  1. "you get what you pay for", commented the software consultant at LegalZoom So my wife and I downloaded a new application called LVPushyPully and realized you could have an amazing night with this new mobile app no matter where you are in Las Vegas. The best features of "PushyPully" are are appreciated at valet of MGM. There was a lady using "PushyPully" to an extreme the other night in 6" heels and a 1" dress....and her bottle of oxygen she was carting behind. Amazing how this program allows you to do things that are just not right. And as the ad says for the software "what was, is, and should go up...will, can, and must come down" It is a free app - but I am sure there are social add on connection modules to connect you with software Erik talks about above.
  2. Lance, contact Doug McGhee from Blair - he lives in Birmingham - he will get the word on what you have to a lot of companies that would want what you have
  3. I started my professional lighting career by being involved with the acquisition of a CCFL driver company. That technology is what made me a lot of $$$$ If CCFL is so dangerous why did/do the US Airforce or leading medical companies use it as the light source in life threatening applications??? It last forever, is safe, performs incredible, and is very efficient. I use to be VP of Business Development for Microsemi Nasdaq MSCC - Wall Street loved that we were the leader in extreme applications for CCFL. So I said it - I started my career on CCFL - I never forget or lose respect for it either. People should take steps forward in life by fully appreciating their past and history. Will make you all laugh - we are working on huge application/opportunity for high voltage LED system!!! Met with UL yesterday to confirm the concept was not too crazy - I was told - "go ahead - looks fine"!!!
  4. Nichia put this odd announcement out - most White LEDs use these type of phosphors to render true white colors. Having been very involved in lawsuits in the past - I just get a feeling that they are not messing around and are going to start pursuing quite a few people/companies - my guess is they will go after the "knock off" Chinese and Korean brands, See the press release: http://www.nichia.co.jp/en/about_nichia/2010/2010_060701.html And looks like they cleared the air about Seoul Semiconductor claiming they are a licensee of Nichia: http://www.nichia.co.jp/en/about_nichia/2010/2010_040901.html
  5. Oh come on - GE and Philips are going to have $30.00 LED light bulbs you are going to be forced to buy in 2 years because incandescent is going to be outlawed.... I think it is so funny. And dont get me started on GE and politics - what about CREE and politics - much bigger joke. Hell even the California Energy Commission's lab the California Lighting Technology Center (CLTC) is bordering on corrupt. This university will evaluate your products and tell the world how great they are if you give them $20,000!!!! Great state school and great tax funded program - only $20,000 I am packing up cases of incandescent bulbs and will sell them for $2.00 vs $1.00 - great mark up!!! I figure I could resell enough to smart people and get enough side cash to pay CLTC $20,000 for a mention. Dont get me wrong - saving power is a great goal but it can be done with neon, CCFL, flourescent and....yes, LEDs. But come on - GE charges a ridiculous amount for their products! Their 60 Watt power supply is almost 2X the price of ours - now that just doesnt make sense....oh I forgot, they need the extra cash to fund political campaigns!!! So I will leak it here - Axiom NZ and AoTuroaLED will be introducing a product that is 2X and 10X brighter and much lower cost... our goal is to make $ and cents make sense!
  6. Dark Skies is about saving turtles - ask about amber lighting with the scientist involved and they will tell you it is about not affecting gazing at stars Even with Luxor hotel in Las Vegas night skies are great
  7. Some places around the world do not invent - they merely knock off and copy Someone once told me that the only thing you really own is your sanity and your ideas. Even though it can be quite entertaining to live in your head and play with the thoughts and ideas - that is just not very healthy So I say to those that invent - tell the world what you did and then invent something else so that they are focused on what you did yesterday and not how you are planning for tomorrow At Light Fair Nichia introduced an LED that is 10x brighter than anything on the market. They own a lot of patents but keep on pushing forward with actualizing some brilliant ideas.
  8. You are right - cooler is always better - we have a saying in electronics that there is only one thing in life that operates better the hotter it gets!!! haha
  9. Axiom NZ is the light behind this massive new sign. No fluorescent and no neon. See the news story: http://www.wcsh6.com...0x240-bandm.jpg http://www.wcsh6.com...FTOKEN=91529925
  10. Surface you mount to and color it is painted make a world of difference Steel dissipates 60watts/mk Aluminum dissipates 180watt/mk Copper dissipates 380 watts/mk Graphite dissipates 1200 in one direction and 10 in the other I will respond to Erik and Marko comments in extreme detail tomorrow - discussed with Erik - easier to talk out the science than to write it all down Marko is right - the Nichia Led we use at Axiom is unusual. The part that Nichia just introduced at Light Fair is even more unusual - 10x brighter and runs almost 20x better in dissipating heat - so light output at higher temps does not change as much
  11. 45C is hot??? Come for a weekend in late July to Las Vegas! Damn Marko - you are now truly a Canadian...its official!!! 62C is "you will pull your hand away hot" And yes everyone - Marko and I are competitors but we subscribe to the philosophy that there is more to learn from each other. And yes, at Axiom we are friendly with several competitors - hell, my brother and nephew work at one competitor! Marko - if you are in Las Vegas this week give me a call and we will take you to a Kiwi adventure in Las Vegas - we will freeze your ass off! Lets meet up at the wine event at Nichia LED booth on Thursday night if you are here.
