I'm probably not going to book for a few weeks to a month from now. You flying in, or driving Brian?

I was thinking Hard Rock, seems to be the party place. Our plan is to drive to the state line, stay in on of those hotels Thursday night and get to our Vegas hotel in the morning, staying for the weekend and leaving Sunday.

Have you check the Hard rocks rates? Probably 350.00 to 450.00 on Friday night.

Once again - I would recommend The Platinum Hotel - 2 blocks from the strip - closer than Hard Rock, centrally located, rooms (with full kitchen, living room, laundry, etc etc) for about $150 http://www.theplatinumhotel.com/

You may also want to look the rates for the M HOTEL - it is opening in March, it is on the south side of town - first hotel you will hit when you come into Las Vegas. It is brand new and is being built by the Marnell's - the company that designed the Bellagio...should have good rates http://www.themresort.com/ $180-$220

Another cool site to visit or have emails sent to you is http://travelzoo.com they get some unbelievable deals from time to time. I even bought their stock a few years back at 7-$8 a share and sold it in less than a year for $100. See I went on a tangent, anyway they always send me emails on deals, vegas is usually a big part.

$350? Good Lord. I'm cheap skate, my shoes squeek when I walk, beside I'd rather pay for fun stuff rather than a room I'll spend 4 hours in a day.

there are a lot of hotels on the strip that have rates under $75 these days - book early - the rates will not be any lower than they are now.

I've stayed at the Tropicana before... wasn't too please but it was a price based decision. You're right that it's somewhat convenient to the show (you cross a bridge to get to the Excalibur where you stayed last year). Try to get into the front tower (close to the bridge) instead of the back tower, as it's a loooong walk back and you'll have your pick of the dozen or so black hookers who hang out late at night.

I really like the look of Platinum, Manuel. The distance to show at the Mandalay is a bit of pain, but I'll likely be bringing a Vegas first timer and being closer to the middle of the strip might be preferable anyways, and in a 2 room setup (or with pull out in LR) helps save a little $.

Tropicana back tower has had problems with water system in the recent past and was shut down - some bacteria was found in the water system...oops.

If you just want inexpensive and close to Mandalay there are several $50/night places just down the street.

The Platinum is "high end" at a budget price - it really is a nice hotel. I think that Palms Place (not the Palms hotel) also has good room rates and this is "ultra high end" and is short walk to main Palms hotel - this is party place.

I would also check out Bellagio rates - I know a lot of people have stayed there recently because of low low rates.

The Planet Hollywood is also very popular destination these days due to low rates.

Hooters is right next to Tropicana and while it is a bit lower end is still very close to everything.

And for those ok with driving or that are driving into Las Vegas - would consider any of the neighborhood casinos - Red Rock, Green Valley, Silverton, Aliente (new on North side of town).

But I still say that Platinum is the best for location/proximity to everything, huge rooms (full kitchen, laundry, etc) - this was going to be a Condo tower....best value over all - and very high end for the price.

If you want to be stupidly decadent I would recommend one of the suites at Palms Place...these are just ridiculous....

And for entertainment - just ask - this is something we help a lot with...and most of the venues associated with our lovely town these days are very very low end now...actually pretty bad....it is almost more entertaining to go to the Hard Rock and watch the crowd there...we call it "Wildlife Watching"

Some of the prices cited here are certainly cheaper, but--if distance is a larger concern--the official Expo hotels have also lowered their rates. (As the overall Vegas rates have dropped, most of the convention planners and travel vendors have also lowered their group discount rates to match.)

On Signexpo.org, the Excalibur is showing at $99 (Wed,Th) and $159 (Fr,Sa) -- which is a few $$$ lower that the prices listed on hotels.com and orbitz. The Luxor is showing at $129 (Wed,Th) and $199 (Fr,Sa). And the Mandalay and THEhotel are priced at a level above the tolerances of anyone searching for cheap rooms.

Again, I realize that many other Vegas hotels have lower prices, but factoring in the time lost in walking or cabs (and cost for cabs, depending on distance) the Excalibur or Luxor may make sense for some.

Hey! This is Lori, Chubby Gumby's better-half. How is the "Wild West" or "Wild Bill's" Hotel on Tropicana Ave.? It seems to have great rates. Please advise! Manuel, Brian said that you might know. Thanks!
