Gas mileage

Recommended Posts

Beginning of the year, looking at costs and what not. We started looking at our vehicles. Maintenance costs going up with older trucks or a payment on newer trucks. we had a little bit of an eye opener, we have a 97 f450 bucket and quick calculations were getting 5mpg. we never thought it would be that low, but this is the only gas truck we run. Our other 3 trucks are diesel. Were still waiting to get a couple more tanks through all of em before we get some final numbers.

Has anyone figured there mileage on the vehicles? What are some of your numbers? Are the newer trucks any better?

Figuring mileage is tricky. Most trucks have a different load on them everyday. Different drivers with varying driving habits. Hwy vs stop and go traffic. Then there is the "idle" time when the truck is working. Or when the tech decides to leave it running for 3 hours with the A/C on high. While they're doing an inside wire job.

I do know the new diesels require an additive to clean the exhaust. Not sure what that runs, probably doesn't break the bank. But is an additional cost.

If you're pulling between 5-8 mpg after it's all said and done. That's not too bad in my opinion for a CDL truck with a service crane or bucket attached to it. I look at the job cost: Labor, parts, mark up, fuel, and travel time vs the invoice price.

We just have a 99 F-350 with a V10, 5 speed and 220,000 miles. On the open highway at 75-80 mph we get around 11mpg. Got 12 when I baby it..... but I like drivin it like I stole it! I will always look at Fords when it comes to work. I know this will open up a litany of naysayers, but I like the guns Henry builds!

    • Does anyone know of someone who can hand letter on a brick wall in Phila?    The job was supposed to be lit channel letters, but they now wants to go old-school (very old school) on this location.  it's about 15' to the top of the lettering and a scissor lift can be provided.      Thanks folks!   Rocco

    • It depends on what's under the EIFS.   If it's plywood under the foam, then toggles are fine for a lightweight sign.  If masonry, we've come to like the titen HD (simpson strong tie brand) anchors or long wedge anchors.   The Titen HD screws are more user friendly than tapcons IMO.   They come in a variety of sizes, sometimes even at the big home centers.   Just check to see if it's densglass (fiberglass wall panels) under the foam.  Engineeners have told us that densglass isn't "structural" and that things need to be thru-bolted with uni-strut (or equal) sleepers across studs inside the wall.  A few years back, we were called out for an emergency call where someone had installed some large raceway channel letter signs to an EIFS wall that had densglass behind.  They used lag screws.  These held for a while but a heavy snow caused them to fail.   And toggles should work with Densglass but again not for any heavy loads.    In any case don't compress the foam too much.  A sleeve (mentioned above) would be needed for whatever the depth of the foam might be, though probably not needed for something light like an ACM panel.   if it's a really small sign, then appropriate exterior screws are usually OK going into plywood.
