Mervyn's to close all stores

this is going to be tough for companies that made a sign business out of doing their signs.

Hayward-based retailer Mervyn's will close its stores after the December holidays, according to the San Francisco Chronicle and other media outlets.

The retail chain had filed for bankruptcy protection in July and announced plans to close 26 stores. Now, its other 149 stores will be closed, too.

Mervyn's will bring in an outside liquidator to sell its remain stock, according to the website marketwatch.

The 59-year-old company has 175 stores in seven states, including one on Showers Drive in Mountain View.

"We are disappointed with this outcome but the company's declining liquidity position and the extremely challenging retail environment, together with the fact that we have exhausted all other possibilities, requires that we take this action," John Goodman, Mervyn's chief executive officer, said in a statement.

Of course, you could look at it as a great opportunity to build new signs. With construction of new retail centers at a standstill due to the economy, existing space will be coveted, especially given some of Mervyn's choice locations. At 100,000 sq. ft., Mervyn's is a dinosaur when it comes to modern retailing. They'll probably carve up the space to accommodate 3 or 4 "big box" tenants for whom we can build new signs.

Ahhh,

It is a shame the company is going out of business. They have so many competitors out there! But, I try to look at a bad situation and make some good of it...

I CAN GO SHOPPING...... ALL THOSE DISCOUNTS!!! AND MORE DISCOUNTS, THE SALES ARE CALLING MY NAME!!!!

O' MY GOSH, I CANNOT STAND IT!!! :)

Oh yeah......(Erik), I need some money so that I can go shopping with your mother, sister and my mom this Sunday!!!!! Mervyns is closing their door and they asked me to come by and help clean the store out. They said that I should bring your truck to fill up.

Yeah,

I am so sadden by this.....such a shame....

Sorry Manuel, I could not help myself....

Hell, I love any store that goes under...there must be something wrong with me? I buy shit I do not even need! I see a discount or sale and I am so there with my shopping buddy (my mom).

Love ya......

Umm,do you know of any other stores going under???? Just kidding...oh,actually I am not, the holidays are around the corner and who does not love sales during the holidays????

lets see - there are a few more banks going under...a few casinos in Las Vegas having horrible problems...and a lot of smaller businesses like dry cleaners, etc going under.

And if I was you and Erik I would make an illuminated "FIRE SALE" or "GOING OUT OF BUSINESS" sale sign that people can hang on their buildings and draw crowds...possibly rent the sign...but get paid in advance.

I worked for Mervyns in Lancaster, CA in the late 70's. They used to have really nice quality clothes, but over the last 10-15 years, the quality had gotten very shoddy. With Kmart and wallmart selling the same stuff for lots less, why would Mervyns be surprised they didn't make it? The Mervyns in my local mall in Silverdale, WA was replaced by a Kohls.

And Linens 'N things is going out of business too. Aren't they owned by the same parent company?

I bet we start seeing some smaller "quality" brand stores that arent too much more money...it would be nice to see some quality again.
