Neon In Print.

Recommended Posts

Since I have been in the trade I have looked to the trade magazines to help me learn whats going on in the industry.

I just finished reading Signing OFF by Chris Ytuarte in the back if SBI. The article ask the question " Between museums, auctions, and novelty tours, is neon now just a part of history." After making a 1 paragraph point about what carbon - 14 dating is, he brings it home." Which brings me to my point: Neon is the new Carbon - 14."

I would expect more from the associate editor of this magazine than to preface the article about neons past translating into a healthy future on page 4 and saying it is no longer a indicator of comerce, as much as it is an indicator of nearly forgotten times and era's. on page 84.

I have had my own neon shop since 2002 & have enjoyed growth every year. I just kills me to see how the money that drives these publications can also try to dry out a particular nitch.

This is a trade that requires skill & commitment & a need to be self motivated something I guess you don't need to screw a LED into a letter. :wave-finger:

:rofl6ma: Angry I guess huh?

lol, I got a kick out of , and this is the back or last page. I haven't had a chance to sit down and read the article yet but I'm guessing it's the same article along the same lines, "Is the notion of Neon Antiquated One?"

But now if it's history and an antique, antiques are expensive right?

Guess we can raise prices now for it! :big_boss:

Which month?

We do not have it here so we called Chris and asked him to fax it to us. He said we wont get the August edition for another week or so. He was kinda hesitant to send it. Can someone who has it fax it to me.

1-908-508-1122 Attn: Sean

Thanks in advance

Just got it faxed over. quality reading time.

I read it but have to a few more times to absorb it. My first opinion was, well ya know what I thought. Read it again and it seems that neon has stood the test of time and is still going. I would like to read the other mentioned authors though.

GOOD things happen for a reason......

It seems to me too that neon has stood the test of time. It is the tone put forth that it is a thing of the past. Neon is relevant in the sign industry today. I agree that neons past is nastalgic. But their is a future.

3 Restaurant chains just opened here in the last 4 months all having exposed neon pole signs & building neon. I know that Chris did not mention LED's in his article but if you google his name he has lent many praises to LED's. It just makes me think that you can only build your product up so much. Now you have to make neon look like a thing of the past. I guess I'm just tired of hearing neon sucks/ LED's great.

The editorial was poorly written at best. In this case perception is everything. And people's perception varies widely without question. But my perception (and I believe the intent of the message) is that it is an attempt to make people think neon should no longer be considered for up-scale projects because it is not new or the latest technology. My perception is also that the magazine is attempting to give the neon industry poor grades while still giving the industry coverage - all in an effort to appease the high dollar LED advertisers.
