process and uploaded a slideshow to the tune of Culture Club's '80s hit "It's a Miracle," to YouTube (go online and search for "Miracle marquee").

A ceremonial lighting party has been scheduled for March 12 to celebrate the new marquee and to thank donors and supporters.
