The small important steps in power disconnection

This was a electrician and not a sign company (not that that matters) but the importance of overlooking the disconnection of power is paramount in sign removal. I see this a lot where janitors, electricians, general contractors and even sign companies remove electrical wall signs but still leave the transformers or powers supplies still hooked up. WHY?!?!?!?

It just turns electricity into heat because it has no where to go.

Disconnect the source, remove it and cap it off. Either in the tranny box itself or at the j-box that precedes the power supply source in the circuit.

Well, it bit someone in the ass as soon as it was fired up.....and someone had a very bad day!

Hey I have a good one for you on this subject. We were called to a fast food restaurant do do some work after a fire, yep fire. We looked up in the attic and sure enough there was a neon tranny still wired up with the sign gone long ago. The tranny is what started the fire. Here is the interesting part. I guess before we were called they had called in a local electrician and he had determined that yes the tranny had caused the fire and promptly ordered a new one! They wanted us to install it! Needless to say I didn't install the new tranny for a non-existent sign. I laughed until I was sore.

We've seen this happen twice... one was a restaurant where the neon work had been done by an unlicensed contractor (we would'nt touch it and called the landlord to let them know it was hazardous. However, the restaurant owner energized the circuit and a fire was born. Second one - contractors removed a sign, and stuffed the leads for the tranny back into the attic without even an attempt at capping them. That one was caught quickly so the damage was minimal.
