Fire Damages Citgo Sign

citgo1.jpg

BOSTON (WBZ) ― A fire burned part of the landmark Citgo sign in Kenmore Square Wednesday.

It started just before noon and was put out a few minutes later. A small area of black soot could be seen on one side of the sign.

The fire department told WBZ a police officer and a worker spotted the flames around 11:45 a.m.

Department spokesman Steve MacDonald said it was likely caused by an electrical short circuit and estimated the damage at about $5,000.

The Citgo sign has been part of the Boston skyline for decades.

An early version was built in 1940. The current version has sat atop Kenmore Square since 1965.

It's said to be the largest sign in New England.

It was once illuminated with five miles of neon tubes, until a 2005 renovation, when the neon was replaced by LED's.

I wonder what brand was in there??? 40 years working fine  and then only 3 years.

Would that still be under warrantee?

GOOD things happen for a reason......

If it was working fine for 40 years, they probably wouldn't have changed it. Citgo has an animated screen saver of the old sign that you can download here: http://www.citgo.com/AboutCITGO/BostonSign.jsp Even in this video, there are several sections of neon that don't work.

According to that link, "CITGO decided to dismantle the deteriorating sign in 1983, but the people of Boston came to its rescue. Claiming the sign was an excellent example of urban neon art, and as Boston as baked beans, they stopped the demolition crew. Groups fought to have the sign declared a landmark.". It sounds like it was refurbished in 83... so that's 22 years until they decided to change over. I'm guessing they wanted a combination of greening their image (ie: "energy savings for a petroleum company") as well as reduced maintenance, which made the cost comparison more reasonable.

I gotta say, though - it's hard to tell from those pics. It sure looks like neon to me - I'd like to know whose product was used.

    • It depends on what's under the EIFS.   If it's plywood under the foam, then toggles are fine for a lightweight sign.  If masonry, we've come to like the titen HD (simpson strong tie brand) anchors or long wedge anchors.   The Titen HD screws are more user friendly than tapcons IMO.   They come in a variety of sizes, sometimes even at the big home centers.   Just check to see if it's densglass (fiberglass wall panels) under the foam.  Engineeners have told us that densglass isn't "structural" and that things need to be thru-bolted with uni-strut (or equal) sleepers across studs inside the wall.  A few years back, we were called out for an emergency call where someone had installed some large raceway channel letter signs to an EIFS wall that had densglass behind.  They used lag screws.  These held for a while but a heavy snow caused them to fail.   And toggles should work with Densglass but again not for any heavy loads.    In any case don't compress the foam too much.  A sleeve (mentioned above) would be needed for whatever the depth of the foam might be, though probably not needed for something light like an ACM panel.   if it's a really small sign, then appropriate exterior screws are usually OK going into plywood.

    • Hi   Can anyone tell me the right color red and blue translucent vinyl for the "new" Pepsi logo?  We have a local ice cream spot that recently changed from Coke to Pepsi and we have to replace the graphics on a couple of lit cabinets.   The customer sent me the logo in various formats but it didn't specify the correct colors.   I've searched but keep getting CYMK, etc. for the older logo - 2022 or so.   Thanks!