  12. We have all been told - or you have been told by myself personally in years gone by that you must put a heatsink on an LED and run it cool. Well, coming from the person who has written a few patents pertaining to LED lighting and heatsinks and being involved with a lot of lawsuits for people that were infringing on patents that invented using heatsinks with LEDs. But - as much as I would like to think I would look good in a leisure suit - maybe bell bottoms - well...times have changed. In several recent discussions I have had with customers, competitors, and suppliers I think it is not widely known that LED times have changed as well. You use to have to be very careful on how hot an LED ran because you could quickly kill the part. But as with all great technologies things improve. I remember Dane Cardone, the CEO of AoTuroaLED in the USA, telling me that he used to sell mobile phones that fit in a suitcase in the trunk of his car...well I am glad people like Steve Jobs helped us reinvent technology over and over again. Or some of the new BMWs or Mercedes - how long before a tune up or oil change these days. So - without further delay I have put together a graphic that outlines how White LED efficiencies and operating temperatures have changed over time. This graphic shows that Lumen Per Watt or "Efficacy" has improved dramatically...but at the same time so has the temperature at which LEDs can operate. So if you have a Nichia or CREE based LED systems in your hand and it is getting hot - you are most likely ok. The human body runs at 37Celsius and nowadays you can have an LED chip that ran can run at 120-130Celsius... the human being reacts to hot as above 62 Celsius. Here is a graphic for conversation...times change...but was has not changed is that UL still says that you cannot have a light touching drywall or anything flammable that goes above 90 Celsius...they are being safe!!!
  13. My uncle was a US airforce pilot - never heard him tell stories. He looked like and talked like John Wayne. He was 90. He died on Saturday.
  14. I think border tubing should be done in neon, don't like LED border tubing Nothing more to comment
  15. Stephanie was reading this book HOT FLAT AND CROWDED http://www.amazon.com/Hot-Flat-Crowded-Revolution-CanRenew/dp/B002J85BFA/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1273511447&sr=1-3 It outlines why the drive for reduction in power - actually pretty scary...but...what is really cool is how the author uses it as way to show that America can use it as a catalyst to revitalize the innovative talent within our country. I think what you are doing Garrett with CCFL is an iconic example of this - you know my feeling on CCFL and wish the home market would come back to appreciate what you and I were developing. The main drive for Federal changes has to do with the amount of power being used and planned to be used. Here is a great report I read regularly - shows you what is happening: http://www.eia.doe.gov/cneaf/electricity/epm/epm_sum.html
  16. The Return on Investment calculation is based on LEDs, Drivers, and estimated cost for retrofitting the fixture (labor cost). We are finding that the applications that have the best return on investment are applications where the light is on 18 or more hours a day. Hospitals, colleges, and manufacturing facilities seem to be the best applications so far. Best ROI results are in CA, Hawaii, and Alaska...but some favorable results in MN, PA, and NY due to rebates and tax deductions that are available. The primary reason people are retrofitting are; 1. Reduce energy (keep in mind that Calif energy rates are as high as $0.21 kwh) 2. Reduce maintenance (extreme staff cuts have put higher workload on staff maintenance - we hear a lot of complaints. 3. and then...whether we like it or not...the "green factor" I will ask Al Dixon and Nate/Shooter to chime in...would probably be best to hear their stories.
  17. And don't you think that we are laughing at ourselves by wearing green wigs? My favorite color is Orange. Do you think we should start a fluffy ad campaign "about doing the right thing so you can see more of the orange sun"??? You are right - LED companies need some new words... I like when we make our customers profitable - that is the green (in the USA) that matters Trying to figure out what colors we can refer to in countries with multi-colored currency!!!
  18. And one more item - we don't advertise in magazines. My understanding is that she learned about AoTuroaLED from another sign company and from a website called The Sign Syndicate - anyone heard of that website as a source for references???
  19. I will make one comment regardingthe article in Sign Design thy Erik commented on - Mardeen has a friend who is retrofitting all the fluorescent fixtures at one of the largest names in the industry because the customer experienced that the AoTuroaLED retrofit kits saved 60% of the power, increased light output by 30% and will pay for themselves in 1 year. Could be up to 10,000 fixtures. Another public hospital just announced they are spending $3mil to retrofit their lights and will recoup the investment in 12 months + they get state and federal tax write offs. And lastly - I think her source on technical safety points was UL- perhaps the most knowledgeable man in the industry.
  20. Famous photographer we know www.Altf.com does photo shoots in the neon graveyard all the time Neon is a timeless art
  21. If anyone is going or interested in being an AoTuroa dealer - stop and see the parts retrofitting all kinds of fluorescent fixtures
  22. Wow - just learned that there is no easy way to tell the difference between magnetic and electronic ballast - best way is by weight - is that true?
  23. We lost a lot of business when ImagePoint went under. We were one of their largest LED suppliers. We lost a bunch of business to people who have switched to low cost knock off or what appear to be patent infringing LED systems We picked up a lot of business in foreign car and fashion names as well as hospital related business And as a result of Rugby World Cup in New Zealand in 2011 we have seen a lot of new work Biggest loss for us was in automotive dealerships - US car dealerships came to a halt
  24. No Brian they are not. Not to get into any religious discussions but some of the books would look rather odd with the characters in them with green hair. I have told people to buy boxes of incandescent bulbs - they will be worth a lot of money some day. And for a bit of education ....does anyone else find it interesting that the material Gallium which is found in almost all LEDs is sometimes found in the flutes of Coal power plants? So the ultra "green" technology is coming from Coal Power plants....I think that is funny and actually a little bit of truth that makes the marketing hype just a little amusing...and is why we put on the green wigs. We believe that what is most important is making more green (money) and having less lawsuit exposure (using a patent infringing LED technology). Here is some info on Gallium - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gallium
