Why I say NOT China for LED's and other products

Recommended Posts

"NOT MADE IN CHINA!!"

I would like to share a document with you I was recently given, somethings are debatable in some issues but a good chunk should be payed attention too.

The LED DelusionV2.pdf

Sometimes I get people asking me why I say "NOT made in CHINA!!!" on a lot of our advertising when it comes to products we distribute on the Sign Syndicate like our infamous NC LED's.

The answer has always been simple.

China manipulates their currency which provides a disadvantage when it comes to trade, it's unfair, unequal trade. American companies who have gone to Chinese plants for production for decades...think "Engineered In America, Made In China" philosophy has always resulted in playing musical chairs because unless you have an engineer, someone you can trust to watch these plants and observe or conduct your own quality control on a daily basis, more often than not things get changed up to cut costs. More often than not, that enforcer for quality control most likely will only show up quarterly or yearly.

Standards

Socialism versus Capitalism, who do you think has a higher incentive to do better?

Human rights, there is no such thing when it comes to China and how can there be under a dictatorship.

Chinese government/industrial hackers of our computer systems

It's clear until we greatly deregulate our own country so we can bring back jobs and production in our very own country, until that happens which will be hopefully soon we should be careful about who we buy from when we can as much as possible.

When it comes to our own electric sign industry, things maybe cheaper to buy Chinese BUT the quality is almost never there unless you have VERY tight quality control and when it comes to LED's from our own tests we have been running since 2008, we haven't seen it.

As that saying goes, "buy the best, and only cry once"

Standards

Socialism versus Capitalism, who do you think has a higher incentive to do better?

I agree with most of the China-vs-West ideas, but I think China in a business sense is more capitalistic than the US and other rich Western countries. A dear friend of mine runs a business in Hong Kong. As as business you can pretty much do what you want there. Copyrights, environmental regulations, truth in advertising, etc. are not strictly enforced. Money dictates the rules. The government is of course very anti-democratic - but I think business there is much more slanted toward pure capitalism than many other places.

Capitalism does provide incentive to work harder and do better... but "do better" means what? In a pure sense it means to make more money for yourself. Period. You can be very financially successful and create mass-misery, poison people, and destroy the environment at the same time. There is no incentive in pure capitalism to create jobs. On the contrary, a job is a liability and cost to be eliminated.

Think of countries with products most consider well made: South Korea, Japan, Switzerland, Germany, Sweden, France. All are considerably more socialist than China, Vietnam, Indonesia, Pakistan, etc, which all crank out cheap products.

Agree there are few is any standards coming out of China. But standards mean regulation. Even if voluntary, someone has to confirm and/or track compliance?

I don't mean to sound unpatriotic, but I think this county's problem is we let big monopolies exist and don't foster enough competition. And it's getting much worse. We have a punishing copyright and patent system that rewards the status quo with ever increasing winfalls. What's a copyright now... something like 60 years after the author's death??? Drug patents renewed when you change a word in the prescribing instructions? We allow pharmaceutical companies to buy up competitors and shut them down. We have the crappiest, slowest, most expensive internet service of any rich country, and we are still approving mergers of the 4 companies that control 80% of the market?

And lastly lets not forget banking.... which used to be here to provide working capital to businesses. Now they exist completely to enrich themselves and aren't even required to to operate in the best interest of their clients. Wtf?

(off my soapbox now and back to work. I swear there was a point in here somewhere about LED's....)

I can agree with most of that.

So rings true they can do whatever they want, and so we do not operate on a level playing field when it comes to trade, let alone operations.

People will always start and run a business to make money for themselves, to turn a profit....usually the reason being they prefer to not work under someone. The incentive is, if you have an idea, where would you rather be, here or China? We're too over regulated and you're right, some other countries do have more freedom and less restriction but the drawback is the individual liberty and right to prosper is NOT there. But shame on us for letting it get this way.

