Kohl's, one of the largest retailers in the US, is going green. Kohl's chose Federal Heath Sign to manufacture and install a new prototype LED letterset sign for its Anchorage location, the first store to open in Alaska. The LEDs use less energy and have the added feature of not dimming in cold weather.

Dallas/Fort Worth, TX (PRWEB) April 9, 2009 -- Kohl's, one of the largest retailers in the US, is going green in Alaska. The specialty department store chain chose Federal Heath Sign Company to manufacture and install a new prototype LED letterset sign for its Anchorage location, the first Kohl's in Alaska.

In keeping with their 'green scene' initiatives, Kohl's chose LEDs to light the signs. The LEDs have proven reduced energy consumption, with the added feature of not dimming in cold weather. Another consideration was the LEDs ease of service and maintenance (vs. neon), especially important in this area of the country, said Federal Heath's Sales Executive Bill Schwalbach.

To meet Kohl's deadline, Federal Heath used both truck and boat transportation to deliver the new sign on time and within budget, according to Schwalbach. The Anchorage LED sign is the new prototype approved by Kohl's for all future locations.

Sounds like they're basically using LED instead of neon for channel letters... the words "prototype LED letterset" is probably just the writer's way of saying they're doing something new.

In places like Alaska there are HUGE benefits to going with LED. They burn brighter when it's cold and will last longer, whereas the opposite is true for neon. Go to Edmonton or something and you almost never see neon other than clear red - it looks like hell for half the year.

I am amazed that they are still in business with the crap that comes out of their doors! Anyone know what LED manufacturer they use? It was Sloan or Super Vision for awhile I thought.

It was Sloan from what I've "heard", aren't they the ones that had that problem with a high rise Hilton or Marriot Hotel in the LA area. They had to take out all the Sloan mods?

We use LEDs for 90% of the channel letters that we make. We haven't had much of a problem in about a years worth of fabricating. We usually switch between using Sloan and JS LED depending on the application. Sloan has been very reliable and we have no complaints. It doesn't seem like such a good idea however to use a "prototype" for such a far away install and for Kohl's only store in the area. They are going to be watching that sign like a hawk I am sure.
