Well as stated before in a previous thread.....It's OPEN HOUSE!!! In short the test results are available to everyone in the sign industry. All you have to do is register for free if you have not already done so.

The reason for this, I want a bigger participation. I think this industry needs it VERY bad because of all the industry myths and misinformation about light sources. Education seems to be lacking in this department and a lot of shops depend on the word of the manufacturer rep or a sign supplier rep.

The only thing we ask is, if you like what you see and if it helps you make better buying decisions for your sign applications that you build then you can support us and the tests we do by either upgrading your free membership to a Board Patron which has it's additional benefits or by purchasing electrical sign supplies that we sell here on The Sign Syndicate as you'll see in the test result sheets! :sml (26):

Project Description

This is a Comparison and test of both Red Neon & LED light sources for large channel letters.

The power source for all 12 volt LED light sources will be powered by a manual adjustable Axiom LED power supply, all other power needs will be dedicated.

1) Did KGirl mode for those silhouettes?

2) I'd be happy to send product, but 6 slots is very limited. What if it fills up and none of the "mainstream" suppliers are represented?

Then I'll build more, probably as individual channels like Project B (Which I'm renaming once it begins, stay tune for that name :P ), or use less of the cab as white. We'll play it by as it comes

But right now I'm giving priority to Board Vendors first.

I'm buying GE's Red however, unless they want to participate this round and shoot me a sample? GE?

*UPDATED 6/3/09

Red%20Light%20District2.jpg

This is our sites next Tutorial for Board Patron's & Board Vendros

I'm dividing up the GWH cabinet 2 and making 6 slots of those for this new project on large red channel lettering. The footage will be the same as neon, double stroke and 6 feet. 4" on centers.

The acrylic faces we will be using will be either 2283 or 4515

Tests conducted will be the same as The Great White Hope.

I only have 6 slots available, one is neon, so that leaves 5 compartments for LED's, I will also need a power source from you as well.

Anyone interested please email me at admin@thesignsyndicate.com or PM me.

VENDORS (6 Slots)

  • Elite Lamp
  • Ventex
  • GE
  • YYZ

I'll do it in 12mm lead-free. Pure neon fill with 1 microcurie Krypton-85. WAY more efficient than plain-old neon, BTW.

I get that Garrett makes exceptionally good neon... but for "comparison purposes", shouldn't it be every day red neon that 99% of sign shops wold use in a set of channel letters? That would be the most industry valuable benchmark, no?

I think I'm changing the overall specs. I think I'm going to make these as channels with a length of 2' x 4"/5" channels instead of using part of the GWH cabinet since we have so many different manufacturers to work with & evaluate

Thought I sent Red LuxemBright a long time ago.

Are you full up at this point?

Can you be a little more definitive on the module size so I know whether to send Standard, Economy or Mini?

Thanks,

LOL, I just realized it's going to be almost a year when I intended to put this project out, OUCH!

I'm just about done, all the channels are built I'm just trying to configure a way to adapt to the carousal of projects.

I just realized I need more of your red LED products, I seem to have a lot of non-applicable modules. I need high powered red. YYZ I need your red for big channels I only have he small one LED stuff, Axiom I think yours is old and out of date, and probably out dated US LED, Agilight

I have CAO, Ventex, a CCFL, AA.

    • I didn't take the job.   And before I did anything for a company like them, I'd have to set up an ach block.   Otherwise, per my banker, it's possible that they can do a reverse ACH.   My bankers has been after me to set that up, though there is a monthly fee.   sigh, there's a monthly fee to just about anything with banks.   Paul, keeping busy i hope?    Rocco
    • Take the Money 1st. ACH the money. Then do the job.  *** Credit Cards can be cancelled up to 18 months ***
    • Wow, you will have to root through "their" protections.
    • A national sign company that I've dealt with for at least twenty-five years wants us to sign their vendor packet again this year.   At first it was a few pages but grew over time.   Last year it was fifteen pages.   Now it's twenty-two pages., plus a three page NDA.   I will have someone look it over and give me their opinion but it's getting ridiculous.    Their paperwork pusher will say that its' all "standard things" but standard for who and in whose favor?   Even if they gave me a ton of work, and it's only been one or two jobs a year recently, I'd be hesitant.   if i didn't know someone that does contacts for a living, I'd have to pay an attorney to go over this packet.    This is a national that has a good rep but it's getting to the point that we all need an attorney on hand at all times to go over paperwork.    Rant over.
    • This is the late April 2026 Update   This month we added in: GE's TX GEN4 12v .9w 6500K LED Module     G2G's WOW II Red 12V .72W     Also Including the GWH IV Snap Shot of the Project which is also included in the April Evaluation PDF Sheet.   The most important thing to take notice i2 the FC / Watt (Foot Candles per Watt).    This is the LED Chip Quality and Efficiency, this is the amount of Light Per Power.  The bigger the number the more efficient that Light Source is.  You might see a Higher Wattage LED Module with a low FC/Watt value, that means it's not too efficient....could even be pushed and in some cases over driven running hot, which can result in shorter life.   I'm going to drop an example to put things in perspective. Let's take two 2LED Modules...the Brighton - II, and the EveryLite Rebel LED Module.   The Brighton II is .8 watts, the EveryLite Rebel is almost a 1 watt Module at .96w   The 362 Foot Candle average EveryLiteRebel is brighter than the B-II Module at 348.5 FC AVG.  However the B-II Module has a 108.91 Foot Candle Per Watt Average.    So if we were to boost the Module Power of the Brighton - II and make it say, a .84w module instead of a .8w module then we can project the Brighton II Module with Foot Candle per Watt of 108.91 to have a Foot Candle Average of 365.93.   The .84w Brighton - II Module would be brighter, under driven, and more efficient than the .96w EveryLite Rebel.   Now the Flip Side...   If we made the .96w EveryLite Module to a .8w Module apples to apples to the Brighton - II Module, we can project the Foot Candle of the .8watt EveryLite Module would be 301.66 instead of the 362 FC Average.  You can see the Handicap here   So Boosting the power of so-so chips will give you more light for the "Wow" factor, but in some case is over driving, there is more heat involved....and like all electronics...they hate and fail with heat.  This is why a lot of LED MFG's recently make a 2 LED almost 1 watt Module and sell for $40 a bag....   Just something to take note of.....          On another Note, I will be taking down the TBA Vendor as the light is too low, and the Principal / Sloan Prism Module as it is dated   April's 2026 GWH IV Sheet GreatWhiteHope IV 042826 WOA.pdf