Standards are also set by the individual, or the company not necessary the government or in forms of regulation. Most set their own standards to build better products, services and performance to separate themselves from their competition and probably the reason why we get innovation set from personal standards and not ones set from government . As it relates to China and LED's well, we've all seen the companies that come here, advertise a here now gone tomorrow so much for the 80,000 hr warranty on cheap grade chips. Warranties offered for 50,000 hours, 5 years from a actual diode manufacture who only offers 3....false advertising.

Most started with a great idea, acted on it and started a business. The purpose of a business is not to create jobs but to turn a profit, however an awesome byproduct of a business are jobs. Companies will thrive and grow with great employees.

On monopolies, the interesting part about the collaboration of various large companies usually occurs when the people let government get bigger, more regulation, and so starts the overreach. In reaction, large companies bind together and merge to become larger to protect themselves and their way of doing business. This generally does not happen with smaller government and low regulation, it's easier to operate and compete

But funny point on companies buying others to shut them down or have those products permanently shelved, we've seen plenty of that in this industry alone.....I suppose I could mention names. But just think about what you enjoyed using that you do not have anymore, lol

All in all, we still live in the best country this world has ever seen, AND a country that has only been around a little over 200 years, no other country values individual/personal rights, liberties & freedoms. Others can try and copy, but "freedom" is never enough WITHOUT responsibility and virtue. Without those qualities it becomes a soggy mushy mess......and why America is exceptional, and why others flock to the idea of "Freedom"

My Sunday thoughts.... :crazy_pilot:

Regarding sign products from China, the issues we have always seen is quality control. Every company says they have "best quality" but in reality they have zero quality control. Every product you order has problems, and every one is different from the last making them incompatible.

Chinese companies will change what you order without telling you and just expect you to be okay with it.

Their warranties are worthless, as you can't ship any "used" products in to their country, so it's impossible to take advantage of their warranties.

There's a tremendous time delay when dealing with China. You ask a question, they respond the next day (usually not even answering your question but instead asking you something that you've already answered in a previous email). If you have a liaison that speaks the dialect and can be a middle-man that is great if your middle-man knows the product and problems and can ask the right questions. Otherwise, every time you want to talk to them you have to set up a midnight meeting and pay your middle-man to translate for you.

It's really hard to provide a quality product if you're ordering it from China, and it's near impossible to do it in a timely manner and keep your customer from being furious at you!

It is the truth that the quality control in China is a problem . Some plants may sell their poor quality led sign and mislead them their customer , tell them the sign as same quality as sign manufactured in US , I think this  should be blamed .  but some others Chinese suppliers tell the customer the true market position their products should be at.( for example , our products are aimed at middle - high end market. Then US customer can adjust accordingly when selling the sign to end user or resellers. for example , buying more spare parts( modules, control card, receiving card , flat cable , sensor ) if sign shows problem , they can send out the parts immediately for replacement , then his customer send back those bad modules or other cards, then , he can send back those back parts together to Chinese supplier . and target customer should be those customers who want to have a led sign but can not afford a sign like Daktronics or Watchfire.  In this way , I believe the US buyer can gain more customers  and more profit .

So, we finally did it.  It's been kicked around for months, prototypes, after prototypes and locked in on a configuration that we finally liked.

As most of you know the Sign Syndicate we've been testing majority of the main stream LED's since 2008 in a unbiased benchmark comparison, tests such as "The Great White Hope....Project Tighty Whitey...Red Light District...Border Security & Blue Light Special".  Over that time we've seen some characteristics that we liked, made sense, understood what will last and won't.  What it means to be a High-End LED product.

We have sold the NC LED's & Axioms for a few years now, as some of our favorites from the testing (Axioms no longer).  But it's been time to do our own, make it more custom and more perfect for the Sign Industry.  The Brighton line is made from those in the Sign Industry.....FOR the Sign Industry.

It's BrightON, pronounced just like the city.

