Auto Club Speedway President Gillian Zucker Illuminates Marquee on the 10 Freeway

by Joann Young

SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY, Calif. -- Auto Club Speedway president Gillian Zucker illuminated the Speedway’s freeway marquee today on the 10 Freeway, featuring a full color 20’ by 40’ LED display. The marquee fronts the north side of the I-10 Freeway just east of Etiwanda Boulevard. Originally unveiled in February 2008, and recently updated with a new design, the marquee is used to advertise events and businesses at Auto Club Speedway.

Zucker rose 120 feet into the air in a bucket truck to light the sign, which highlights information about the Speedway’s upcoming Labor Day race weekend, August 28-31, including the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Pepsi 500 on Sunday, August 31.

“We have gotten great feedback on the marquee from our fans and from local businesses who advertise with us,” Zucker said. “For fans it’s a great reminder of the events happening at the Speedway. And our business partners tell us that aligning with the Speedway’s brand is a great selling point with their customers.”

The marquee features one of the newest versions of LED technology, two large 20’ high x 40’ long full-color screens that display different messages on each side of the sign. The sign also features two large, 12’ high x 20’ independent sponsor panels on each side of the sign that will advertise business activities at or near Auto Club Speedway.

The sign required 747,000 lbs. of concrete to secure its base and 1,950 square feet of advertising space. The sign is located on property owned by Watson Land Company at 13055 South Valley Blvd.

Electra-Media, Inc. (EMI), of Lawndale, California programs the messages on the marquee’s LED screens and maintains the sign. Young Electric Sign Company (YESCO), of Ontario, California, manufactured and installed the original sign, and manufactured the LED screens.

    • It depends on what's under the EIFS.   If it's plywood under the foam, then toggles are fine for a lightweight sign.  If masonry, we've come to like the titen HD (simpson strong tie brand) anchors or long wedge anchors.   The Titen HD screws are more user friendly than tapcons IMO.   They come in a variety of sizes, sometimes even at the big home centers.   Just check to see if it's densglass (fiberglass wall panels) under the foam.  Engineeners have told us that densglass isn't "structural" and that things need to be thru-bolted with uni-strut (or equal) sleepers across studs inside the wall.  A few years back, we were called out for an emergency call where someone had installed some large raceway channel letter signs to an EIFS wall that had densglass behind.  They used lag screws.  These held for a while but a heavy snow caused them to fail.   And toggles should work with Densglass but again not for any heavy loads.    In any case don't compress the foam too much.  A sleeve (mentioned above) would be needed for whatever the depth of the foam might be, though probably not needed for something light like an ACM panel.   if it's a really small sign, then appropriate exterior screws are usually OK going into plywood.

    • Hi   Can anyone tell me the right color red and blue translucent vinyl for the "new" Pepsi logo?  We have a local ice cream spot that recently changed from Coke to Pepsi and we have to replace the graphics on a couple of lit cabinets.   The customer sent me the logo in various formats but it didn't specify the correct colors.   I've searched but keep getting CYMK, etc. for the older logo - 2022 or so.   Thanks!
