sign faces impact modified acrylic or polycarbonate

Recommended Posts

What does everyone use the most of for sign faces? Impact modified acrylic or polycarbonate? We have used polycarbonate almost exclusively for the last 5 years, but we are getting our butt kicked on price right now. Just curious what everyone else is using. What do you get average per square foot price?

What is the application for? Cabinet signs, channel letters?

If for cabinets, I prefer impact modified because acrylic carry the UV properties into the plastic, where as poly-carb have a coating. Poly-carb yellows faster than acrylic. For channel letters I try to stay with regular cast or extruded, depending overall size.

Just beware of the cheap imports, make your customer aware of them as well.

One thing about pricing, plastic pricing can change faster than any other component used in the sign industry and it seems to go with the oil industry. I remember when gas was almost $5 a gallon PVC was way up there for me. Not sure if there is truth behind it or just some aspects of the industry trying to take advantage of the situation.