So what so unique about the Brighton?  For starters, we wanted it to be VERY efficient.  I don't know of another more bright and efficient LED module in it's class.  155 lum/W and 124lum with a 170˙ Batwing optic lens, most importantly when it comes the sign industry the important number is 63.09 Foot Candles on a sign face per Watt

The important aspects of long lasting LEDs is of course finding the "sweet spot", where it's driven just perfect for light and power.  The Brighton is VERY under driven, less power, MORE light!  These can be spaced out pretty far due to the optics lens, it's brighter in angles than it is straight on, or up.  Under driving  improves thermal performance, which extends life all while getting higher Lumens per watt.  The Brighton LED is a High-End, High Performance LED module for High-End applications.

For starters off the bat we will have a 2 Diode, (no need for a 3 Diode), 4 Diode, and our Sign Cabinet model 6 Diode (SunFire).  Shops won't need to stock multiple module types, the Brighton-2 is so versatile, you can use it for almost anything, just adjust the spacing.  It already comes with 7" inches of wire so jumping from one row to another is easy.  Space the center to center at 6" for good light, 5" center for Better Light, 4" for Best Light.  They're 1.7 mods/foot and work good for shallow 2" applications depending on face type to of course much deeper.

Since these are driven so low, they don't generate a whole lot of heat, BUT, our Brighton-6 (2.8w) is Heatsinked on all Aluminum PCB for longer life.

One of the biggest complaints we have received about LEDs when it comes to large projects like large letters or cabinets is......"We have to use so MANY Power Supplies!"

A nice aspect about the Brighton is, it's a whole 24v system!  Everything!

As sign companies we are redistricted by the Class II regulation of no larger than 5A per channel.  So 12v is restricted to 60watts, BUT....24v is restricted to 96watts.  24v will mean more modules per power supply.  You're now getting almost double the amount of modules for a project.

24V cuts that amperage that runs across the wiring and module in half!  It reduces the resistance, reduces the heat and most importantly IMPROVES reliability.

I think we can all agree that LESS is BETTER, less moving parts, the less you have to worry.

This is the first part of our Brighton Line, we'll continue to improve it widening the line and of course always always staying far ahead of the curve

I'm including some rough test pics of our process and how they fair.  We should have these available in the first part of Fall.

And yes, we will still stock, and continue to sell NC LED Reckless LED

Early Try Out's, various wattage and diode mfg's

      So...

I haven't posted any jobs lately and I need to play catch up.

So I'll start with our latest projects and work myself backwards

As we've discussed so many times on the Sign Syndicate.  There is a time to retrofit, and a time not too.  Neon and Fluorescent lamps/systems should not in most cases be retrofitted to LEDs unless accessibility calls for it.  Otherwise, it doesn't make financial sense for the consumer to do so, or....just so a shop can make a project sale on BS energy efficiency numbers and mythical saving $$$$

So here are some retrofit jobs that make REAL sense.

      NEON RETROFIT

Here's a chain of Studio's that I've been doing since the early 2000's.

This particular sign is only partially mine, everything from the Logo and red letters.

This was the first job I did for them leading up to fabricating all new signs for their locations.  The white is from the previous location and Neon has been in it's original form since the late 90's, and it's 6500K Snow White.  The logo is 15mm Tri-phosphor, Elite 65D I believe.  The Logo and Red was done in 2008.  It's very hard to tell because red and white is hard to capture and a cell phone cam does no justice but the White lettering is dimmer than illustrated and is about 50% of it's original light output.

Not bad for 20+ plus year old lamps!!

So the owner called up and wanted a revamp.  Had I been the average shop you bet the immediate response would have been LED!  SAVINGS!!!!!  BULLSHIT!  BULLSHIT!

      Well, no.

We're logical over here in SoCal, a land where 50¢ modules would have replaced the Lamp Art.

The logical choice, and more economical choice for the consumer?

Going from a single halo phosphate 6500K Snow White Neon lamp to a Tri-Phosphor EGL Designer 7100 Series Lamps.

When we moved and installed (2008) this sign we did so with Tecnolux Silicone GTO and Caps.  All that was needed for this retrofit was new lamps, and leaving the awesome silicone GTO and transformers in place!

Now, I owe you a night shot, the iphone pic I took was garbage, so I'll update that soon.  But the Logo and White letters match up well, and even with the old faces, the sign illuminates like a new sign at night.

