World's First Solar-powered EL Signs unveiled

Solar powered, Electro Luminescent (EL) signage is now a reality thanks to UK product design company Anokimobi Ltd. The ground-breaking signs are the first of their kind to be powered solely by the sun rays.

Brighton, Sussex (PRWEB) May 15, 2009 -- Solar powered, Electro Luminescent (EL) signage is now a reality thanks to UK product design company Anokimobi Ltd. The ground-breaking signs are the first of their kind to be powered solely by the sun rays.

Environmentally friendly and low maintenance, solar powered signs could potentially save businesses millions in electricity costs and would additionally help them to reach previously untapped audiences where electricity supply is limited or non-existent.

Based on Electro Luminescence (EL) technology, one of the most energy efficient and versatile light sources to exist, a typical outdoor sign can provide between 6 and 14 hours of continuous illumination from daytime charging depending on the model. Unlike signs that use solar power to light very simple shapes made from light-emitting diodes (LEDs), EL signs can broadcast complex design sequences and detailed messages. EL signs can also be fixed almost anywhere due to their lightweight properties and streamlined construction.

Ideally suited for use in sunny climates, it is expected that companies with interests in Southern Europe, South America, Africa, India and the Middle East will be the first to adopt the innovative and eco-friendly signs.

Potential applications for a solar powered unit are not all purely commercial and have wide ranging possibilities for the emergency services and hospitals.

Adding a solar powered element is the latest of a number of innovations by Anokimobi; in 2008 the company developed a considerably more streamlined unit which allowed virtually any hard or soft surface such as plastic, metal, wood and fabric to accommodate an advertising message without the need to first modify its surface.

Now, with the addition of the solar powered element, an EL sign can broadcast energy-efficiently and almost anywhere for a typical lifespan of over 4,000 hours with very little maintenance. The unit also has been developed so the broadcast design panel is interchangeable; a new panel can be simply slotted into place allowing different messages to animate without having to install a whole new unit. Should the sun not shine for a few days the signs have been developed to work from mains supply if needed.

Hmmm - sounds like this product running 12 hours a day will last about 1 year....I hope the sign company got the maintenance contract!!!

Saw a proposal to use EL signage on the area of the countertop where you pick up your coffee at Starbucks - now that was clever - could change signage every few months. More practical application.

Yeah - EL is a very limited life product. OK for 6 months on the side of a bus, but I wouldn't want it in any long term installations. We've actually been replacing EL in several architectural projects where it simply wasn't bright enough to begin with, never mind after the first year was done.

Give them credit for making it light up completely off the grid, but LEDs make a whole lot more sense.

4,000 hours / 12 hours a night = 333 days or under a year of life. This is not a proper application for EL

    • It depends on what's under the EIFS.   If it's plywood under the foam, then toggles are fine for a lightweight sign.  If masonry, we've come to like the titen HD (simpson strong tie brand) anchors or long wedge anchors.   The Titen HD screws are more user friendly than tapcons IMO.   They come in a variety of sizes, sometimes even at the big home centers.   Just check to see if it's densglass (fiberglass wall panels) under the foam.  Engineeners have told us that densglass isn't "structural" and that things need to be thru-bolted with uni-strut (or equal) sleepers across studs inside the wall.  A few years back, we were called out for an emergency call where someone had installed some large raceway channel letter signs to an EIFS wall that had densglass behind.  They used lag screws.  These held for a while but a heavy snow caused them to fail.   And toggles should work with Densglass but again not for any heavy loads.    In any case don't compress the foam too much.  A sleeve (mentioned above) would be needed for whatever the depth of the foam might be, though probably not needed for something light like an ACM panel.   if it's a really small sign, then appropriate exterior screws are usually OK going into plywood.

    • Hi   Can anyone tell me the right color red and blue translucent vinyl for the "new" Pepsi logo?  We have a local ice cream spot that recently changed from Coke to Pepsi and we have to replace the graphics on a couple of lit cabinets.   The customer sent me the logo in various formats but it didn't specify the correct colors.   I've searched but keep getting CYMK, etc. for the older logo - 2022 or so.   Thanks!
