quick LED sign repair question

Hello All,

Here's a quick question about the repair of LED channel letter signs. Can I successfully replace one manufacturer's power supply with a different brand of power supply as long as both units have the same labeled output voltage and output wattage? Do these power supplies self-regulate so that one labeled as a 90 watt can be go in place of a failed power supply labeled 60 watts, (assuming the rated voltages of the two units match?)

Thanks,

Tom

If the failed power supply is rated 12VDC x 60W, then any other suppliers 12VDC supply should work just fine. 60W is the Class 2 maximum for 12VDC, so it's probably better to replace a 60W with a 60W, but it's possible it failed because it was over-loaded and your idea of using a 90W is not a bad one - just as long as the wiring you use can handle the amperage and no one will be inspecting to see if it's Class 2 or not, because at 90W it won't be.

Knowing the power consumption of the LED modules would be helpful, but as long as you stick to 12VDC with at least as many rated watts total, you'll be OK.

Good question, glad you asked that. after so many years making neon and fluorescent signs adapt to what it takes to keep them burning (safely), I am still worried about what will and will not work with the LED's. After all these years of "standard" operating procedures, I need to learn this new technology. Thanks for all the answers you guys put out here for us.