Forgot to mention, the white faces are also from the 90's and they've held up quite well, the Trim Cap is Plasco, also held up quite well for 20+ years old.  During the day, the ace look good, so no need to replace.

      LED RETROFIT

      So a new client...

They called, they were moving and wanted to know if they needed a new sign or whether to fabricate a whole new on because the current was lit up like crap.   Had hot spots, dim a places, and just crazy outages in sections of letters.

It would have been better had I taken night pics, BUT...I didn't know I would be posting and writing about it here so

Had this been some other shop, I'm sure the nightmare would have continued

Yes, two different LED manufacturers in the same sign Woohoo, the electric sign industry in it's finest form right here!  It made me SO proud!

If you're familiar with Gaverieli Plastics, I need say no more, let alone Chinese JS LED's....well, their both China and their both crap.
They don't last, they fail, they cause companies problems with having to go back and replace and most importantly...They cost the consumer, YOUR client.

The second sign which they had, made at a different time and by another company was US LED, also garbage.  Illumination was just as bad.  Sorry, didn't get pics of that sign because again, it wasn't my plan to make a post here

If this wonderful, thoughtful sign package doesn't make you cry, I don't know what will.

The original plastic was green vinyl over white acrylic and in such a short time this sign was beat, and probably why they called a new contractor for the work for their sign move.

Well, a new sign made no sense.

They were just moving a few suites over and they weren't going to get a larger sign so the original would do.  New faces with 3M Lime Green over White acrylic.

The most important aspect of this Sign....

      Yes!

NC Reckless-3 LEDs.  Top Tier Samsung Diodes running on a Constant Current system...NOT Constant Voltage.  1.2 watt modules.  Most important detail about our NC Reckless LEDs?  Their made in Korea NOT CHINA!!!

      Beautiful!

Check out that crazy light meter reading!  That's almost 300 surface Foot Candles, which is about the equivalent light output to a 13mm Tri-phosphor white Neon Lamp behind white acrylic.

If that is not simply utterly gross and disgusting, and you're not just sickened by that number, you have no stomach

These Reckless-3 LEDs will NOT be powered up by their low budget power supplies but rather our Union LED Power Supplies made in KOREA, not CHINA!!!

It's usually best to retrofit out with what was already in a sign, and not change one light source to another.  It's makes more financial sense in MOST cases, not all, but most.

NC LED Get's Better and Better $69.99!

Introducing the NEW NC LED "White Horse" Wide Angle Constant Current Series.

The White Horse CC series is a diffused lens LED module to better spread the light for shallow electric sign applications like 2" push thru architectural cabinets and channel letters available in 2, 3, and 4 chip diode configurations.

The module is the same as the NC Reckless series discussed here
      http://www.thesignsyndicate.com/forums/index.php?/topic/7353-bright-long-lasting-channel-letters-and-what-it-takes/

      • IP68
      • 5 Year 50,000 Hour Warranty
      • 160˙ Wide Angle Diffused Lens
      • Constant Current, NOT Constant Voltage
      • High Brightness LED Module
      • Made in Korea NOT made in CHINA!!!
      • ONLY $69.99 per 100 WH2 Modules 42' Linear Feet

NC LED DOWNLOADABLE SPEC SHEETS: NC-SS-0416-Brochure.pdf

This White Horse series is a 160˙ degree light disbursement LED module and is the same chip for brightness as our Reckless series but because of the diffused lens the light is spread better for even lighting for shallow based sign faces for channel letters, dimensional letters or cabinets.

As you know diffused wide angle modules won't be as effective for standard channel letter illumination as the Reckless series but great for shallow depth channel letters BUT, with the sick brightness of the NC Reckless LED series you can probably use this for both applications.

Two great modules with the same makeup mixed with high Korean standards, with these standards think high, over engineered Japanese standards.... lastly..........say it with me.......NOT made in CHINA!!!

      Okay so....

      WOW!

      I'm quite impressed....

So I'd like to introduce our newest addition to our family.  The NC White Horse Nano!

