The award-winning PBS special of how a young Virginia playwright comes to terms with his best friends death will make its off-Broadway debut. The one man show is called the "The Neon Man and Me." Slash Coleman plays over thirty characters in the spiritual rock n' roll comedy about best friends.

RICHMOND VA (PRWEB) April 7, 2007 -- Richmond playwright and performer, Slash Coleman, will present the New York premiere of his comedy, "The Neon Man and Me," off-Broadway at Teatro la Tea Theater in New York City on April 10th and April 22nd at 8:00pm. The one-man-show is a tribute to the life of his late best friend Mark Jamison, a neon artist from Roanoke, VA who was electrocuted two years ago as he was hanging a neon sign. A portion of all ticket sales will benefit the Jamison family.

A 2006 recipient of Style Weekly's, Top 40 under 40, award and a Groucho award winner for best one man show of 2005, the production is scheduled to appear on PBS later this year. So far, Coleman has used the production to raise $20,000 for non-profit organizations. In recent months, funded in part by the Virginia Commission for the Arts, the show has grown to include a documentary film entitled, "Glow," and a high school curriculum entitled, "Healing Communities: Helping Students come to Terms with Bereavement, Tragedy and Loss."

"I'd like to think that my show is a care package to my friend's son and family," Coleman says, "but it has helped me and countless others in our search for peace after love one's have died."

The off-Broadway debut will take place on Tuesday, April 10 and Sunday, April 22 at 8:00 pm. Teatro La Tea Theater is located at 107 Suffolk Street Suite 200 New York, NY 10002. Tickets are $15 and may be purchased by calling 212-529-1948 or logging onto www.smarttix.com. More information about Slash Coleman and "The Neon Man and Me" is available on-line at www.slashcoleman.com.

This topic came up some time ago, I believe on Krypton/Neon's BBS - but I could be mistaken about which site.

It is my understanding that he did not die while "hanging a neon sign", but rather while he was on a service call working on a sign that someone else had made. As I recall, my source, who also knew Mark fairly well, indicated that Mark failed to turn off the power before beginning work on the sign. I do not personally know this to be fact. I am merely passing along what I recall being told to me by someone who I consider a reliable source and who knew Jamison.

With that said, yes it is a tragedy for his family and friends - and the neon community. I did not know Mark well. I only spoke to him on the phone a few times. But as I understand it he was a pretty good neon person who took pride in his work and tried to do the best he could. We should all be so lucky to have a friend to go to such lengths to remember us.

    • It depends on what's under the EIFS.   If it's plywood under the foam, then toggles are fine for a lightweight sign.  If masonry, we've come to like the titen HD (simpson strong tie brand) anchors or long wedge anchors.   The Titen HD screws are more user friendly than tapcons IMO.   They come in a variety of sizes, sometimes even at the big home centers.   Just check to see if it's densglass (fiberglass wall panels) under the foam.  Engineeners have told us that densglass isn't "structural" and that things need to be thru-bolted with uni-strut (or equal) sleepers across studs inside the wall.  A few years back, we were called out for an emergency call where someone had installed some large raceway channel letter signs to an EIFS wall that had densglass behind.  They used lag screws.  These held for a while but a heavy snow caused them to fail.   And toggles should work with Densglass but again not for any heavy loads.    In any case don't compress the foam too much.  A sleeve (mentioned above) would be needed for whatever the depth of the foam might be, though probably not needed for something light like an ACM panel.   if it's a really small sign, then appropriate exterior screws are usually OK going into plywood.

    • Hi   Can anyone tell me the right color red and blue translucent vinyl for the "new" Pepsi logo?  We have a local ice cream spot that recently changed from Coke to Pepsi and we have to replace the graphics on a couple of lit cabinets.   The customer sent me the logo in various formats but it didn't specify the correct colors.   I've searched but keep getting CYMK, etc. for the older logo - 2022 or so.   Thanks!