These lil suckers are BRIGHT as hell.  Their about .4 watts each, True White high quality tier/grade 6500K Samsung Diodes.

Their approx 5 mini modules per foot, they come in 100 module strings and you get about 25' per string....and as you can see, 3 diodes per module, and just like it's bigger brother "The White Horse" their 160˙ wide angle modules.

But, because their so small, these only come in constant voltage NOT constant current.  The upside is, these are lower wattage modules.

So many possibilities with these high quality modules that are small, yet pack a BIG punch of light...DAMN!

The good news is, their only $82.99 per string of 25'......The bad news is, there was a miscommunication and they only sent us 20 bags, but more are on the way.

      P.S.- NOT made in CHINA!!!

NC LED 's are generally pretty small anyway, especially the Reckless-2, but as a visual the White Horse Mini is significantly smaller!!!

With Great Channel Letter Benders like the SDS/AdamsTech Machines out there creating some small 8" to 5" Letters, below are a few LED moduldes for visual layout purposes.  Tot he far Left we have our NC White Horse Nano, and NC Reckless-2 to the right of it.  The Reckless-2 can work as well but imagine if this letter just just a little bit smaller.  Visualize the other components needed for in conjunction with the poly-carbonate backs.  The tab support for the aluminum pan letters, the peg stand-offs and well as the secondary wiring hole.

Larger modules don't make sense for these small tight letters.  With the White Horse Nano's, having that extra room to move modules around makes more sense along with more even lighting than using long or larger modules.  With the White Horse Mini's you won't struggle with letter assembly.

      The Brightness?

Everything you would expect from our NC Reckless & White Horse LED Line

You can purchase these from our online shopping cart

    • Most Light Source Suppliers and Manufacturers won't show you examples let alone "numbers" of light readings on Sign Cabinet or Sign Projects from light source components they push like these I'm posting here, but....This is The Sign Syndicate!   "Seeing is believing" as they say.   So, one of the components I've been big on because of feedback and demand is a strong enough LED module that doesn't cost an arm and a leg, isn't proprietary where you need to buy their special clips, brackets, etc, and actually put out enough light without exaggerated "Usable Light" under too far spread spacing that's supposed to save you money that won't compete with other existing signs in the area of your project.    Biggest complaint from sign shops about cabinet LEDs....."I don't want to use a whole bunch of power supplies!"   You want your clients sign to stand out, NOT be lost or drown out by other neighboring signs also competing for attention and visibility.   Most importantly, the BrightON Sunfire LED keeps it simple by allowing custom sign shops not having to pay enormous amounts of money.   I've discussed our upcoming new High-End Sign Syndicate BrightON Sunfire LED for Cabinets, Slim Cabinets, and Large Channel Letters before.  But I've never had an opportunity to back it up with facts by illustration until now.   Let's start with our industry long time standard light source components first.    That is good ol HO T12 Fluorescent Lamps.    Unlike our industry suppliers and manufacturers I'm not going to bash the use of HO Lamps, they work good, and they do last a long time despite their marketing claims of failure just to sell another light source.  There are some very well High-End made HO Lamps for our industry.   Back to the project.   Here we have your typical 4' x 4' x 12" double sided cabinet that we would either see on a pole or mounted on the ground.    3/16" 7328 Plexiglas MC acrylic face.  Using industry standard spacing of lamps at 12" spacing.        HO Lamps 6" in from the sides and 12" from lamp to lamp powered by a energy efficient electronic ballast pulling about 126 Watts         With four HO 4' lamps with 12" spacing we have a average Foot Candle average right on the sign face of 156.5 FC    This is, and has been our industry average for sign surface lighting for DECADES.         Here is our High-End Sign Syndicate BrightON Sunfire  (pronounced just like the city)     A 3 watt LED module with a 170˙ High Uniformity Optics with over 420 lm   Most importantly it's 24V system, and Constant Current.... NOT Constant Voltage.    This system has reduced amperage, heat, and resistance running across it compared to a 12V and it has more voltage head room for long runs.  This calculates to longer life.  On a 24V system this means loading more modules on a 96W power supply than a limited 60w power supply of a 12V system.  Less moving parts on a project the better.     Below and as illustrated we spaced our modules the same as HO Fluorescent Lamps.  6" in, 12" from row to row and one Sunfire Module per foot, spaced 12" apart from one another   One thing I wanted on our Sunfire modules were longer wires between each module.  You have enough wire (15") to jump from row to row without having to splice...less labor involved and it gives you more room to do what other tasks you may need to do with longer wiring.   Using modules like our BrightON Sunfire makes your projects at so much of a lesser cost.  Instead of buying special proprietary clips, tracks and mounting brackets just purchase inexpensive alum 1/16" or 1/8" angles and channel for mounting.  These typically can be bought in 8', 16', and 24' lengths.        The results.....196.5 Foot Candle average on the sign face surface, a 26% brighter face       What makes the BrightON Sunfire even better?   Adding a True Power France Lighting Solution 24V LED Power Supply.  True Power means having the ability to load 100% of a load on a power supply.  As you know most power supplies are asked to load to 80%-85%.  Not so with France, 100% if need be.       Most competing cabinet 12V/24V LED modules will run you anywhere from $7.00 to $15.00 per module.    The BrightON Sunfire will only run you $3.75 per module, giving you NOT "Usable Light" but "Real Competitive Light" as illustrated here.....26% brighter, over above our industry standard lighting of T12 HO Fluorescent Lamps!!
    • Our 24V France "True Power" Lighting Solution products that will power our Sign Syndicate Brighton LEDs have finally arrived and are now listed up in our Online Shopping Cart.   You'll be able to power up 118 .8watt BrightON II LED Modules on a single 96W France LED Power Supply for all your channel letter and sign cabinet  projects!!!    That means cost savings in using less LED Power Supplies in using a 24V system over a 12V system.    A 24V System also reduces the Amperage, Heat, & Resistance running across your LED Modules over a 12V system   Two HUGE pluses for your projects, High-End, High Efficiency Constant Current 24V BrightON LEDs powered by True Power France Lighting Solutions Engines.
    • Large outdoor LED display is a high-tech engineering product integrating multi-disciplinary technologies such as electronics, power, computer, communication, information, image processing, optics, materials and structure. The relevant engineering and technical problems in any of these subject areas will affect the final operation of the entire display. A perfect LED display must be an organic combination of multidisciplinary technologies. Led display dot matrix module driver is generally completed by a constant current driver chip. The chip includes a serial shift register, serial-to-parallel conversion and constant current driving and other functional circuit components as shown in Figure 1. The constant current chip is a conversion device that converts the luminance signal of the controller into an appropriate driving current for driving the LED to emit light. The quality factor of the constant current of the constant current device will affect the effective brightness of the Exhibition LED Display Shenzhen. Especially when the refresh rate of the display screen and the number of display gray levels are higher, the constant current chip will more significantly affect the brightness of the entire display screen. As shown in Figure 1, the supply voltage V-LED of the display will also be one of the important factors affecting the brightness, especially when the voltage is lower than the normal on-voltage of the LED, the LED illumination effect is affected, thus affecting the whole The brightness of the display. In summary, in order to solve the brightness problem in the display application, we can take practical measures including: using high-brightness chips, high light-receiving rate to select Indoor rental LED Screen, and designing pre-sufficient while ensuring white balance brightness requirements. Appropriate pixel point combination design to ensure reasonable pixel viewing angle, increase the visual contrast of the display through reasonable arrangement and structure design of the lamp; select high-quality constant current driving chip for reasonable driving current And voltage design to ensure efficient driving of LEDs.   Of course, ensuring efficient LED driving requires strong R&D and technical strength. The LED video wall display china industry has grown rapidly in recent years, and has also grown up with a number of excellent display applications and display light source packaging companies, such as display light source packaging. Enterprise--Bai Shi, after years of development and growth, now has its own display R&D lab, dedicated to the research of LED display technology, and a large number of LED display application technologies in the United Nations key research institutes. research work.
